Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Traded Acres, hoped Henry develops and stays.
Both leave.

Get ****ed, Bell.

Henry should’ve just been traded last season and not waste time
It does depend on how you look at the whole situation. If Acres stayed then Henry would have almost certainly not had the same amount of chances to impress and we'd be looking at 4th round selection at best in trade if Henry left this off season having played mostly wafl the whole year. By my count with Acres still here we would have won a handful more games like the North game early last season as he would have made us a better team but by how much its debatable. Either way I don't think Acres is the player we need on the outside to be a contending team in the next season or two. If Johnson, O'Driscol and/or Freddy could win as much football as Acres they'd both be far more damaging than Blake is particularly as they provide more speed on the spread. That's my hope for next season.

I actually thought Joel Smith was one of their best 🤔
Anyway we don’t want a forward line that is simply AFL average. It needs to be one of the best in the league, otherwise we will fall short.
At least Sturt is showing some promise as a medium forward of genuine quality.
Joel Smith is no KPF. Who cares if he happened to be the best of the worst in a particular game?

Nobody has said anywhere that we want a simply AFL average forward line.

My memory from his draft year was his kicking has penetration but isn't super accurate.

The main knock was his contested game or lack thereof, IIRC.
He was known for being a good long accurate kick but prone to turnovers when looking for the short option at times.

GC list manager directly said that we stopped talking to them once the JOM trade came up

I have faith we would have got a deal done if we had stayed in contact
That was because GC were being unreasonable so Walls moved on. I heard a direct interview with Walls very soon after trade deadline. It was in response to bad mouthing put out there by Scott Clayton who was huffing and puffing about Freo.

Walls said we tried to negotiate the whole trade period but their expectations were unreasonable and negotiations ceased and then yes late in the piece they put up the shutters and sorted out Lobb, then Meek/JOM.

They would not budge on F2. To be fair to GC they obviously needed the early picks for academy fellas. However after demanding an F2 Sharp plays whole season in VFL.

They were going to budge, the GC list manager was clearly pissed that we stopped contacting them, they wanted the deal done, they would have folded

He wouldn't have come out and said what he said if they weren't going to trade him.

Then further proof is the fact he sat in the twos all year, they stamped his cards after that.

There would have been something there

Don't think Scott Clayton is at the Suns. Craig Cameron maybe?

(From Lack of discussion from Freo irks Suns as Sharp stays put)

“We had to get something compelling to make the move and I think in the end, Fremantle prioritised other things in the trade period.

“There was some discussion late but we would’ve liked more to be honest.”

Cameron said “it appeared” that a future third-round pick was Fremantle’s “ceiling” for Sharp, who was drafted by the Suns with pick 27 in the 2019 national draft.

“It appeared that was their ceiling but it certainly didn’t get close for us,” he explained.

If we're taking the GC list manager for his word, he was never budging on a F2 (the extent of his budging would've been moving from his previous requirement of the North F2 to any F2 in general).

To me the Sharp situation for Gold Coast was kinda similar to the Henry situation for us last year (tho a Sharp trade was a lot closer than a Henry trade). Both teams, having put a lot of draft capital into their respective players, didn't want to trade them for the sort of paltry price they could receive the next year anyways, and would rather risk their stock rising. Our gamble has worked as Henry's stock has risen, theirs failed and Sharp's stock fell.

The stupid part about Sharp is how little GC value picks in general and the fact that they knew they were only going to match bids this year.

It was a weird hill to die on.
If we can add Sharp to the list, and cheaply I think it’s a win.
Guy will be dog hungry to succeed and get his career on track.

Especially since they’ve shown how much they actually valued him afterwards. Can’t help but feel there was at least some level of spite towards us and Sharp for some reason

Well they are the reason why the Lobb/Hogan debacle didn't totally destroy our rebuild. Maybe some residual resentment from Weller?
