Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Haven’t heard anything out of Freo re: Chol but I watched the mini game between GC v Box Hill and he was the difference.

5 goals, some big hangers and clean at ground level. Field kicking was very good. If Tabs is truly off at seasons end, he would be a decent replacement.

Didn’t hear Jeremy Sharp name mentioned much.

They were going to budge, the GC list manager was clearly pissed that we stopped contacting them, they wanted the deal done, they would have folded

He wouldn't have come out and said what he said if they weren't going to trade him.

Then further proof is the fact he sat in the twos all year, they stamped his cards after that.

There would have been something there
Walls was very circumspect and didn’t give much away. His comments when questioned directly about the GC list manager huffing and puffing as per the quoted article above was along the lines of “there was a big difference in trade rating we had and that GC had. This did not change from earlier trade period negotiations where we put forward what we felt was a compelling offer for Corbett and Sharp. In the end we dealt for those two separately but didn’t stop trying to trade for Sharp. We ended up due to time prioritising the Lobb (which took much longer due to the delays on Dunkley) and then Meek/JOM trades and unfortunately there was no time left, which was disappointing”.

In summary Freo spent hours in negotiations with GC throughout the trade period. GC would not budge on F2. Freo with all the pieces required for Jackson did not consider F2 appropriate value nor did they even have available an F2 to trade, knowing that the North F2 was going to likely end up start of second round. Walls was very strong in his opinion that GC weren’t or hadn’t budged on their price of an F2.

I’m still a bit annoyed we caved and chucked in an F2 with Melbourne for an early third and a fourth round pick (Emmett and Wagner). I would be livid if we just gave up another F2 to GC for Sharp who couldn’t get a game this year.

So we wait 12 months. I don’t know what has happened at GC, and Sharp played a few really good VFL games but pretty sure he wasn’t even named emergency. So I’m willing to agree that he had his card marked. Perhaps a falling out with the coaches…who knows.

The fact that he played out a solid VFL season and his pre-season running time trials were very good give me hope that he could be a value add in a different environment.

I watched most of the second half. Sharp ran the wing width well and was often the one to receive the ball on the way out of d50. He had 10 marks. On many occasions he either kicked long down the line or instead switched back into d50. In general play the ball seemed to be played down the opposite wing and hence he only had 19 possessions.

To be fair I’m pretty sure GC knew they were overpaying for Weller but that was the rare opportunity to get a homegrown young player come back which they thought would have some influence on some of their young players choosing to stay, Tom Lynch and few others that we’re considering moves at the time. Just sort of remember reading the article about it at the time and how the meeting between GC and Weller went. Justified or not I think that was the philosophy at the time. In retrospect it didn’t do much for GC player retention I would have thought, players that wanted to leave still ended up leaving.

I’ve posted before re Weller trade. The AFL offered an extra $500000??? for Weller to be an AFL ambassador. Clayton, on his own, would never have traded pick 2 for him but I believe as time was running he was pressured by GC hierarchy (who in turn were pressured by the AFL) to get the deal done. Clayton’s agitated body language and the fact that Brad Lloyd afterwards said that the “AFL will be happy” indicates to me the finger prints of the AFL all over the deal.
Ultimately it worked for us because we drafted Andy but it annoys me (and Brad Lloyd at the time) that the organisation that is suppose to be impartial (AFL 🤡) was actively enticing a player from us to strengthen their pet club on the GC. Such is life.😏

It could have been they knew he was leaving no matter what so why develop him, give someone else a go

Ultimately it's more than reasonable to say Gold Coast just had better options on the wing than Jeremy Sharp. They have some handy options there, but looking at even his best games at the level, Sharp has looked very ordinary in decision making and execution. Hopefully he's used this year in the VFL to develop in that regard.

I wouldn't mind Elijah Scoble from Perth FC. Key defender. Seems to have good closing speed. Around 195 quite solidly built. Kept Cocking quiet today in the colts final. Wonder where he is rated in the scheme of things. McArdle has him as one of the best from WA for this draft.

Haven’t heard anything out of Freo re: Chol but I watched the mini game between GC v Box Hill and he was the difference.
I read something this week about the knock on Chol is his lack of effort at training, as evident with his time at Richmond and Gold Coast. He doesn't push himself and has a lackadaisical attitute to it all. He could be a contest beast if he had better self-motivation but without it, he's always gonna be seen as a big teddy bear.

(From Lack of discussion from Freo irks Suns as Sharp stays put)

“We had to get something compelling to make the move and I think in the end, Fremantle prioritised other things in the trade period.

“There was some discussion late but we would’ve liked more to be honest.”

Cameron said “it appeared” that a future third-round pick was Fremantle’s “ceiling” for Sharp, who was drafted by the Suns with pick 27 in the 2019 national draft.

“It appeared that was their ceiling but it certainly didn’t get close for us,” he explained.

If we're taking the GC list manager for his word, he was never budging on a F2 (the extent of his budging would've been moving from his previous requirement of the North F2 to any F2 in general).

To me the Sharp situation for Gold Coast was kinda similar to the Henry situation for us last year (tho a Sharp trade was a lot closer than a Henry trade). Both teams, having put a lot of draft capital into their respective players, didn't want to trade them for the sort of paltry price they could receive the next year anyways, and would rather risk their stock rising. Our gamble has worked as Henry's stock has risen, theirs failed and Sharp's stock fell.
Yes but we didn't have our Lobb stock by then

We would have had Dogs F2 if we didnt chase Omeara, I completely understand us not budging on Norths F2

Sean Darcy needs a skin fold trigger in his next contract.

Is it a bad pic or is Darcy looking like he's enjoying the off season
