We could do a mini-comp out of this with either two games per club or 3 shorter games between the teams in a round-robin. I think it adds a bit of interest perhaps. The AFL isn't particularly imaginative with these things.

Good result, looks like we'll play WC in a 'scratch match' on 23-24th of Feb and an official trial game on the weekend after against Freo.

Definitely want the harder game against better opposition as that final warm up.

Port Adelaide and Adelaide will both travel to Perth in late February for their scratch matches and likely stay on to play their official pre-season games the following week.

Fremantle is set to host Adelaide in the club-organised clash, leaving West Coast to face Port Adelaide in late February. Venues and formats are still being worked through by the clubs.

Both South Australian clubs expect to be in Perth the following week for their official pre-season games, which are still to be confirmed.

The WA and SA clubs expect they will swap opponents, meaning the Dockers will host the Power in the clubs' main pre-season hitout before round one, and the Eagles will meet the Crows in early March.

I wish people would stop complaining about our fixture this year. We play 13 games at AO ffs! Any non-vic team would love that. So what if we have to go to Perth for preseason? We get a big rest before R1. It doesn’t hurt preparation one iota.

Complaints are so Crow-supporting-loser mentality stuff. Toughen up and get on with it.

Going away is probably beneficial for practice so I agree not a huge issue, however it is definitely a bit strange we are playing both games interstate. Not sure how that got worked out. Should've been a home and away practice game.

The complaints aren't about Port travelling, it's about the Vic clubs molly coddled as always. Boo hoo I had to spend some time away from my family in a luxury resort, whilst millions around the world lost their jobs or lives during the height of COVID-19. 'Yeah, having to compete for a flag away from the MCG was so hard, that those storming the beaches at Gallipoli would have been proud!'.

The guys at Matter of Stats rated us the 5th best side in 2022 and reckon we have the 4th hardest draw in 2023. They rated Richmond as the 2nd best side and reckon they have the 7th hardest draw.

These guys are different to HPN footy who invented the PAV - Player Approximate Value - and write long articles for the ABC every month or every second month using their stats formulas. The HPN guys cross over with Matter of Stats guys and acknowledge each others work, but collect or concentrate on different data.

In 2015 the Matter of Stats guys introduce MoSSBODS - Matter of Stats' Scoring Shot Based Offence-Defence System

In 2017 they adjusted that for conversion of scoring shots to produce MoSHBODS - the Matter of Stats Hybrid Offence-Defence System.

Their analysis of 2023 draw includes

1) Their ranking of who is top 6, middle 6 and bottom 6, not the final ladder/placings.
2) Venue performance
3) Strength of Schedule
4) Game by game Net Venue Performance Value
5) Strength of the Missing schedule - ie strength of 11 games not played to make a 34 game season.

Its more detailed than what other people have done and published. The big difference is that they don't use the simple ladder placings but their calculated strength of each side. They conclude

CONCLUSION

If we weight the two components of schedule strength - say average quality of the opposition faced at 75%, and net venue effects at 25% - we might summarise the teams' relative Strength of Schedules as follows (with teams’ final 2022 ladder positions shown in brackets)
  • Tough Schedules: Western Bulldogs (8th) and Sydney (2nd)
  • Harder Schedules: Fremantle (6th) and Port Adelaide (11th)
  • Slightly Harder Schedules: Richmond (7th), West Coast (17th), Essendon (15th), and Collingwood (3rd)
  • Roughly Average Schedules: Melbourne (5th) and Hawthorn (13th)
  • Slightly Easier Schedules: North Melbourne (18th), St Kilda (10th), GWS (16th), and Adelaide (14th)
  • Easier Schedules: Carlton (14th), Geelong (1st), Brisbane Lions (4th), and Gold Coast (12th)
Relative to the AFL’s intentions, you could make a case based on this listing that:
  • Port Adelaide, West Coast, and Essendon did worse than they might have expected
  • Melbourne, Geelong, and Brisbane Lions did better than they might have expected
As I say most years, Strength of Schedule is quite a challenging metric to define and measure, so you’ll get a better sense of it and be more able to make your own assessment by reading a variety of approaches.

Re the double up games and who plays whom twice and who doesn't, they said;

On this measure, Sydney’s schedule was furthest away (in a detrimental sense) from what it would have enjoyed in an all-plays-all home-and-away fixture, Geelong’s was second-furthest, and Port Adelaide’s third-furthest. Port Adelaide is unique amongst the teams outside the Top 6 in that they are the only team to miss out on playing each of GWS, West Coast, and North Melbourne twice.

Conversely, North Melbourne’s schedule was furthest away in a beneficial sense, West Coast’s second-furthest, and Hawthorn’s third-furthest.

The sanfl fixture is good. What I look for is sanfl games after the afl or as a curtain raiser to the afl, so we don’t have to hold back sanfl players in case there‘S a late out.

Like the afl, the SANFL has only scheduled the exact time and day of games to mid June. In that time there are 10 double ups (SANFL and afl games on the same weekend) and 7 of those fit the bill.

Only 3 times will we need to hold any SANFL players back until mid June.

I gather that we will be staying the week in WA in between.
6 quarter in the first game is good so most of the list gets a run.
