Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

I smell Ollie Murphy
If he lasts that long, maybe. Third best KPD prospect in the draft on face value. Likely to take a number of years to get up to speed. Is solid, but nor spectacular, good positioning, safe, but no outstanding qualities. Another, I would not be upset if we called his name on the night.

I doubt he gets to us, too many clubs need key defenders. I am looking more to Zakostelsky with his superior athletic traits a little later in the draft. A bit less certain, but perhaps greater upside along with more flexibility. Late to the game, yeah, basketball background, less exposure, skills raw, but understandably so. Amazing athleticism, closing speed etc. December birthday with monumental upside. The opposite of Weiters, so should complement him beautifully in a couple of years.

One article flagged splitting our first pick, maybe we can move back a few spots, get ZZ and a runner.

I really hope we can turn the Fisher and Dow picks into something because our debth is going to take a fair hit this off season
Lose

Ed retired, Plow retired, played 1 game.

Honey, LOB, Philp 2 ressies games.

Dow and Fisher certainly.

Add

Williams back from ACL

Binns yet to debut, Irish lads Monahan and Duffy, Cowan developing, O’Keeffe and Lemmey further development, maybe Akuei and Mirkov.

The LTI gang back on the park

A couple of draftees and possible/probable trade for E.Hollands

Not bad for mine

We’ve still got a decent amount of players to call on = 30 + 1 (31) if S.Durd’s continues as regular senior options
Plus Carroll, Cowan & Binns (3)
Mirkov hopefully ready for AFL (1)
Then potentially E.Hollands (1)

Up to the growth of the youngsters on the list along with the Irish pair to push their case for games for the depth.

I'd be taking a punt. Premiership teams often have a few of these high risk high reward players. Don't believe the club has been set up well enough off field to handle them before now but with our pressing need of a talented small forward I think he'd be worth the gamble.

We took the punt last year with Lemmey and it doesn’t seem to have had any negative effects this season, I’m still unsure whether I’d be happy taking the risk in the first round though.

Leakes recent games up forward give me huge Toby Greene vibes

Collard would be a great get. If we can get him settled in vic and settled off the field.

Our WA retention track record is pretty good though.
Far too many red flags. Wouldn’t touch Collard with a barge pole.

The other concern is the standard of WAFL Colts. It is the lesser of the state leagues and the easiest for a naturally gifted player to stand out in. Collard’s one performance for the state side was supremely underwhelming.

There are a number of WA boys I would consider, despite the poor performance of the state side, Collard is not one. (I do concede if he could be “harnessed” could be a weapon, however very much doubt would work with a club east of the Nullarbor.)

E.g.
Curtin (star)
Tholstrup (bankable, not sure of ceiling or ultimate role)
Hardeman (quality modern HBF)
Edwards (has always projected as best ruck in draft, hype has waned of late. Gave our O’Keeffe a touch up during year)
Sanchez (despite being a bit undersized, is more x-factor forward/mid than small forward, feel could be a great one)
O’Driscoll (the classic manic dynamo wing/forward. Screams quality pressure forward at lest level with natural goal sense)
Zakostelsky (the massive riser, good champs in defence, starred in colts finals in ruck 196cm 2.85 20m and “hops”)
Maybe Hall (Hugh volume, tough as nails, but his “patterns” are very predictable)
Maybe Livingstone (more forward than ruck for mine, plenty of upside if developed as a forward/pinch hitter)

There could be a couple of “Smokey’s” not seen at champs or I may have missed off the top of my head.

Sell me on Murphy. Just don’t get the hype. Then again I did say Walsh was Vanilla. Is there a good highlights package on Murphy to sway me??

Going back to my Stingrays affinity - I think Cooper Simpson is a dark horse mid. Injured during season but finished well. Got a bit of Petracca about him - you know that bollocking mid who can launch the footy.

We didn’t rate Elijah Hewett because of lesser traits, we seem enamoured with this kid though. Give me Sanchez before. Like that kid a lot.

Someone sell me on Tholstrup.

Seems to be an OK high forward option, but not especially quick, nor an especially good kick. Wins a fair bit of his ball up the ground and bombs it long to contests.

Tackles with intent, which is good. Hands seem OK. Has a good little shimmy but doesn't seem to have great acceleration.

I'm just seeing a Beau McCreery type, which is fine, but not what I'd like to be getting with a first rounder.

Beau McCreery has elite speed

I was unaware that we were enamoured with Collard.
I think he’s a huge talent and if we can find a pick to get him just before 40 as he’s NGA, I think it would be a steal.
Top 10 on talent.

I was massive on Hewett, his red flags were certainly a bit different to Lance’s. Still think he’s a jet though.

Don't know whether it's the jumper number or what, watching that all I could think of was Bret Thorton.
Watched it three times having a lot of trouble absorbing this video because of the T-Bird.👍

Thornton moved and defended pretty well at 192cms. Murphy is the 200cm key defender defender we hoped Young would be.

Definitely an area of need. Gov will be gone by the time Murphy is ready anyway.
