Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I like the 2 years. We shouldn’t be putting our players out to pasture when they hit their 30’s.

Sonny has bled purple the entire time and should be rewarded for that. It sends a message to the youngsters that the club values loyalty too.

His leadership is vital to the group and on his day he still deserves his spot

Sturt and Henry probably have some trade value though. Unlike the rest.
Never mind the contracts ending in 2023, let's look at 2024 and ask the question on everyone's lips:

Bailey Banfield extension when?

Going to be controversial here, but I think Treacy has the ability to become nearly as good a mark as Naughton (albeit without the huge leap), but a superior set shot and, most importantly a foil for Jye due to his superior footy IQ. Kid is a crazy smart footballer (as is Amiss), and they make each other better. So much better than the Keystone cop routine we saw from Lobb and Tabs (and currently the Bullies).

In short, we already have the KPFs we need, no need to upset the team balance by throwing a massive contract at Naughts.

yes yes yes...yes!

Nice. The Fyfe and Walters deals are great for our playing group. Their tight and the elder statesmen of the team, the boys will be grinding for that GF spot..

I agree. With Fyfe and SonSon signing we have our elder mentors in the 22. It also allows us to make decent contract deals with the younger group. I’d expect more contracts to start dropping.

Thought that was common knowledge.

Interesting call on Sean Darcy and forget the media hype around him, I was told from a reliable source early this year that he was off at seasons end and Freo would be throwing the kitchen sink at Naughton.
Off as in asking for a trade?

Things change...it may have been true then.

We now have 4 significant wins on the trot and an increasingly powerful argument for not trying to fix what aint broke...

5 weeks ago it looked a bit broke?

Now it looks very very promising...to me, to JL, to Darcy, to lots of us.

We dont need Naughton, who seems to be valued as a singleton?.

We have Amiss, Jackson, Treacy and Darcy !

Ace, King, Queen and Jack...sort of?

Yeh don't know about a 2 year deal. 1 year absolutely but 2? He is currently out with a a calf injury and had time out at the start of the year with an Achilles.

Still a jet with ball in hand but is slowing down and starting to get the classic old man injuries.

We have 3 players over 30, that's not a problem for us as it stands

The troubling part is making the call to leave him out of the team if Sonny has been overtaken next year
I reckon Sonny knows the drill.
Ill bet that its been discussed and, he has accepted that , when hes not B22 thats it!
I see him now as a mature leader and believe that he is making the transition (along with Fyfe) to seeing team success as his legacy!
We are nothing like WCE!
The opposite in fact...
This is a healthy team on the rise!

Word is Fyfe and Sonny took minimum wages to help get Banners the 9x$1.5m he deserves.
Absolutely love to see it!

I'm completely against going after Naughton, I think it would be a huge mistake.

- We've had years of a dysfunctional forward line where our big key forward seemingly had no idea how to play well with others, resulting in a complete lack of synergy in the moving parts up forward. Years and years of it.

- We've also had years of not being able to convert all our hard work by not taking our chances at goal. Years and years of morale sapping inaccuracy. It's already cost us one premiership.

We've finally, after years and years and years, fixed both these issues with a great combination of young forwards who work brilliantly together and consistently finish off the chances their teammates create. Who are getting better with every game and can play together for the next decade. And we want to send ourselves back to the old days by spending an absolute fortune on a messiah player whose two biggest weakness are the same issues that have held our forward line back for years and years? Absolute madness.
We don't have to go that far back for when we last spent a fortune on a Messiah player. And he comes with forward credentials.

The thing with Messiahs is you have to get the list timing right, and you need to be sure you're not simply buying a very naughty boy. In the past I don't think we have ever got both of those right, and often have got them both wrong.

Jackson looking like a list management masterstroke.

Yeah not crash hot on giving either of them 2 years at their age, regardless of money. I'm pretty sure Mundy's last multi year deal came before he was 30.
