Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Some cryptic comments from Andrew Mackie about being open to trading pick 7 to cover deficiencies on field. I don't see a scenario where we lose Darcy and win. I know Jackson looked good rucking solo but tough to do for a whole year plus Darcy and Jackson both look good when they go forward, are strong in clearances, and give us a huge point of difference. Trading for the opportunity to draft more 18 yo wouldn't be a great outcome in our timeline.

Really hope the big fella sticks around.

If we were to trade for Ports Future First then maybe Logan Mcdonald is definetly in play next year. We would need some decent picks to get him

To be honest, our pick 21 and F2 for Ports F1 is a good outcome for the club long term, even if it’s pretty boring for the 2023 draft.
I would not be surprised to see port slide back a bit next year.
Yeah the Comments by Andrew Mackie are a bit worrying. Geelong will have no assets to satisfy freo in a trade for Darcy.
Also why is Darcy going to a club that will be out of contention for several years now. Geelong are done in the short term and need to rebuild

Fair enough, I'm just looking at the free agents and targets for this off-season, I'm not seeing anybody else that would really be worth the free hit.

Yeah, seems a very VERY dry off season in comparison to what we usually experience.

I’m just thinking keep it very simple.

Trade Henry. Bring in Sharp. Use picks. Hamling the only question mark.

I'm relatively pro-Ruscoe (in the sense that I think he's better than Ethan Hughes and fills a list need: a dearth of mediums who can play 3rd tall and can both defend and move the ball), but what you've articulated is probably the strongest argument against doing that. He possesses no elite attributes and no especially glaring weaknesses, making him an ideal role player but someone who can never be a real difference maker.

By contrast, if they go to the draft with that sort of list need in mind, they could probably find someone with more glaring weaknesses (coz they're rookies) but more elite attributes. Arie Schoenmaker as an example has an absolute superboot and, if he makes it, could facilitate real slingshot footy off half back (not the best example tho because as a Tasmanian we probably risk losing him to that new team just as he starts getting good).

I’m not anti Ruscoe as such. It’s more list spots are at the absolute premium this year.

Last year? Sure, we had many gaps open up and someone like Ruscoe could’ve been a handy pick up for depth or potential best 22. We did that with Wagner who was a ‘free hit’ so to speak.

I really feel like we’re finding an absolute best 25 locked into the club for 5+ years.

We need high risk high reward or premium trades. Ruscoe doesn’t fit the bill.

Now, in true Freo fashion we all know he’ll become a triple AA over the next 5 years… but that only happens to us 83% of the time.

I really hope we keep Hamling for another year. Davies is still so raw and unsure where to position himself. Cannot expect him to step up if required in 2024.

If Hamling attracts a contract offer of 2 years at another club, then fair enough if he leaves, but we will need a mature replacement.

I find it so strange that players who are 18-19 years old don’t know where to position themselves. It’s like they lose all confidence entering the higher grade. It reeks of an over complicated game plan.

No knock on Davies. He has loads of potential. But when the ball is coming into defence at pace or from a set shot, an experienced defender (like Hamling) knows all the angles. Who to cover, where to start from, who to direct to cover someone else that has gotten free etc etc. That kind of thinking comes with years of experience.
Davies just needs more time both to learn the craft and add muscle to his frame.

I’m the opposite. Kids footy is very different to colts. WAFL & AFL very different again in their own ways.

He would have only been playing regularly in/against gun sides who can use the ball for two or so years and only a year against men. It’s a steep learning curve for all positions.

I have noticed he isn't great with ground balls.
Lachie Neale practises ground-ball gets every day. He makes sure he has touched the footy 1000 times a day doing collects and quick hands.

Volume is often the answer to skills issues. Willingness to take on the volume is half the victory.

Neale also focused on his strengths and made them elite.
Freddy is a speed merchant and can kick goals. He’s a 12 or 13 disposal a game high half forward, that assists in out transition and scoring chains. He can be elite in the AFL in that position doing that job for the team.
He should be isolated in space one on one and use his pace.

He’s a poor ball handler and a two touch merchant far too often to play as a top end winger. You can’t play in the midfield either inside or outside and not have clean hands.
Would be a square peg in a round hole. Would also be taking him away from what he’s good at.

I wasn’t specifically talking about this year. I just meant moving forwards with our current playing list.

I’ve mentioned him a few times but a guy like Tarryn Thomas. He’s not gettable but that sort of player. His risk is off field.

Hypothetically speaking if for whatever reason guys like Van Rooyen, Sam Taylor, Shai Bolten requested a trade to Freo then you go for it. That’s high risk (as in cost). But the type we need.

There’s of course low risk, like Ruscoe… but again what’s the point?

Would love to see us give Shaun Mannagh a crack.
27yo - straight into the R1 team next year and see what he can do.
