Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Wilsons final game of the champs. Some beautifully weighted kicks inside 50 and out wide, not amazing inside apart from getting the ball to boot rather quickly. In his state league games he certainly shows a bit more dare in taking on the tackler with his speed.

Still the best runner in the draft and one of the best kicks imo.

Watching Wilson’s highlights he looks very similar to Hollands in his draft year. I feel like he wouldn’t be our man with Hollands and Binns who can play a similar role

Wilson can play half back and half forward to a good level too and definitely has more raw pace than Hollands. I think he'd find a spot off a flank pretty easily in combination with Binns and Hollands.

But a fair enough concern

Poor kid is being sold into a world of hurt. Probably just said he’d like to play in VIC (completely understandable) & they are just running with the “story”.
What’s worse is that if WC was smart they would be shopping around the pick - I’d sell it everyday of the week if I could get a top 5-6 & lower than 12-13. They need as many good kids coming in as possible - wouldn’t be silly if they were the ones shopping the story to drive interest

Note that Watson has drifted to 7 or 8 in prospective draft order from a couple of publications post champs, can we get him to perform average for the rest of the u18’s season?

Think regardless of performance and how good he is, height will see him slide a little, just how it is!

And if North were smart, instead of grovelling to the AFL for more assistance, they should get on the front foot to make a play for Reid.

GCS will be looking to trade out this year's 1st rounder, currently pick 6. Why wouldn't North offer their future 1st as part of a trade to GCS to access pick 6, then package up picks 2 and 6 to WCE for Harley Reid?

Something as simple as:
North >> pick 2, 2024 1st and 2024 3rd
North << pick 1 and 19, GCS 2024 2nd

GCS >> pick 6, 2024 2nd
GCS << NM 2024 1st and 3rd

WCE >> picks 1 and 19
WCE << picks 2 and 6

Makes sense to cook something like that up, I’d want a little more for WC - they need another 1st - need to turn pick 1 into 2 players & keep 19. IMO pick 1 is overrated very rarely is it worth more than say 3-8 & 10-14, someone stupid enough to stump up, u take it and run

We don’t specifically think about a Cripps replacement.

We progressively build our midfield. With Walsh, Cerra and Kennedy in our mix for 5-10 years,it just stays as an organic development. A variety of midfield models can work. Rozee and Butters are the frontliners of Port’s midfield with important contributions from Wines, Boak and a couple of others. Smaller hard nuts like Viney and Liberatore are fronting their teams’ engine rooms while Petracca and Bont are playing hybrid roles.

Contrary to popular opinion, we are not in great need of midfield upgrades. Hollands, Carroll and Binns potentially have a role to play in the midfield, particularly the first two. Brodie Kemp is already on our list and it is not beyond possibility that he is added to the midfield mix at some stage.

It is likely we will add a mid at each draft over the next five or so. That includes inside and outside types. We have the Camporeale boys next year, Lucas developing as advertised as the more silky outside wing type, while less vaunted Ben has focussed on adding an inside element to his game, quite successfully from all reports. A couple of years later Cody Walker comes up, currently projecting as a utility spending most of his time on ball.

With Ed and likely Dow departing at year’s end and Fisher reported to be on the move, we should be adding a midfield option this year. That could be in many forms, an outside chance Ryley Sanders lasts to our first pick on a best available basis, down to possibly adding VFL guns in the ever improving Ramshaw or Dozzi with a late/rookie pick. For mine, we look at adding another pick in the late first or early second range and look at a hybrid forward/mid like WA’s Tholstrup (likened to Zurhaar) or more dynamic small Koen Sanchez, also from WA (who I really like to be a front line Papleyesque player)

The midfield will evolve. Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Kennedy, Hewett, Cuningham, Docherty, Hollands, Carroll and plenty of “pinch hitters” from smalls like Durdin to Silvagni who is under rated as a midfield option give us a solid combination for the medium to long term future. Some extra pace would be nice, with Binns and likely the Camporeale boys already in the mix to add that at least on the outside in the foreseeable future.
Gradually adding mids over time is what I was thinking too. There's no guarantee any one draftee will come on. Spreading it over a number of years fives better coverage.

I doubt they do that because it’s crazy. What years has pick 1 been miles ahead of picks 2-10?

Every year it’s the same story, this kids the best ever, better than all others, half way through the first season and you realise there’s others just as good, let alone two players from the top 10

Still convinced Watson and Wilson would be a very good haul. Obviously would love Mckercher but he's a pipe dream and the other I really like is Lance Collard from WA. Watson, Durds and Collard would be absolutely blistering in terms of speed and footskills. Be a nightmare for any team to defend if they developed their up the ground work to be elite high half forwards when called upon. Collards biggest knock is so called professionalism issues which really I can't pretend to know anything about but he has as much talent as any small fwd in the draft outside of the Wizard.

Ability to create separation in the forward line is something we lack in our smalls atm and you can see how big of a difference Cunners and Martin make by simply finding open space instead of clogging the place up.

Dreams of two picks in the first dozen or so are just that. Dogs are barking that TDK is staying. If we trade our future first back, it will only get us a late first at very best.

“Hitting the draft” may yet just be two picks with some rookie elevations, with maybe a couple of rookie additions. Hopefully get something worthwhile assuming Fisher is leaving. If Dow is “gone” it is to be hoped he can impress a suitor or two in coming weeks to get more than a token pick.

Collard has both professional questions and lack of defensive intent. Sanchez, O’Driscoll and a couple of others are in front of him from WA. Allies’ Gothard and Callinan have more claims on the small forward front.

Better players currently but not on the same level in terms of raw talent. He's a risk I'd be willing to take if he wasn't absolutely terrible in his interviews. Speed and goal sense as good as anyone in the draft but he certainly needs some solid coaching and a mindset shift.

This will change massively when the actual draft happens. Wait until a few more midfielders pop up their heads, they will start to drop the rucks and tall defenders down the order.
Agree totally the usual bollters will surface around a month or so prior to draft, in fact until final it may not be decisive to forecast.
Notwithstanding there are quite a few very talented KP talls and Rucks in this cohort. One thing is certain , HR is gonna be an absolute gun.

WCE would not want to drop too far down the list order, Dan Curtin would be high on their list of options. This kid is a monster midfielder and can move to the back half if required for a few years.
Totally agree....which is one of the reasons WCE probably wouldn't entertain a trade unless it could get access to him. Even the Demon's package currently at picks 4 and 15 wouldn't cut it in a deal, especially with the Hawks likely to snap him up at pick 3.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the AFL provide NM a mid 1st priority pick to package up with pick 2 in order to facilitate a trade to WCE for pick 1....something that could benefit both clubs. NM get Harley Reid essentially for pick 2, and WCE would welcome Dan Curtin and possibly a Tholstrup.

Tholstrup is a little stretch for pick 2 at the moment, unless you're talking about a mid first round/start of second round selection.

I am very high on Sanders, wish we could somehow get our hands on this kid.
Hardeman for a second round pick would be nice, but we may have to move up to early second round to obtain.
Clay Hall another solid midfielder option around the second round.

The question with HR is has he really shown any improvement from last year or is he just a big kid that has dominated through his size?

Sorry, I meant that if they traded with NM which netted them pick 2 as well as a mid 1st rounder, they could select Curtin at pick 2 and potentially Tholstrup with the other pick. North get Harley Reid, which could be a 'win' for both clubs.

I agree though that Sanders would be a handy pick up, although unlikely with our current ladder position. There are some others I also liked during the carnival that could be good pick ups lower down the order, especially a few of the Vic Country boys.

Just a bit of crystal balling though...I reckon we'll be looking to trade our future 1st on some type of deal that gets us a current and future 2nd round picks, or even possibly a player and draft pick. It'll be interesting to see how Austin navigates us back into this draft.

A couple of surprises. Cannot understand how Mitch Edwards misses a spot despite missing the final game. Clearly the best pure ruck in the competition. They surprisingly named Leake off an abbreviated program as well as underager Finn O’Sullivan who did nit play them all. Perhaps Will Green was a token to get Metro’s quota up.

Curtin and X? would be real WC's plans, but they'd never concede that Harley isn't their target(and lose negotiating leverage)
But does North deserve a priority pick and not WC also?(Norths got a better list)

The problem I see with West Coast trading down is that if Curtin is actually worth a top 3 pick then both North and Hawthorn would be all over him. It’s then hard to see why those clubs would actually give up another top pick to go on top to make it worthwhile for West Coast.
If I’m West Coast then I’m offering 19 and a future second to GC for pick ~6 and just backing in themselves to keep Reid. Also be in Curtin’s ear with a huge money offer to come home the second he is drafted interstate
