Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Harley Reid the standout of course - ended up with 26 odd possessions, kicked a couple but should have had 4. Spent a fair bit of time up forward.

The more I look at the WA talent, the more I honestly think WCE will look to get multiple picks at the top end. Reckon they'd would be bleeding to see Curtin picked up by another club - the kid looks a massive talent - likely top 5-6. Clay Hall probably the best mid tonight, and others like Sanchez and O'Driscoll also prominent. Collard was electric up forward in patches.

Wasn't terribly impressed with Duursma - looks a little one paced - not really the type we need. Wilson also looked okay without being a standout.

The 1st 8-10 in the draft look to have some real quality, more likely we would be trying to gain a extra early pick rather than splitting our pick & dropping down the order.
Maybe our future first for GC first this year. GC will need to trade down for their academy players. We could even split our future first for a couple late firsts/early seconds.

Reid will get the press as usual, but Curtin, I could argue was better, defended brilliantly (had 10 marks 3/4 time, not sure if final figure) went on to the ball at the depth, marking forward and kicking a clutch goal to bring his side within a goal.
Likely gone by our pick, but absolutely my pick at the moment.

I think we are going to need a lot of picks this draft with the amount of players potentially leaving. I’d be trading out our first or second in 2024 for a few late firsts or seconds in 2023. We can then shift up the board for the needs of the club. I’d also love to pick up Lachie Shultz or Tom papley. The layers contract is going to be tough on Sydney with the likes of gulden Warner and sheldrick prices going up.

We could arguably turn Fisher, TDK and McGovern into 2 more first also. Obviously with a bit of crafty moving around The board.

I’d love to finish our off season with McKercher and Papley as priorities.

Curtin and Reid were huge tonight.

WCE has a lot of thinking to do in regards to the pick swap, Clay Hall continues to impress and Edwards remains one of the best rucks to come through in some years.

Key factor in this is the Melbourne trade hypothetical. Apparently very keen on Reid but so long as Sydney remain below Freo on the ladder theres no way they make that trade. Curtin wouldn't make it past Sydney with both McCartins concussion issues and general lack of KPD's.

GWS is in a perfect spot as they don't need a KPD gun like Curtin with Buckley and Taylor already there, they lose nothing by moving up for Reid.

Curtin, Edwards, Hall would be a great haul for WCE if they were sticking to the WA talent

The 2 ways I see the draft playing out (Roughly atleast)

WCE - Reid
GCS - Walter
North - Watson
Hawthorn - Caddy
Carlton - Mckercher
GWS - Duursma
Sydney - Curtin
GWS - Honestly no clue who they'd want as a 2nd pick around this mark.
Melbourne - Sanders
GCS - Rogers

In the case a trade for pick 1 does occur...

GWS - Reid
GCS - Walter
North - Watson
Hawthorn - Caddy
Carlton - Mckercher
WCE - Curtin
Sydney - Duursma/O'Sullivan - Think they'd be open to trading down a few picks and try select O'Sullivan around 10 if clubs wanted to jump up to Duursma
WCE - Edwards
Melbourne - Sanders
GCS - Rogers

I want Mckercher. I've weighed up in my head a dozen times about Mckercher vs Duursma but tonight confirmed it for me. I'll take the day in day out gun over the speculative X-Factor that goes missing for three quarters of games. Mckercher and Walsh would be all the pace our Midfield needs and would form a fantastic duo running all over the place.

Reckon the top 4 is just about set in stone though unless North get an extra 1st from Mckay leaving and go Curtin

Absolutely, could mount a case that he is as good as any mid in the draft.

I just am not prioritising mids this year
Agree always take best available Curtin & Caddy look excellent prospects.
lt is very much a variable where we finish, with games against the three top teams & interstate games also.

We absolutely need a mid sized goalkicking forward & some more players with speed & good ball users.

We have the best spine in the game, and one of the worst midfields. Why aren’t you prioritising mids?

You will mount a case and like it

Actually was just highlighting how quickly rankings change, as these kids develop differently over time and by the end of the year, will change again

You look for attributes, not what they are now, but what they can become

Just a hypothetical.

If TDK accepts the substantial offer from the Swans, I'd be hoping that Austin would be feverishly working the phones, although he's likely doing that anyway.

We negotiate to trade TDK to the Swans for their two 2nd round picks - possibly with some shuffling of later/future picks. At the same time we trade these onto GCS for their 1st round pick, potentially giving us picks 4 and 9 going by the current draft order.

If nothing else, it puts us in Harley Reid territory.

We have the best spine in the game, and one of the worst midfields. Why aren’t you prioritising mids?
I am not prioritising “mids” as we actually have one of the better midfields in the competition despite popular opinion around here. Our connection is largely hit or Miss, and the deployment of our mids can be questionable.

Cripps is the Brownlow medallist 15 weeks removed. Voss has made subtle changes to his role through the year which has altered the dynamic. He remains arguably the most tagged player in the game. He has had some down games where he has either been unfocused or carrying something at times through the season.

Walsh is in the top echelon of young mids. He has had a challenging year with basically no pre season and likely still managing his issues. His deployment is again a work in progress, and he needs to embrace team ethos a little more. Like Crippa can revert to good complex mode where he tries to do too much and doesn’t engage with his team mates sufficiently. Comes down to coaching more than anything.

Cerra - if we were winning games, he would be getting reviews akin to Butters. Has been magnificent this season and is still developing. Made of the right SRP turf physically and mentally. Suffered more than most with some questionable deployment of playing resources. Relegated to HBF to make way for lesser performing mates too often. The best connector in the team currently.

Kennedy is the perfect foil for Crippa. A warrior, with more tricks than many identify. Has been made a bit of a blunt instrument by our coaching group rather than utilising his playmaking abilities and his forward craft when we are lacking in that area currently.

Hewett has thrived in the Voss model. The crash and bash juggernaut suits his style and “overperformed” in 2022. Carrying a chronic back ailment, so it would seem the role is unsustainable going forward. When recruited, I expected he would transition to a defensive role as the midfield evolved, but that area is over invested at the moment.

Cuningham gave us a taste of his assets last round and body willing will build in to a potent mid/forward hybrid and add dramatically to our connection.

Hollands has been deployed on the wing exclusively, with his running power utilised to paper over some cracks regarding structure and two way running. Make no mistake, if given the opportunity, he will develop in to an engine room option who should improve our pace and connectivity.

Acres is the right bloke at the right time to provide a genuine disciplined high volume wing option. He has inside scope, but his value is outside. Thinking he was over utilised in our “ordinary” stretch, making us too predictable. As we upgrade our outside/wing options I would expect him phased out. (Perhaps Binns and the Campo boys provide that without over investing this year)

There are other players who may transition to the midfield at some stage and old Ed who I am nit including in the future.

Other than the universal no. 1 elect in Reid, the touted top end mids this year have questions. McKercher is a spectacular mover, but has very patchy to poor disposal efficiency. Not what we need in my opinion.

Sanders, I do rate, and expect to go higher than many think. He has a very rounded skill set and undersold athletic profile. I would not complain if we called him out, but our midfield rotations are spoken for in the short term. Sanders does have the skills and smarts to contribute in other positions early in his career.

The discussion you responded to was about Clay Hall who is a very good and very complete mid from WA. High volume, skilled and as a POD is a leftie.

Duursma is highly regarded by some, and may in fact, have the ability to elevate to a lofty standard, but remains forward first and I still question his “floor” more than others at the pointy end of the draft.

I will add the rider that I am a big fan of Tholstrup from WA who has midfield credentials, but is likely more a very robust, yet athletic half forward or wing first. If we were to get a second pick, say in the teens from a TDK departure, I would want him as a hybrid.

At the top end, I am looking at Curtin, Caddy and Watson as potential options as very much “modern” types with a bit of X factor and substance to fill needs on our list. There are others, but they have my prime focus to date.

There are so many high quality tall youngsters in te 2023 cohort, Austin must remain highly focused.
Overhaul playing list, create space and get 2023 and next couple of drafts spot on.
Reckon a quality midfielder with good speed, endurance ,footy IQ and accurate user is essential, always to any team. Also as RFA we need an AFL ready Ruck, reasonable mobility and proactive around the ground.
Whilst we the amazing and exceptional tall forwards in Charlie & Harry, we should improve ball distribution.

I appreciate the thoughtful and insightful response.

We can agree to disagree on our midfield though. I still think we lack a graders through there.

Indeed. This time last year, Lemmey was still a top-10 prospect (though starting to fall about this time).
