Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

I think it looks pretty certain that Pick 8 is the last pick of the top tier players. So simply, we won't have a choice who we get. It will be the one left. Which is MUCH better than having Pick 9 and the choice of the rest. That happens to be * lol.

At this stage, the most likely to be there at 8 seem to be O'Sullivan or Caddy, so we better be rapt in one of them if we make that deal. Safe to say Austin and crew aren't stupid, so if we make the deal before the night, safe to assume they are.

That would be your read too i guess, even though the ol Tassie in you might be drawn to Sanders lol.
I'd be pretty confident in either one of Caddy or O'Sullivan. Darcy Wilson and James Leake the next two on my rankings but think they are a clear tier down from the top 10 so you'd be disappointed trading up that high and ending up with one of them (despite both having plenty of great attributes)

Yep, O’Sullivan not rumoured, but would be rapt if we called him out.

FWIW, I very much doubt we are getting #8. Other clubs have more draft capital.

It all comes down to our Future 1st and where Geelong rate us. It's clear that trading back from pick 8 is going to mean Geelong miss out on a gulf of quality to whatever pick they move back to but if they think we'll be lower part of the 8 or even missing out next season then our F1 holds considerable value to them. So far its shaping as a midfield stacked draft in 2024 which is the area of the ground Geelong's desperate to fix.

Big gamble for them if they do a deal with us and we end up finishing top 4

Might also come down to what they plan on doing with their picks next year.

If they're eyeing off a quality out of contract player, they may want to secure an extra first rounder now so that they're in a strong position to manufacture a trade.

He’s got some real presence hey, like a 6’6” Steven May.

I agree, I wouldn’t do the deal if I was Geelong. Would much prefer to stay in that top 12.

Setting aside the GC academy players, I think there is a reasonably clear 4 tiers of talent

7, 7, 15, the rest

The names differ slightly depending who recruiters like, but the level of talent has those different levels

Interested in who firms and slides
Mine is 3, 9, 6 and the rest.

If this rumoured trade doesn’t go ahead and Austin does draft for depth with those two picks, what are the areas of depth to be filled?

I think with Setterfield, Curnow and Dow moving on an on Baller is definitely one of the spots. Then are we going for another Lemmey type developing tall or a half forward which is seen as the main position of need in the 22 and we have just lost Honey as a depth player.

Speed into the half-forward line, ideally a quick forward-mid.
And then a KPD.
For mine it`s the other way around, as we need a rebounding KPD first unless Young finds some consistent form next season, and I think that Carlton will play E. Hollands (if that deal ever gets done.....?!!) as a half-forward and a part time mid as he is a strong overhead mark and a natural runner just like Ollie is, so just a bit more mid depth after that perhaps......just how I see our needs, as Gov does a good job down back but I feel that we need a bigger guy to help out down there......

Can I ask why people would prefer us to take a Sanders type if we moved up to a higher pick. Contested mids seem pretty low on the priority list atm imo
They seem to be under the impression that Sanders has a bit of burst and speed to him based off his highlights

Bit like thinking Crippa is a zippy mid because every now and then he bursts out of the front of stoppage

Does have some burst

Don't think he is there at 8

Who would you liken Sanders to Arrow? From current players. Just looking at his highlights he reminds me a little of Zorko
JHF with less speed
Agree don't think he gets to 8, also think us acquiring pick 8 is a pipe dream.
Have you done a rankings post Arrow? Pretty keen to see it if you have one. 👍
Not finished yet, still watching a few more games

Do you see Duursma transitioning to a midfield role after a few years at AFL?

That's how I see the top three.
Personally think Walter and McKercher are going to be special players going forward.
I really rate Rogers if it wasn't for his size I'd have him before Reid.
Thanx for your thoughts.

Getting Sanders at 8 is wishful thinking not to say a miracle couldn't happen but I haven't won Division 1 either!
I do hope we can get another pick other than 21-26 as I think an absolute steal would be Shaun Mannagh from the Werribee Tigers, kicked 6.2 ,27 touches in losing GF team to GC. Small forward with speed, skill and a bit of swagger a definite upgrade for us and at 26 ready to go! Would post a highlights link here but I am technologically ******ed you might say.....
