Article on Adelaide Now and we have a number of players out of contract in 2023, looking at the list there are a fair few wait and see and some you’d say no already. Out of contract by category for me:

Sign Now
Doedee
Schoenberg
Worrell
Butts
McAdam
Taylor
Nankervis

Wait
Tex
Jones
Newchurch
Borlase
Murphy

Gone
Sloane
Hately
Crouch
Seeds
McPherson
McAsey

IMO that’s a lot of uncertainty over the list and a fair number that should go. Going to be an interesting 2023.

Just can’t see the value in letting Doedee go as a free agent, he’s not going to attract a big contract to get us decent compo.

Hately for depth is one you can definitely wait on as no one else will pick him up

Makes no sense to sign Hately immediately & not re-sign Doedee & Jones.

Playing on through injury really drives a player's perceived value into the ground
Seems like he's never really hit the level we expected after his 2018 season. Always seems to be struggling with something.

I also think that ACL has cost him some of the speed and agility he once had.

Not bad.

I'd have Schoenberg on the wait list or at least sign on a modest deal. Got the feeling he's one of those who will coast if he gets a big contract.

Don’t reckon you’d need to give Schoenberg a big contract to keep him, maybe the next one if he comes on

Probably be a 2nd rounder for Doedee as a FA. Given the list profile it's not like we're desperate to bring in more youth and he's one of the few experienced pieces we have down back.

People acting like he's Jake Kelly or something and doesn't have a lot to offer outside some decent defensive work.

Reckon that’s pretty close, except ‘Wait’ for Hately instead of ‘Gone’

Agree re: the uncertainty, hopefully we don’t jump the gun on re-signings like we have at times over the past two years

Tex has a couple of years left in him just like Hawkins at Geelong. And also, a defacto leader.
Sloane and Crouch need big years to stay on. Nicks will give them opportunities. He's under the pump himself.

Should be aiming for 6-8 list spots at the end of the year.

Anything less than 6 spots would be a fail. Need to take at least 1 first, 2 seconds and 2 thirds at the national draft plus rookies and probably a free agent.

Should basically be seen as a second phase of list rebuild, cleaning out all the players from the first phase that didn't work out

Considering Doedee is a third or (more realistically) fourth tall, he's quite replaceable if he decides to go, at least on field. That said, it's certainly is a bit of a dagger to the idea we're starting to build a culture that footballers want to be a part of if he does.

Anything more than 5 new faces would be a fail.

We have a first and 2 seconds but no third or fourth round picks for next year. With Welch coming in 2024, we could trade our future first for a 2023 first, but then couldn't trade out our second or third round picks for 2024.

So to get 6-8 new kids in the door, 2-4 of them would be from picks in the 70s or later. The hit rate for those picks is pretty poor. We would be better off keeping our 6th to 8th worst current players and back in their development.

kirky getting a spot in 24?

If we don't have the picks we need to get them by trading picks or players.

Taking only 3 picks at the main draft again when we don't make finals isn't good enough

We will have some rookie spots as well which we should fill, and we're due to make a decision on both of our cat B rookies this upcoming offseason.

6-8 new faces is fine.

I am fine with delisting Sloane, Crouch, McAsey, Seed, Moose and Borlase.

I would move two of Newchurch, Murphy and Hately to the rookie list and delist one. We need to upgrade Murray to the main list.

That gives us 4 (or 3 if we don't trade our future first) main list spots, no (or one) rookie spots and 2 cat b spots.

If we need another list spot, Nank would be next in line to delist. IMO, bringing in any 70+ draftee over Nank would be a fail.

At this point, we'd probably be better off delisting Murphy and Hately as well. Both are right at the bottom of our depth profiles with little chance of making our best 22, and we don't really need too much depth.

Better to have some low % shots on the rookie list, especially if 2023 is touted to be a decently strong draft.

You might be right and I think we'll know by the end of the season.

Hately showed a bit in the SANFL at the end of last season, but we have a lot of depth inside mids (and he isn't an AFL level outside mid).

Murphy and McHenry will both likely be fringe players by the end of the year, but Murphy could transition to a small defender, where we lack depth. Personally, I'd give Taylor a run there with some minutes on ball. Think he could add some class on exit.

(Even if we delisted both, would still only be 5 new faces)

We should be looking at bringing in a FA in 2023.
