Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

What do you guys think about picking Sam Menagola as a DFA and offer 1 year contract? We need an experienced winger until stanley develop ,sharp we dont know how it will work, NOD we have to wait how he will develop next year, johnson still developing. Last year if we had an experienced decent winger(not necessary Acres) we will be winning atleast 3 more close games and playing finals. We cant miss finals again, need to keep hitting finals and get experience ?

Anyone listen to Garlick on 6pr? Anything re Darcy?
Ok I just listened. Not very convincing, especially considering they've supposedly been working on this since mid year. Going with the "he's got a big decision to make...contracted for next year" narrative. I haven't really been too worried about losing him but the longer this drags out and the less confident answers that get given the more worried I get.

Nothing on Schultz too when those conversations have been ongoing for a while. Concerns me a bit seeing as the Cox talks seemed to get done very quickly.

Regarding forum banter about Trey Ruscoe, I see Hayden Young's brother Lachie isn't getting another contract. We're spoilt for choice in the rejected medium plodder defender bargain bin!

Wait, that sounds very similar to general Freo talk for "he's leaving"

Young's younger brother?

Are North delisting good players to make way for elite ones with all their charity picks, or is Lachie Young just not AFL quality?

Yeah that's what I'm getting too. I find it hard to believe he's fully committed if he hasn't agreed to anything by this point. Which makes those reports about Darcy agreeing to a 2year and then a 3year deal very strange.
You'd have to extrapolate why the club put that out there. What was the purpose because clearly his manager wasnt on the same page

That list of 8 traded Brisbane players included Darcy Fort from memory. When I listened to gettable they said it was from prelim teams. Fort didn’t play in the 23. Also J.Lyons was delisted by GC and picked up as a DFA. I guess technically you could say he was traded but Jeepers I wouldn’t exactly call that proper free agency addition.

We also have Hamling, Brodie and based on the incl. of Lyons you could argue C.Wagner.

Heard it as well, said that the Darcy’s weee a big Freo family and blah, blah … didn’t hear the start of the convo but I wasn’t convinced and I am very worried based on the tone of the delivery by Garlick…
Don’t want to be too alarmist but, I am worried…

Even all the times I've heard Darcy speak on it (nova) then he doesn't give any concrete answers and just kinda laughs along with the hosts who are overbearing. Big contrast to the last time there were talks over his contract which were shut down almost immediately by him re signing.

My position on losing Darcy is still the same. It's gut wrenching from a culture and intangible perspective and you'd have to question what the **** we are supposed to do in order to be competitive but we could certainly come out ahead from a list and asset perspective if it happened this year

When do we start to get compensation for poor player retention?

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is how dynamic the list management space has become even over the last 10 years.
The 2013 freo list was nearly all draftees. The traded players were role players not stars.
That’s not possible anymore. The environment has completely changed.
Future pick trading and free agency has changed the game. The AFL want more and more player movement.
Hell - they are bringing in a mid season trade window for crying out loud.
I’m a fan of drafting in general over trading, but it’s now impossible to accumulate enough talent from the draft only in a short enough space of time to challenge the top sides. Unless you are getting massive gifts of top end priority picks which we certainly will never ever receive.
We have literally the best drafter in the AFL in David walls and still cant accumulate enough talent without trading. Jackson was a MUST to get. Ya the price was shit but not taking him was not an option. We will not win a flag in my opinion without at least one more A grader traded into this club. Possibly two even.

No chance on Menagola

I'd rather take a chance on Shaun Mannagh from Werribee, 28 touches and 6 goals off a wing in the VFL GF

about 40 goals while averaging 23+ off a wing this year, Mick Barlow gave him a good shout on the latest footy and friends (he would do as his coach but ye)

For me we have to keep Darcy for next year at least, even if he wants to leave this year. If we could get someone in next year as a mature replacement like Naughton or the likes it could be made somewhat palatable to lose him. We get another year of good footy out of him and can always match a RFA offer and force a trade in 2024 if it comes to it.
We just have to put a line in the sand from losing players. It’s not acceptable.
