Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I think it's unlikely we get any compensation.
I'd prefer to keep Hamling, but Davies should be really pumped for pre-season now.
We'll get some kind of FA compensation. Hamling isnt going to the other side of the country unless it's at least two years on decent coin.

Kind of shocked he's seemingly leaving to be honest, why cant ANY players stay with us for under market value

Maybe you should be talking about Freo more, Tom. Especially about the lack of hand outs from the AFL compared to other clubs that’s been going on since our inception. Maybe he’s right though, maybe we are too quiet in that regard and should *en speak up
All the clubs have been too passive regarding the NGA and nth questions. Freo had been asleep at the wheel over the women's team and what is being done there.

I don't want Logan McDonald or Sharp.

If they weren't from WA, they would just be another just ok forward and a delisted spud.

I am resigned to Sharp coming now, was really hoping that dummy spit going to WCE rumour was going to be true.

Mid next year Sharp is either going to be in the side and the new whipping boy or at Peel with his supporters crying out he would be the difference maker. Then when he gets a late season debut, like Karl Worner, the detractors will immediately pounce.

LMD will cost a heck of a lot more than his worth and I doubt he has it in him to perform to the price of "potential".

Whilst the idea of “improving the list where possible” is good in theory, it takes more than draft picks to get players in. Players need to want to come and need to be affordable. Tbh there doesn’t seem to be too many of them around this year which is OK.

As for Hamling, whilst a 1 year deal would’ve been nice, i don’t see it as a big loss. Not sure bringing someone in for 1 year is a great idea either. If someone goes down, shuffling Young out of the midfield or going with 2 KPD would probably do. Unless we get someone from the scrap heap, it’s probably not worth the effort of trading someone in, only for a draftee in Davies to go past them within a year.

Davies isn’t ready yet. We need another.
An alternative way to look at it is how would we manage injuries across our list.

Pearce - very limited options, essentially shuffling Cox
Cox - Davies, Draper, Ryan playing taller as he's previously done, Treacy
Other defenders - feels like we have sufficient depth/variety to cover

The key challenge for me is how would we manage a game where we had both Pearce and Cox out injured?
Would have been pretty nice to hold onto Hamling for another year.

We can improve our list this year without touching our future first.
Exactly right.
It’s been my point in here for months. You need to remove depth players and bring in new talent with late picks to keep the list fresh.
Hamling, Wilson, Colyer and Benning were depth. 3 of them are at the end of their careers and the other isn’t good enough.
Moving them on is the right call.

Roll the dice in the draft with the extra list spot.
This extra list spot could be how someone like Shaun Mannagh of Werribee gets a rookie list spot with us.
It’s unlikely, but he COULD be the next Michael Barlow. There is a 5% chance.
However there is a 0% chance if we don’t pick him (or someone similar) because we didn’t free up enough list spots to take a punt on him.

This quote sums it up and applies to our list management to a degree.

“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.”

Great platitude, but I was actually looking for some more specifics like players to target or a particular need
It’s a generalisation. “Inside the club” people In the know would be the ones to offer more specifics. I think we need a speedy winger and a forward to replace Son Son and if Hamling goes some KPD depth

Absolutely now we have try and find a replacement. We can’t go backwards with games experience like last year.

I want sharp to come in.

But Logan ... It depends, if the tall Fowards are Logan, Treacy, Amiss then sure why not but if unicorn is on the forward line but not in the midfield then I don't see the point.

What sort of comp', would it be a 2nd or 3rd rounder this year?
Depends on what they are offering him. They seem to have backed a truckload of money up to everyone so there might be some kind of magical land of hopes and dreams where they are giving him 3 years at 500k and we can dream of band 3 but realistically I imagine band 4 (pick 40) at best

If the choice was keep Hamling by giving him 2 years, or let him move to Sydney,
We have made the right decision.
The third round pick we get can be put to better use than tying up 2 years of decent money in a guy that will play at peel for the vast majority of that time.
We are not losing experience from our B22 here. We might gain something better. I’m ok with this.

Agreed with the needs, I don't see line of sight in the trade period though.

Winger - there's a few basic options around, we're still linked to Sharp so may be the one move we do make
Small forward - we need quality over quantity here, and I think this is best obtained through the draft
KPD - given the price of KPDs on the market we would have to pay a lot for depth (picks and/or salary), any pull cord in case of emergency options probably best come from within the list (see my other post). Someone like Lachie Keeffe would be a potential if you thought you were in the window, otherwise looking to convert a KPF is another well trodden path.
