Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

He we go... Why so, and why doth thou not protest?

Looking at who’s ooc still, who we have signed up, the fact we are already over our list size limit with that extra in Cincotta absolutely guaranteed to be around and the need to elevate from the rookie list (which will form a couple of our mandatory 3 picks) I just can’t see it from all reports looks like a very shallow draft.
Whilst I don’t necessarily agree, our perennially injured are all back and stringing games together, I can see them all staying. Multiple were monties not to be there 3 months ago and no doubt we’re on the delist/trade board of Austin.
We have a first then 4th rounder, so our draft capital is poor and I don’t want to be picking all the way back in the backend of 4th round.
We will probably trade in someone (Elijah Hollands isn’t a bad idea and fills a need), reducing our draft capital again and I don’t expect much for either Fisher or Dow (way prefer to keep Dow than lose).

With the Campo boys coming next year, who are both projecting well, I’d much prefer to have one last crack at a top 10 pick this year by bringing forward that future first and drafting a developing key back.

We are in list consolidation mode now, just can’t see the list spots needed to get multiple draft picks in being available and those draft picks being high enough to replace the quality having to be let go to get them.

How many rookies do we technically need to elevate to the senior list, and what's the maximum list split for senior players?

I count five likely (that's not even including the likes of Philp and Sam Durdin), and as many as eight possible changes. The likelihood that there's not going to be a lot of players taken this year means that the lower rounds are going to be more open. It won't be a case of us being a bottom club passing on lowly 'pick 70' only to have as much chance of getting the same value in the rookie draft.

At the moment Boyd and Mirkov, although there's a chance they change the rules so they can have have another year.

Maximum 38 Senior List (minimum, which saves you $160k in the cap if you have the extra 2 rookies instead is 36).

I haven't been draft watching much this year but I think our biggest need (as highlighted by our selection issues this week) is someone else to play the Jack Martin role. Having had a brief look at his profile I think Moir is a perfect fit from a theoretical standpoint. He's a good height, is good in the air, knows where the goals are and can kick it 50+ off both feet. The thing is that this position and blend of attributes is generally only available at the very top end of the draft (like Martin himself).

Moir was rated as a potential top 5 pick before this year so the talent is obvious. If we are planning on spending the next couple years at the top of the ladder this might be a rare chance to grab someone with this profile so I think its worth taking a punt on him even if his year was way off standard.

We can probably trade down though, there'd be no need to use a pick in the teens on him.
Tholstrup is the guy around our pick that fits that role, strong, tallish forward with some aggression. If he builds a stronger tank, he could move into the midfield.

He’s the hardest one to place for me. I have a huge bias towards powerful half forwards in the first round but I just think that if these guys are any good they usually go in the first 5-8 picks.

There’s not that many Cam Zurhaars coming through. Usually they get picked where Christian Petracca or Bailey Humphrey did. No doubt the year of senior footy will have done his development wonders and I like his size and tackling but I wonder if his erratic kicking and lack of ball winning will prevent him from being any good.

Freijah another of that type. Was talked up after he kicked 7 in one match earlier in the year, but seems to have drifted out of discussions again - not in CT's top 30. Maybe DeMattia? Harley Reid and Duursma could be those types of players as well, but out of discussion for us.

Oskar Smartt is probably another who fits the bill....I watched him playing for Vic Country, and thought he showed a fair bit. Mid/forward with a decent share of mongrel.

He received an invite to the state combine, so there are clubs obviously interested. Could loom as a good late pick.

I really like Ollie Murphy at our pick
Yep I'll second that. Looks to be a v good kick, puts himself in the right spots and backs himself to take them on.
Will be a monster when he fills out. Look forward to seeing his Draft Combine Sprint and 2k stats.

I was also looking at Connor O'Sullivan but I doubt he'll be around at our pick.

My favourites who I think are 'gettable' with the draft picks we have and likely player/pick movement. Won't be able to get all of them but would be happy with any of these names.

An interesting one from Twomey's rankings is this kid. Started the year as a rebounding defender but has moved up forward with spurts in the midfield and has supposedly had some huge moments in games since the shift. Reminds me a bit of Doc in the way he runs but also a bit of Toby Greene when he plays up fwd. Would have to watch more actual games of his to get a better read.

A family member who works as a recruiter over in WA for a big VIC club is coming over for the rest of the finals to watch the games, so I'm keen to pick his brain on players like Tholstrup, Hall, Collard, Sanchez and Edwards in case he has any intel on WA players on the market end of year.

A lot of the WA kids this year aside from Curtin seem very polarizing players who are wildly inconsistent.

Fair description. Plenty of seemingly talented boys in the west, but their team performance was woeful.
Add Hardeman, O’Driscoll, Zakostelsky and Livingstone to your queries please. (Bo Allan for next year)
