What's peoples thoughts on Cooper Simpson?
What's his draft range?

Reminds me a bit of Aussie Jones ex-Saints. Decent wheels, not the worst option.

The point I was making is that if we draft a small forward this year, and takes him a couple of year to develop before being ready for AFL, Owies will be 29yo entering into that season - ie 2026. Fantasia will be 30yo.

Pretty much. We took Lemmey despite questions on his competitiveness. Though that was late in the draft and by that stage I think we were just looking for the best key forward left to fill a need.

Moir seems to have unreal skills and is great overhead for his size. Can kick bags of goal as that medium forward. We could do with another type like that. The knock is that he's one dimensional (mark,kick,goal), doesn't get much of the ball, doesn't do much at ground level. He also seems to play best when he is the main marking target inside 50 but that's not going to happen at his size at AFL level so needs to add more strings to his bow / find other ways to stay involved in the game. His character is apparently good and he did battle through a hip injury this year which wouldn't have helped.

I don't think any draftee (bar maybe the top few) come in w/ no deficiencies.

A lower placed or middling team will/can have a higher tolerance for new players coming in than a side that's competing at the top end.

Danger didn't exactly come into the AFL with the build he has now. He didn't even play midfield for any significant time until year 4 or 5. It's been lost in the annals of AFL history but the Crows had a very lengthy and purposeful development period for Dangerfield, he wasn't a bonafide mid until year 5 in the league after playing forward for the vast majority of his first 4 yrs.

Danger also didn’t get to Adelaide until the second year after he was drafted from memory

I now only watch the champs which he was obviously injured in but he does look like a nice type in his highlights. Probably the type all clubs are looking for.
Darcy Wilson on radio the other day also said he was the most underrated player in the draft so it will be interesting to see where he goes.

For us in 2024 someone like Owies, who doesn't have a high ceiling but gives pretty good consistency, might not be dislodged by a new draftee who has one or two elite traits but is lacking in other areas.

Whereas when Dow was drafted we were down the bottom and we could play him in the middle even though he wasn't ready, as an example. Where the difference 2 and 4 wins for the season isn't much when compared to the theoretical development of a draftee.

For us in 2024, the same two win difference might take us from 14 wins 12 that might mean missing finals altogether or missing top 4. It has more weight when balanced against the development of a single draftee.

McAuliffe, Simpson, De La Rue, W Brown maybe Garcia? all should be at our first pick if no one more exciting slides

Just watched the highlights of these players all look good prospects, splitting hairs to decide which one to take.

I’ve seen this kid play and have spoken to a couple of his teammates and a parent. Internally, he’s rated higher than DeMattia. Injuries harmed his stock, purely because of timing.

My Cup Day form guide. - Real Smokey and can run the distance. Excellent turn of foot and disposal by foot is very good. Can lead. Definite mid/fwd option. Must consider.

Sheepy you've made me like him even more now, to the point he is the one I want. Potential steal of the draft written all over him.

They run very similar if he turns out as good as Aussie it'll be a big plus to whoever drafts him.

I think the opposite. Higher placed teams tend to be more settled and can afford more developmental time into young players instead of the added pressure of exposing them straight away to speed up any rebuild etc.

One thing to remember is Darcy Wilson came into the year weighing 66kgs. He has extremely strong legs but an upper body that of Kermit the Frog at the moment. Trains hard in the gym but he'll take a few years to build any sort of break away strength like Dangerfield has. Danger is built like a brick ****house.

Development time in the VFL and only bring them in when they are ready. Whereas we put Dow, LOB and Samo in the deep end.

I'm sold

Apparently played a cracking game for the Academy up against out VFL side earlier this year, so wouldn't have gone unnoticed by our recruiters - mind you it wouldn't have gone unnoticed by the other 17 either.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking we need to bring another mid through the draft after we lost Dow, Philp and Ed at the end of the year - you could probably even throw Fish in that lot as well if we recruited him primarily as a mid - but our depth has become depleted.

We picked up Elijah who I reckon is more of a true mid than forward - but apart from Carroll and possibly Ollie, we don't really have any developing mids. With Crippa, George and Doc fast approaching 30, he could be an astute/bargain pick.

I'm thinking now we go for a mid and small/creative forward with our 2 picks. Another running half back is probably another area of need, but we've likely got Matt Duffy earmarked for that role.

Great evasion and kicking goals from outside 50 on either peg. How did I overlook him so badly? Not a fan of picking off highlights reels. Small body of work, but those skills are next level compared to what is too often accepted these days.
