Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Yeah im of the view now, that we may look to trade a future pick for another 2nd this year.

Similar to what we did with Cowan.

That would give us 3 good quality draftees.

That's supposing we have 3 picks, which I know is up for debate currently.

If the report that we're picking up Fantasia is accurate, then we certainly do not have an extra list spot for a third draftee.

We have 4 senior spots, but one too many rookies.

Pick 22.
Pick 28.
Fantasia.
Upgrade one from rookie to senior list.

That's us done.

Live trading on draft night would either be moving up the board for access to a player who slides (ie. swap 22 and future first for 15 and a future second, draft with 15 and 28) or move down the board because the players we like are gone and we can improve our points position for next year while still taking some speculative picks late this year (ie. swap 28 for 40 + a future third).

One of my very favorite young players in the comp is Mich Owens from the Aints. A superb all round player who can win contests in all manner of ways and help his team win in a big way. I really like Quaynor and Idun for example too for their consistent contest winning. But the latter 2 are backline only players atm.

But that player like young Owens who can win contests all over the ground, great in the air, very good at ground level, strong over the ball, and just the player who can "get it done" all the time. They are gold. Hird was a genius like that, and Owens gives me Hird like vibes.

So what got me thinking of these players and this "type"?

James Leake.

Gives me Owens type feels. Not overly smooth or pretty, but many ways to rip your heart out. A genuine all ground player, strong hands and good read, str8 kick at goal and decisive with ball when upfield, strong tackler, strong over the ball.....and gets it done.

Austin mentioned he had a Top 10 or 12, so could there be 4 possible candidates we might try our darndest to trade up for?...Sanders, O'Sullivan, Caddy, Leake.

Haven't suggestions of "poor" disposal, just that it's improved this year and has scope to improve further.

That being said, I haven't seen him play, so maybe there's a bit of conservative recruiter-speak about it, and the between the lines feedback is that he can't kick?

I reckon you're unlikely to get easy access to a player with both elite speed and elite disposal. If you can find one with both, then good luck if you think they'll also be an elite defender. If Lual can get his disposal into the "neat" range, then that combined with his pace makes him a weapon.

Lual breaking lines and having hard running options like Walsh, Acres, Hollands (x2), Cottrell, Binns, Charlie and Harry presenting as options ahead of the ball...he doesn't need to be able to thread the needle, just put it out in front.
Lual is a pure lockdown defender. His rebounding is pretty mediocre with ball in hand so often just hands it off to someone else or looks for the side to side kick to someone in a better position

Leake looked amazing up forward and going through the midfield. Reads the play well in any position and while needing to tidy up his skills and decision making at time I'd absolutely take the punt on him if we had a top 10-15 pick.

Hun 1st Round Phantom (archive not working properly for me)

Has us taking Luamon Lual.
They have zero clue

It's still unclear if we have 3 picks or not. Guess we will find out soon

Random and unnecessary reference to Albert Proud.

Will disappoint me greatly if we miss on Collard because we downgraded unnecessarily our 1st round pick

That depends on if we intended to take him

Certainly is a 1st round talent, but would be surprised if any non WA side takes him

Disagree, he's a solid shutdown defender but his strength is in taking the game on.

He seems pretty versatile in either role....would be a handy asset though in a run and gun set up.

“An aggressive rebounding defender, Luamon Lual is a player who looks to keep the game moving forward at all costs, running it as far as he can and following up with typically clean ball use”

I'm sure that Austin and co don't change their mind like I do every few days :p

I actually think we have a few good players to choose from at #22 and #28

I think priority goes to these players with our first pick:
Tholstrup, CEdwards and maybe Collard
Hopefully we can get one of them with our first pick.

And then, with our 2nd pick:
Laul - I'm liking him a bit more now
ZZ Schoenmaker Moir

I want Charlie Edwards
Good call - I think you were one of the early one on CEwards, now a lot of posters (including me) are joining in.

However, we've recently got EH & Orazio - so, we've got our forward (with some mid maybe) sorted
I'm happy for Austin and co to go best available - wish list (Tholstrup & CEdwards).

BTW - I know we have quite a few already, but would we entertain another ruckman?
There'll be quite a few available at our selections, particularly #28.

I'm neither hot nor cold on C.Edwards, but at this stage i see him being available at our 1st pick, and maybe our second.
Hopefully still available at our 1st, he would be a great pickup for us not only on my liking of his abilities as the type of midfielder he is but also due our lack of depth with our next wave coming through…
NTH GWS COLL ADEL all chances imo, Can’t see him lasting til our 2nd pick, see how things go 👍

There should only be two picks in between our 2 picks 22 and 28. GC's 24,26 and 27 get swallowed up. Leaving only WC and Geelong between our picks.

We'll have the last pick on Night1, and then should have the 3rd Pick on Night 2.

I'm wondering if Adelaide need any picks and would swap Pick 10 for 22 & 28?
They only have to wait 4 more picks before they have their next pick (after 10) and then they would have 14, 20, 22, 28 & 89

Not likely, as the Crows are wanting to move forward in the draft to get pick 7 or 8 I would say and would be trying to land Sanders or O`Sullivan there, so I doubt that they will be giving up pick 10 in a hurry......going by what the scribes have been saying.

Yeah 100% TW, stupidity forgot to factor that in, not sure how i missed that ?
Definitely gives us a greater chance after our first pick still wouldn’t surprise me if he was drafted before our second pick also by those two imo…
Best available at our pick this year is a funny one, i think our midfield list needs strengthening along with our forwards, doesn’t seem like we will add the developing KPD our list desperately needs this year anyway, unless there’s a left field surprise…
