Yep, I understand that Marshall isn't the answer now but he might be in a few years time.
Himmelbergs been on our list for 5-6 years now and we still haven't tried him down back, what have we got to lose ? He aint getting a spot up forward any time soon
Himm is far too lazy a footballer to be a defender.. as a forward his attitude when his opponent has the ball shows you all you need to know about Himm’s attitude toward defending..

The lad barely bothers even jogging after them most of the time!..

Laird would be 3rd or 4th cog in the best few midfield groups in the comp. He's not elite, but a reliable soldier that does a job. He wouldn't get those touches in good midfield units because he'd be sharing his time elsewhere, not totally in that stat rich area. This is a common mistake made when valuing the 4 players that we deploy to that role. Good midfields share the load, we're not and we don't.

Do they though? Looking at most teams CBA’s for midfielders the majority of clubs use a combination of 4 guys. A couple of clubs go deeper but the majority are not that dissimilar from us

Disagree that Laird is an elite mid of the comp. He’s a great accumulator, but has little hurt factor. He’d be a foot soldier in a top end midfield. Elite in ours though.
Yep. Both Laird and Keays need to look more. They need to be looking to the outside for guys like Dawson, Milera etc running past a lot more instead of blazing away.

Lets be real, we badly need a mature age KPD to rookie on given cupboard is very bare now. Literally we would have to be looking at Borlase if Murray or Butts go down or have an extended run out of form.
We would have known Casey was likely to be off the list by draft time and didn’t prioritize it. Maybe they don’t think it’s as high priority?

As someone else said, maybe they don’t think we necessarily need (but can play) butts and Murray in the same team and 1 plus Doedee and worrell is fine.

Maybe rumours of a redman or even hinmrkberg as a FA are on the mark and we feel our mix with one of them added is ok in the bigger picture?

Could Will Kelly be our target for a KPD post next year, worth remembering Hamish bid on him in his draft year and the Pies only gave him a 1 year extension late in the piece of trade week. He's had a wretched run with injuries but could be a real candidate for Burgess to get fit and firing? Showed a heap in his draft year as a tall swingman though it was thought he's end up in Defence.

pretty sure his km running has always been peak.

He's more laconic than lazy.

We should be at least trying him as a key defensive option.

the fact Laird is considered to be our “elite midfielder” just goes to show how bad our midfield has been over the last couple of seasons.. essentially one of the leagues worst

getting 30+ possessions a game doesn’t instantly = elite.

It’s the travesty of crows football..

Himm has a shitload of talent.. but low levels of drive, work ethic and attitude.

Keays has shitloads of drive, work ethic and attitude.. but fxxk all talent.

it’s been the story of our list the last few seasons.. so many types of either of the two.. so many “almost” types.

Foot soldier is also a pretty poor description.

He would be in the top 2 mids for most clubs and top 3 for the other 4-5 clubs.

And before you complain about the midfield rotation again, actually provide the CBA stats that that show he’s getting significantly more time than other similar mids

Laird was 8-9 in the comp for CBA’s last year - behind Neale, Oliver, Petracca, Simpkin, Miller, Rowell, Cripps and Brayshaw.

The below site is interesting to look at how we changed our mix during the year due to either injury, form or experimentation for our CBA mix

Oooft...

I guess there is some quality ahead of him but not even the slightest look in

So we basically run 5 mids through there, against Port it was 4. Port ran 6 against us and smashed us. Another ? on Nicks.

Our number seems ridiculously low. We’ve got how many mids on our list? Why? Scattergun approach with our drafting to get to 4-5 who can play?

The number should increase this year with Rachelle, Rankine and Sloane. Ideally Pedlar would get the odd burst too so see how he goes.

Who won the Centre Clearance tally in that game Port or the Crows?

We won by 1, we also won overall hit outs 53-29 and lost overall clearances 45-40. You’d think given Port had Finlayson and Dixon as their rucks we should have won clearances convincingly, we also lost the game by a lot.
We also won the centre clearances in round 3 against Powa with Lycett rucking, so that's not your answer

You could argue the quality of our clearances but across the season our midfield actually stacks up OK re clearance numbers.

Interesting we rank 3rd for clearances but only 13th for inside 50s, 13th for marks inside 50 and 14th for shots on goal

Bulldogs - 1st clearances, 4th inside 50s, 4th marks inside 50, 3rd shots on goal
Lions - 2nd clearances, 6th inside 50s, 6th marks inside 50, 4th shots on goal
Suns - 4th clearances, 5th inside 50s, 9th marks inside 50, 7th shots on goal
Demons - 5th clearances, 3rd inside 50s, 8th marks inside 50, 6th shots on goal

Suggests our clearances are ineffective at translating into scoring opportunities, at least relative to other top clearance sides

Outside mid/2nd receiver/elite deliverer would fix a lot of that...Hmmm now who could that be?

Total marks (18th) per game is a worry, probably means our players aren't working into space/spreading to become marking options.

It was more like 5, gray's number is pretty low. I don't think why we lost, the whole team looked pretty cooked tbh.

Pretty good format. Shows that even when clubs rotate more numbers through the centre, they generally rely on 2-3 players to do the heavy lifting

It makes sense that clubs, especially the best clubs, would want to use their best center clearance players in the center as often as possible

On the flip side you also see weaker clubs generally rotating more players through CBAs as they try to find that best mix. Except Adelaide of course, our rotations are low for a bottom side

Or we don’t structure up to help out forwards or we are poorly skilled to hit targets. Over recent years we’ve tried to address it by getting decent kicks in but we’ve neglected drafting skilful players for a long time.

Little Neddy is one of the very best spot up kicks to a leading forward at the club, surely you've noticed that part of his game.
