Off topic, but between the monogram being added to the front and the big yellow Hertz logo on the back, next year's guernsey looks like a bit of a mess if I'm being honest.

I hope they don't add the word 'pick' sideways either, looks disgusting.

I also can't wait for someone to ask Windsor why is he not Curtin

dude, you preferred Liam Henry and Brodie Kemp over Weightman and Hayden Young. Epic fail. It's well and good to think you're the next Cal Twomey but maybe go and watch some games first.

The fact that you think that you can make such strong assumptions on players based on mock drafts and youtube clips is embarassing in itself. If you could do this then why does our recruiting team even bother to go to any games? 😀

Captain hindsight in the house everyone.

Nice digging up my history and having a strange obsession with me but I have already responded to this post re Henry and Kemp in another thread, look up my history again if you can’t find it as you enjoy doing so.

As I have also stated before, unfortunately I am unable to travel the country watching every kid play live and I only have mock drafts and YouTube highlight videos so guess my opinion isn’t as elite as that that of an elite big footy draft poster like yourself.

Well done son, you watched them all live, gold star for you mate. Wasn’t aware only those elite enough to watch every draftee live were allowed to have an opinion but there you have it.

Might as well password protect these theads and give out the password to post at u18 games so only those who attend live matches can post moving forward since others arnt allowed to without being ridiculed.

There's a difference though. You're saying things like you know who is a good pick and who isn't. Whereas for me, if we picked someone at 7 that was estimated as a pick in the 40's I would not care at all as you know that the recruiting team sees something in that player.

You can 100% have an opinion on players but when you say things like they're gospel or that certain picks are busts and that we 'stuffed up the draft' sort of comments without acknowledging that you haven't seen any of the players live and don't acknowledge the work that the full time recruiting team put in then it just comes across as confusing. You haven't even studied the players...You're not privy to the information that the recruiters have.

What if, for example, the dees recruiters went to go and watch Curtin at a school footy game and they saw him skull a friends beer at half time and then give the finger to all the mums in the crowd after he kicked a goal or something. This could certainly bring into question his professionalism and character. But you would just be here melting over 'we didn't take Curtin. Typical Melb' and having no idea why.

We don't know how the club rates players. But the only thing we do know is we know nothing about the players, other than a few YouTube clips. Which in the scheme of how a player is rated is next to nothing.

I am still a little emotional and suffering PTSD from Predagast days, and if Curtin smashed a beer at half-time I would be even more disappointed we didn’t grab him.

Nah, made the under 16s AA team as the CHB. Pretty much a monty to get drafted unless something goes terribly wrong.

Right, I was trying to find this the other day and thought he wasn't in there. Must have missed his name instead.

Good to know, I have hope that we will get a superstar F/S before they shut the rule down.

This is a pretty reasonable post Dan, good work.

Although the bolded part would probably endear him to a few on here, haha.

Also is this the most compromised draft in history? 11 picks added to round 1 with 2nd round starting at pick 30. What an absolute farce.

That, I mostly agree with you on. I get the logic (for the most part) of northern academies (though the bidding/matching system is flawed – you shouldn't be able to cobble together a bunch of late picks for a premium talent), but compensation and priority picks need to go, or be overhauled significantly.

The 20% discount on matching academy players is a joke. They already have a big enough advantage hoarding talent without giving them a discount.

Forgot about that. Even more evidence of a badly flawed system.

Should be cap on how many academy/FS they can take (eg 2 players over a 5 year period).

Would really make them think twice about taking them if there is a chance better talent is coming through the following year(s)

4 players in 1 draft is absolutely cooked.

Having a cap would’ve forced Suns to choose between Read or Lombard next year and released Roger’s and Graham back into the pool. Still an advantage but not as ridiculous as it currently is.

To think these blokes got our pick 2 a few years back as a priority pick makes me sick.

Even one a year would be reasonable enough (if the discount etc was removed). Four players in the first round is ludicrous though.

I agree 4 first round picks is a bit excessive. I wouldn't go as far as 2 in five years but perhaps 2 first rounders per year should be the cap or something like that.

keep trying to play the man and having a weird obsession with me

The whole process sort of cannibalises itself through a recurring cycle though. If all these academy picks happen to turn out well, the club/s in question won't be able to afford to keep them all, meaning they inevitably get traded for more picks later, leading to further drafts that are completely dominated by a select few clubs.

That has happened with GWS who still continue to benefit from original concessions through constant trading of players/picks back in.

Same will happen with North when some of there midfield talent decides to leave due to not getting a run.

Sorta, would mean GC can actually build a team of queenslanders who don't all **** off and might actually sustain success. Means more Victorian kids should be available for the vic clubs too

I watched a vid on this topic the other day and have come down a bit get rid of academies after it explained it much clearer than the AFL does... I get the purpose they serve in Northern states now, growing the game and giving GWS and GC a shot at being competitive. However, I feel Brisbane and Sydney shouldn't have any as they have plenty of access to father and son's just like the rest of the comp. Dont mind it for GC and GWS coz they have a lot less F&S possibilities than the rest of the clubs do. I do agree there should be like a 2 player first round cap per year and no discount whatsoever though.
