Not sure if many are aware of the rule but if Gold Coast make finals they are only allowed to match bids on 2 of their Academy kids. They've currently got Walter (Expected top 5), Read (Expected top 15) and Rogers (Expected top 15). Further, if they make a prelim they are only allowed access to one of their Academy kids.

If Ethan Read was somehow available as one that they decided they couldn't match on I'd love to get him in as a genuine swingman. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a consensus top 10 prospect by the end of the year.

203cm Ruck/Fwd - Love his physicality and he looks to be a natural footballer all over the ground.

I had absolutely no idea about those academy restrictions.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the update, 203 Ruck/Fwd with Physically & natural footballer great qualities, we need these traits across the park too
Austin should have as much support as is required to able to recruit astutely, it’s so vitally important, in special cohort like 2023 3 quality recruits can change the destiny of a club. One only needs to look at Ports Drafting in 2018 Rozee, Butters & Duursma all guns.

Would be surprised if the Suns make finals. Their list isn't ready yet. But I'd definitely love a crack at Read :thumbsu:

Are the restrictions only limited to kids taken in the 1st round or two? Thanks for the info.

Can't remember if theres any restrictions regarding 1st/2nd round. Highly doubt any of the 3 get past the first round either way. Walter is probably number 2 right now to Reid so even if they can match all 3 they may seriously struggle to get the picks to match all 3 if they keep performing. If Rogers and Read continue to elevate they could be looking at bids on 3 within the top 10.

Walters form makes it a certainty that they'll be trading their first pick this year though. They won't be able to get up to Pick 2 to get in before him. Could be a pick we target with our future first and any picks we can get from some trades this year. They've also got a few good NGA kids next year they'll need points for too.

We should be targeting their first round pick then with our F1 or trying to work out a deal.

It will be interesting to see how clubs bid, I was staggered that Daicos slid in his draft year, even Blakey and Gulden slid lower than expected, I wonder if other clubs don’t watch them due to being tied to another club or if they just don’t think it’s worth the effort to bid on them.

Some videos of the SA and VIC C boys I think we'd be having a look at. If Duursma is expected to develop into a mid at the next level I feel like I'd prefer to take Mckercher, but he definitely has some X Factor traits and ability to play forward which Mckercher doesn't.

Credit to Noobermensch on the draft board for making these.

Liked Duursma's tenacity as a mid in this video, I'd be happy with him.

Duursma definitely has the ability to change games and play 5 minute patches of brilliance. I think I'm just scarred from players of ours who have been teasing us for years now without ever becoming consistent players.

If we really want an X Factor up forward I'd prefer Watson, if we want a pacey mid who uses the ball well I'd prefer Mckercher. Not sure if I'd be massively excited with Duursma but he does have some very desirable traits for us.

I've only watched a couple of highlight vids, but Duursma looks exciting when he switches it on. Good size, explosive, strong overhead, goal sense, plays hybrid/dynamic FWD or outside mid, might be available at our first pick.
What's his disposal like?

Disposal is like the rest of his game. Sometimes awesome, sometimes ****. He's very similar to Rozee early on in terms of how he plays - different in how they move and how they use their athletic traits but very similar in that you see glimpses of pure brilliance and then disappears for long stretches or starts butchering every touch.

I think I'm of the mindset that if we want a player who can play that Mid/Fwd role as a mismatch I'd rather we just pony up for Reid who's frankly just better at both positions and more consistent across the board. Otherwise I'd prefer a pure mid or a pure forward. Mckercher, Caddy, Watson.

Duursma is just a really high risk high reward type of pick imo with obvious upside if things go well. Either going to be a gun or a bum.

As I mentioned, I think I've just been burnt too many times by guys like Mcgovern, Martin, Cuningham etc. I know thats a lot to do with injury but I like players who are consistently good and sometimes great, not sometimes great and sometimes ****

Marc Mcgowan has an interesting article where he seems make out the Blues will be looking at adding to our midfield this draft with one of Mckercher, Duursma or Sanders if they are there at our pick.

'De Koning could re-sign for two years and become a free agent at the end of 2025, or accept what would be a lucrative, free agency-like deal from one of the Saints, Swans or Cats that could be seven years long.

Those clubs would have to stump up a first-round draft pick for him, too, which would give the Blues options as they try to get back on track. They are expected to make at least four selections in this year’s national draft, with midfielders Zane Duursma, Colby McKercher and Ryley Sanders all looming as nice fits.

I'd be very disappointed if we ended up picking Sanders. Not what we need at all imo.

My order of suitability for us at our first pick would be in order:
  • Watson
  • Caddy
  • Mckercher
  • Duursma
  • Wilson (If we finish closer to the 8)

Duursma looks like an inside mid not someone who can spread and connect from stoppage. I like him but he is not the burst player required

I think duursma can play both inside and outside. The latest game showed how good he was on the inside. My understanding was that he had previously played more outside or forward kicking goals.

He will be one to watch for rest of the year. People are looking for more consistency from him. If he does that whilst being effective both mid and forward he will be top 5 and a good pickup for Carlton.

Assuming this is the Port Adelaide Duursma brother/cousin?? Not the most common surname
Younger brother. He’s an interesting prospect and certainly must be in our mix if we finish around the bottom 5. He’s much more developed as a hybrid forward than a midfielder at this stage of his development in my view. He has shown some signs as a midfielder without dominating that position (ie there are better pure midfielders in the draft). A bit of a boom or bust prospect in general but also game to game.
