Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Was just looking at the excellent draft reference on the D&T board; was wondering why we didn't have a second rounder this year... we turned this years pick 36 into last years pick 30 (Cowan) in a deal with the Pies. Not a bad bit of business to get what worked out to be a 6 pick upgrade for free, as well as a years development into Lachie. Backed ourselves to get a player we wanted and to have a decent year on the field.

Not bad at all...

Plus last year is looking like a better draft. Doubt you get a player the caliber of Cowan at 30 this year let alone 36.

Even better business when you consider this draft is considered weak and that pick could end up in the 40s after Academy and F/S picks.
Makes totally sense to move Dow and Fisher on for 3rd rounders, right?

The "vanilla" qualities of Ollie Murphy are a positive for a young key defender. He appears to do many of the basics well for 100 minutes. I think you can coach the "polish" like taking the game on. I don't have a context of the whole draft but this would be a solid KPP with a pick around 20.

Christian Mardini with a late pick please 🙏
Yep, I liked the look of him in the champs. Could be a good late pick.

Another I was really impressed with in the Vic Country vs Vic Metro match was Jacob Grant from the Dandenong Stingrays. Took a couple of great marks - 191cm, 84kg forward - undersized key forward whose leap allows him to play above his size.

A later option in draft to Ollie Murphy might be will Dawson.
200cm key defender. Might go in 3rd round. Just watched his highlights, seems big and athletic. Looks strong in the contest.

Interested to know if anyone has seen a bit of him.

Key defender named Dawson? Surely Ross Lyon will recruit him.... :p

Collard would be a great get. If we can get him settled in vic and settled off the field.

Our WA retention track record is pretty good though.

Agree. We might get a pick from Fish or Paddy before 40 this year which is required to pinch him off WC.

The great Eddie Betts was illiterate and introverted when he was Collard's age. 2 years after being drafted, Shane O had to pick Eddie up half way up the Hume Highway and convince him to return and stick it out.

There will be lots of rumours emenating from the West. Some true, some untrue, some exaggerated. WC will love him to go past 40.

We will do our homework, like everyone, and IF there are risks we are in a better list position than most to back ourselves for a potential big upside. Of course, if his recruitment is unviable, so be it. If he flat out doesn't want to move, then so be it. But having things to work on and work through should be no drawback. That's what development is for.

I don't feel comfortable indulging in the speculation about a young bloke personally, i'll just say, back in talent and back in your club when you are in a better place to do so than most of your competitors.

Collard is a potential game breaker. If he doesn't make it like "unrisky" Williamson or O'Brien or McCreadie, so be it.
