Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Assuming we don't trade up, who would you pick at #22 and #28 for us?
I have found it harder to settle on players in our range this year than ever before. As has been said by many, outside the top 10 or so, the next 20-25 are very bunched and very subjective.

The professionals will be more over what the order is likely to be. I like Zakostelsky, but would hope he gets to our second pick. If that is the case, our first probably goes to a midfield hybrid type with relatively exposed form. Does Tholstrup last that long?

If ZZ needs our first, it brings in the mid/forward types like Sanchez, or perhaps one of the genuine small forwards I named elsewhere. Charlie Edwards some chance at either pick, but didn’t finish off the year as well as his peak through the year.

It is a tough draft hand, and I think we will have plenty of contingencies. rather than relying on a specific order, perhaps we vary our second for a brace of types.

Not many mids around our picks so it may be a tall and a small forward option.

I am less confident about who will be around at our range than recent years.

Sorry for hedging or flip flopping, but it is a strange year.

Just based on highlights and nothing more:

For our first pick #22:
I'm keen on Tholstrup, as he adds to our list - i.e. something we don't have or lack of on our list
If not then CEdwards

Then for #28:
A speedy fwd - there are a few to choose from, but they got to be a speedy and natural crumbing/ opportunistic small fwd

Mannagh for our third, if we are taking a third or if he lasts to our rookie pick

Quite like a consensus draft (I did one last year, and ferris has in the past). Haven't done one yet this year, but GoTigers on the main draft board has:

Thanks I have amended, he still remains at pick 34 in the consensus rankings

Has Edwards available at our first pick and ZZ at our second (picks 27 and 30 allowing for bid matches).

I would take Tholstrup in a heartbeat with our 1st pick if available. Followed closely by Collard.

Our 2nd pick I want another rebounding defender with genuine speed and line-breaking ability. Luamon Lual or Tew Jiath.

I think enticing clubs to swap a vey low (ie top 10) "now" pick for a future 1st rnd pick is a hard sell.
I never mentioned trading it for a top 10 pick and I certainly wouldn't be taking Collard top 10 either.

While I'd be keen on Austin trading up for Caddy with at 8 as we're rumoured to have been trying to, I wouldn't expend that sort of currency for any others around that mark. Murphy, Windsor etc.
I'd be hoping to split our 1st next year for a late first this year and a future 3rd for points next year. I expect most clubs would have us finishing somewhere between 7-2 on the ladder so I don't think thats far fetched.

Imo Collard will go between 15-20 after his stellar combine. He's the best talent of the small forwards outside of Watson and if we want a player of his talent (question marks on him or not) we would need to get within that range. A few months ago that was not the case but to run a 6:30 2km as a player with his speed and agility, combined with his finish to the season has seen his stocks rise to around that range. Twomey and others have reported the same.

According to The Footy Show FB page:
The Eagles have reportedly turned down North's latest offer of pick 2 & two of their late first-rounders for picks 1 & 23. They also rejected Melbourne's offer of picks 6, 11, 42 & a future first-rounder for pick 1, according to AFL Media's Cal Twomey.

I don't see how North could add 3 or their F1 to pick 2 even with something coming back. Thats probably what it would take to get it done but would be irresponsible. I could see them improving their current offer to include the 2 plus the 2 late 1sts with nothing coming back but doubt Eagles do that unless they really don't want Reid.

North's offer is pretty good. They might now be thinking they're better off with 5 first round picks and be done with it.
It probably depends a bit on which picks they offered.
15+17 is a bit stronger than 17+18.
Especially as first pick in the second round (Eagles' 23) can be quite valuable.

Yeah, it's hard to please both parties atm
But, I think it will be traded - eventually

For me, fair but enticing enough to WCE would be 2, 15 and possibly 18 (or something in the 20s) for 1 (and no other picks)

9 times out of 10 I’d be trading pick 1 for those offers but I would struggle to this season. Who will be available with those later picks all seem like abit of a hope and see.
Every chance they are bottom again next season and if they add Reid and pick 1 next year they may have just built the best midfield in the game.

Yeah, i think the only deal that will tempt The Eagles is 2, 15 and 17 with no 23 coming back.

Don't think there is much between Harley and Walter but there is a fair way between Harley and the rest.

I also don't think the Eagles have any Go Home scares from Harley. They are a Big Club used to handling Big Players, and from interstate. I see them taking him without hesitation unless North give them something to really think about with 2, 15 and 17 str8 up.

And that would only be of interest because there are rated WA talent at those picks. Curtin up high and 3 of Tholstrop, Collard, Edwards, Hardeman or Zak at 15, 17 and 23. It's a nice balanced haul for what they need.

But Harley....still not sure they'd take it.

And if i were North, i conversely wouldn't go past that offer here. They could happily go to the draft with 5 first rder's and look themselves in the mirror and say they did their best to get Harley.

May be an opportunity for another club to get involved. If Norf come around to giving up 2 and 3, they're gonna want something better than 23 back - prob Adelaide's 14 or GWS 16. Maybe our F1 could do it? In which case, WC might come knocking.
