Another heavy compromised draft... if its a National competition then treat it that way otherwise team like the giants which i not there fault will just have good young players leave to big clubs for draft picks & year by year have 2 or 3 picks in the top 20 when there pretty much playing finals every year ... thats why draft has lost its appeal

We've only got room for 1 more Cat B, right?
Unless the AFL have changed the rules, we can only preselect one Irish player as a Cat B anyway. If we were looking at a 2nd, it'd have to be as a Cat A.

"Irish players can be signed directly to a club’s Rookie List under the International Player Rule and do not have to go through the draft. Previously, Irish players could not be listed as Category B rookies but took a spot on the main Rookie List.

Clubs can now list one Irish player as a Category B rookie but for each additional Irish player rookie listed, that player will be deemed to be a Category A rookie and the club will forfeit its last selection in the Rookie Draft for each additional player listed."

The news article ferris linked also mentioned Duffy being signed as a Category A rookie. Interesting. Puts a bit more pressure on our available list placements. We already have 44 on senior+rookieA. Duffy would make 45. Cap is 42. Also need to ensure there is room on the senior list for 3 players prior to the draft. Makes me wonder if we're only looking at one draft selection (and two rookie upgrades). Even in that minimal scenario, we'd still have to delist/trade/retire 4 players. And that's not counting any incoming trades/free agents.

Yeah, I noticed that as well... "Rising Dromard star Duffy has been offered a professional rookie A international contract, pending a medical in the coming weeks." Suggests that there may also be a second player we're signing as a Cat B. This is probably a ridiculous comment, but is bringing in a couple of overseas player a potentially more sustainable option than just one. You could only imagine how daunting it would be for a 19yo kid to fly solo across half way across the world to pursue a career. And unfortunately we don't have a Zach Tuohy at the club to take the Irish players under their wing when they arrive.

It's gonna be fascinating to see our list strategy the end of the year.

If we're only looking to take a single pick in the ND, are we then looking to somehow upgrade that pick using our future 1st. Either way, it may well end up looking something like:

  • 1 pick in the ND
  • 2 rookie upgrades (Boyd, LOB/Cotters)
  • 1 Cat A rookie
  • 1 Cat B rookie
  • 1 FA/Trade

In that scenario, we'd only have to delist/trade/retire 5 players....and possibly even reshuffle a Philp back onto the rookie list.

Akeui is Cat B.

Unsure if that affects the situation as there may be Irish specific rules

Yeah, there is - see BH's post a couple up.

So, Akeui and an Irishman for the 2 Cat-B slots next year. Duffy to be a Cat-A rookie (if the news story is accurate).

Added to the fact we have two Irish lasses playing AFLW this year. Plenty of scope for a support mechanism for all of them.

So we can have as many International rookies as we like?
Article says that, but it's misleading. Clubs are still bound by the limits on senior, Cat-A rookie, and Cat-B rookie lists. I guess perhaps they meant that clubs could name 36 international senior list players if they wanted to?

Clubs can also set up an "International Scholarship List" which is limited to 24 players (8 new per year maximum). But this doesn't entitle those players to play at AFL level.

If we are adding an Irish player as a Cat A rookie as per the report, we will categorically be upgrading multiple existing rookies at season’s end.

Also suggesting we will add a second Irishman as a Cat B beside Akuei.

Reckon we don’t bank on anymore than two draftees in the National Draft. List spots are an absolute premium.
