Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

An underrated aspect of this years lack of speculation around big name freo players being traded out - we don’t have to listen to Freomaniac on here and also on the main board ridiculously undervaluing what our own players are worth at the trade table.
“We won’t get more than a third round pick for Logue”
“Fremantle won’t get more than pick 18 for Cerra as he’s out of contract”
And so on. The list goes on.

I’m not sure I could stomach reading some bullshit about Sean Darcy only being worth pick 30, or Brennan Cox for a 3rd rounder.

But i heard we're trading Sean Darcy and Caleb Serong for Patty Cripps....

I don't get the Wilson is gone rhetoric on here. JL has mentioned him by name multiple times this year for his application at Peel and our defensive depth.

I don't think he is a lock, but I do think he is a good chance of another year.
It comes down to list spots and he is a prime candidate as we have to upgrade 2 players

Wouldn't be against him on the rookie list tho, that might be how we make it work

I really hope Sturt finds his kicking boots soon, if instead of kicking 1.2 and an ootf, they start being 3-4 goals, then everyone who just looks at the stats and rubbishes him will shut up

Watch peel and you'll see he has been one of our highest impact players all year, he is so creative on the linkup play and he gets in dangerous spots, bloke has lost his finishing but when he finds it (he will, he has great skills) then he is going to be so dangerous

I agree but he used to be a decent accurate goal kicker, what’s happened??

Can't tell ya tbh, has the yips a bit

Improved work rate in defensive chases leading to being more tired out? We have to remember that he lost nearly 3 years of development early on, he is still building, his tank is getting better, it will all click at once if we persist imo

Straight swap Henry for Dow. Carlton wanted him draft night so why not.
Have a look at the 13 minute mark of the Kayo broadcast from last nights game. (Approx 35 minutes before the game starts)

John Ralph did a whole segment on Paddy Dow and his terrible kicking, and the onfield reasons why Carlton don't want him.

He says Carlton will not be offering Dow a contract at the end of the year. He will become a delisted free agent and will likely end up at St Kilda.

I think Henry is good depth, and has the potential to improve a fair bit. If we were to trade him, I'd think a 3rd is fair or an upgrade from 3rd to low second 2nd (depends on where that pick is and no idea if we'd get that). Trust Walls and co to get someone decent around pick 42-50.

In relation to list management, the big advantage of a stacked, young list, is that we have the capacity to trade up. Why take 5 new players when you could go for 1 gun and 2 projects (I assume we need to take 3 players minimum?), and also to trade out for needs.

A similar segment could be done on Henry. Honest question, who would you prefer?

Dow is averaging 31.7 disposals, 4.6 tackles and 8.0 clearances in the VFL.

Also thought his kicking last night was far better than his teammates (Walsh in particular was horrendous)

I remember the the club was getting criticised by the main board for wanting more than pick 6 for a contracted Lachie Neale…

I am really struggling with recruiting Wagner when we all ready had Wilson and Worner playing basically the same role (and doing it better) it’s kind of the same with Emmitt when we have Sturt, if we lose either of Wilson, Wagner or Sturt simply because they are out of contract this year, I’d be pretty disappointed.

We 100% needed another small/medium forward.

Emmett was averaging two goals a game the second half of last year. If he was doing that everyone except Sam Sturt’s Fan Club would want Emmett in the side every week.

It wasn’t a bad selection at the time but he has started slowly.

President of the Sam Sturt fan club here

Sturt averaged 1.5 goals per game ly from 17 games

Emmett averaged 1.2 from 14 games

Agreed. Don’t see a lot of difference between Wagner and Wilson. Wagner getting higher possession numbers now. Wilson been playing well all year. I don’t mind him being kept on but we have a squeeze for list spots and he is out of contract. Was one of the last signed up last year. As it is likely that 1-2 of Sturt/Wagner/Wilson be delisted and added as rookie. Wagner being under contract will almost certainly survive. The other two depending what happens over the remainder of the year are in trouble one way or another.

Dow looked completely shot of confidence. Looks unsure of himself and clearly felt pressure of his situation. Carlton have handled him terribly.

Henry lacks no confidence. Watching him at Peel he fluffs some kicks but gets on with next job. He needs to eradicate the turnovers and make better decisions but Henry has been in the WAFL team of the week the past 2-3 games so is doing something right for those watch WAFL. Aside from a couple of howlers played well. Henry started the AFL year off well but then struggled. Not sure if he will get another chance but a far better player at moment than Dow.

Carlton really balls-up that draft. Bypassed LDU and Cerra. Then traded 6 and F3 for Cerra and if Dow is a DFA then effectively it has cost them:
Pick 3 (2017), Pick 8 (2021) and F3 for Cerra and they missed out on LDU. Silvani is a gift that keeps giving.

I reckon both Henry & Dow could both come good, but I think both are suffering from low confidence.

Was enjoying my weekened until I woke up to this

Be hard one to lose. Been a star from when we drafted him. Does Naughton even want to come to Perth. Not sure hes the best option. Wasnt he a Vic boy living here? Not a good trader but adding in pick 22 as well as Darcy looks excessive.

Heart and soul player, we'd be losing more than we gained there. Agree about Naughton being a bad fit here personality wise, he clearly enjoyed sticking it to us too much when we played. Eagles can have him.

WC can get both English and Naughton for absolutely nothing next season. One as a free agent and one as an uncontracted PSD pick as they finish last again.

If the Dogs are losing both of them next year THEY will be the ones trying to sell them this year and it won't cost anything close to Sean Darcy AND our early second for Naughton.

We don’t want Naughton.
Jumping into packs everywhere inside F50 aimlessly without any semblance of a structure between him and his fellow key forwards and constant momentum sapping set shot misses.
Amiss could be taking a routine mark i50 and Naughton would come flying over the top of him out of nowhere to try and take the grab.
Yeah it looks great and the comparisons of Naughton to Carey in the 90s are apt in terms of how he attacks the ball and takes pack marks but it was a pretty simple game back them and there was no such thing as zonal defending.
Naughton is just a see ball, get ball type that completely upsets the balance of our 3 talls that we have worked so hard to find. Add the fact that he’s completely unreliable and one of the worst set shots in the AFL - no thanks.
Back in Amiss Treacy and Jackson.
