Luke Jackson?
Not entirely sure where this using early picks on rucks is stupid idea has come from, sure you can find them in other parts of the draft or in the rookie draft. But same as every other position, you're far more likely to hit on a good player early. While ye i agree that you prob won't want to usually use a top 10 pick on a ruck unless they're really special like Jackson, the 1st ruck drafted has rarely been a bust and has usually been pretty damn good value if you're drafting them with a pick around 15-30.

Just wanted to look at this out of curiosity but here's the first ruck drafted every draft the past decade, only one has been what you would currently label a bust in Coleman-Jones.

2022 - Harry Barnett - pick 23: TBA
2021 - Toby Conway - pick 24: TBA but word is he looks the goods
2020 - Riley Thilthorpe - pick 2: looks good though not sure if he's a KPF or a ruck (Shannon Neale at pick 33 is the next ruck if you want to call Thilthorpe a forward, too early to call on Neale yet who's had an injury-interrupted career so far though its def possible he's the 2nd bust on this list)
2019 - Luke Jackson - pick 3: Enough said
2018 - Kieran Briggs - pick 34: Took a few years but he's a beast
2017 - Callum Coleman Jones: pick 20: Bust (Tom De Koning taking shortly after at 30 was a hit though)
2016 - Tim English - pick 19: AA this yr albeit we all know he isnt as good as Max and had Grundy not been there he'd have been back up ruck, regardless def a decent pick
2015 - Matt Flynn - pick 41: No early rucks here but Flynn has still had a relatively ok career
2014 - Marc Pittonet - pick 50: Not a good draft for rucks.

Looking at the above data and taking into account Melbourne's lack of anything resembling a young successor to Max, given Max's age and how long ruckmen usually take and of course depending upon what the recruiting team thinks of the rucks this year. It could be wise if we can find a good young ruck with one of our picks in the 20s or 30s with Will Green or Mitchell Edwards both being potentially good picks in that range. Of course, one other factor to take into account when looking at that list is that 4 of the players on there have been traded though i would say they are the 4 worst rucks on the list so there's that.

Three young ruck prospects are named in the top 20-30 range of this draft by ESPN: Mitch Edwards (207cm/WA), Will Green (204cm/Vic) and Archer Reid (203cm/Vic).

Pick 25 might snare us one of these boys if we keep that pick and decide to have a crack at unearthing the next Maxy Gawn. Any keen U/18 and draft watchers got any hot takes on these three lads?

Considering our list, and lack of mids in this draft and number of talls in this draft (and age of Gawn) makes me think this wouldn’t be a terrible year to take a decent ruck prospect to develop.

Hopefully we can get at least 1 or 2 miss in this draft but we can hone in on mids next year which is supposed to be deeper on quality midfielders.

Mitch Edwards is the one with lots of upside but Green is a bit more of a sure thing.

Reid seems to be touted as more of a forward than a ruck but I havnt seen enough good forward craft from him to make me interested.

Edwards or Green I’d be happy with.

Thanks D16. I would not be surprised if we took a punt on one of those lads.

Is Kalani White eligible next year? Or the year after? Is it worth taking a punt on a ruck this year if Kalani is available next year? That’s of course if he end up being a ruck.

There's just no need to spend one on one. Almost any young ruck you take will take 4 years to develop and the majority of them will be available for the same pick about 4 years later. You don't need a good ruck, Cox and Cameron are premiership rucks, Stanley, Maric etc.

Who the * is Tom Fullarton?
This should explain his role in the side.

It's real kick in the pants when we've struggled to draft KPP talent for a decade and the dogs get JUH, Darcy and Croft handed to them while still playing finals most years
Darcy and Croft, I can understand, because their F/S. But the JUH thing was just a f**king joke. It's always the same with the AFL, bending over at the first bluster and making s**t up as they go along.

With Croft coming their way it's basically allowed them to beat everyone else for pick 4 now too.

Dont bother getting involved in that s**t fight, would probably be better and easier to just trade up to 3 the way its looking.
Wonder if we could try and move 5 + 13 for 3 and see if we can trade our second rounders for pick 10.

Yeah, honestly I think this is a move the Hawks should make, not sure going all in on Reid with their current side is a good move, they still have some holes to fill. Id be looking for multiple picks in the first round for pick 3 instead if I was them

It’s a massive advantage to clubs when it comes to building a list. Particularly we got screwed thinking we had access to Mac Andrew. Quiet likely could have altered our plans in the drafts prior thinking we had an elite tall talent coming through. Dogs and Pies have had a nice little run at it. Dogs with the access to key talls is a huge bonus for them. Can see why Jason Taylor was so annoyed at losing access to Mac Andrew.

That turned out to be a massive blessing in disguise. Would have ****ed our draft hand completely.

Especially when the outrage around JUH made them change the rule, meaning we lost out on pick 5 Andrew, and now they may change it back because Quaynor Jr looks a good prospect for Collingwood.

IMO we desperately need a spread of young talent.

Would rather than a number of mid firsts and early seconds if Reid is off the table.

Of the under 22s on our list, based off AFL exposure and VFL form, it isn't great reading.

Great prospects: Rivers, JVR, Bowey, McVee, Pickett
Likely prospects: Woey Jr, Howes, D.Turner
Work to do: Laurie, K.Turner, AMW
Unproven: Jefferson, Adams, Verrall, Farris-White, Sestan

We just got Fullerton, what more do you want? Very fussy.
