Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

You can’t delist players in the middle of the draft. Besides we need Reidy next year - he should’ve played instead of Corbett this year.
The fact that we didn't play him when we had the chance does tell a story, he was brought in as the mature cover, do we really need mature cover if we are only gonna play them when both our rucks are out? I'd rather run with no main ruck like Pies did this year and Port did last year

Whats the likelihood of losing Darcy and Jackson at the same time for an extended period?

There is up to three wing spots in a team and none of them have anyone locked in as at round 1 next year (or even this year really given how Henry started). We had a genuinely good wing we could keep on reasonable wages. The club deserves criticism for this
I think the solution is to release Young and Johnson on the outside more. They have beautiful kicks and we lose that when they have to play as big bodied mids.

In terms of wingers our options aren't that great next year:
  • Noddy needs to get his shit together because he has been woeful, I have doubts he will make it
  • Stanley can be anything but he needs to build fitness and experience
  • Williams is exciting but still very raw and is not guaranteed to make it

Reidy actually sees himself as a Forward/Ruck more than a pure Ruck, which is why it was so disappointing we didn’t play him in that role when Darcy went down. Instead we rotated Treacy into forward/ruck and played Corbett as an undersized KPF, leaving Amiss to play a lone hand up front when Jackson was in the bench and Treacy in the ruck.
IMHO we win the Brisbane game and push port all the way if Treacy was a permanent forward.

Then where is JOM in that? He’s contracted until 2025. Clearly in the window on that context.

It was poor list management that required all variables to be perfectly ticked off. Not one did.

It required:
Henry to develop and sign on.
NOD to be fit and go the next level
One of Aish, Hughes to fill the back up spot.

Didn’t happen.
The part that’s bemusing is Henry wanted out last year, said no and wanted him to develop and hoped would sign on.
I will admit I’m not convinced about JOM recruiting. Yes he was cheap and we are very young side, and I think the idea was that he’s a mundy replacement (has a lot more leadership qualities than acres for example, and plays mid/fwd).

at the end of last year Henry was worth nothing. He had literally zero exposed form and I reckon we would have almost had to pay someone to take him, and then - why would they when he’d shown nothing? People are rewriting history when they claim we made a mistake not trading him last year.

it was reasonable for the club to hope / expect that between NOD, Henry, Aish, Chapman, Hughes and even Ras (and Brayshaw if really needed) we had enough options to develop or cover on the wing.

and I was always a fan of acres, his 2 way running and efforts in defence were always underrated on the site.

Everyone talking about Acres because its topical

Our big stuffup last year was bringing in JOM

JOM cost us bringing in Sharp for the Acres role

JOM pushed Brodie out of the midfield

JOM was average all year bar maybe 5 games

JOM is going to be top 10 paid players for us next season (And i seriously hope it drops off in years 3/4 or we are boned)

JOM got settled in the leadership group and was a new trade in so we are too scared to drop him

If he is best 22 next year then we are ****ed, we have to force him out of the midfield but he is too slow for wing, too slow and short for defense and we have better forward options
JOM didn’t really cost us Sharp. I understand what you’re saying that we focused on JOM trade at the end.

Fact is GCS cost us trading in Sharp. They would not budge on F2. We offered F3. This went on for the entirety of the trade period we were still open to the trade on the last day. With only hours to go Freo gave up on GC and Sharp and focused on Meek and subsequently JOM who only popped up as an option late. We actually tried to trade Corbett and Sharp in together but due to breakdown in relation to GC expectations on trade value. Freo cut that off early and just did the trade for Corbett alone for a F4.

Also Brodie only has himself to blame for getting dropped. He played poorly this year and then had injury troubles. I’m unsure about JOM salary but I know Hawks paid a fair portion this year. Really doubt that he will be significant salary cap space 2024/25.

I saw JOM as more of a Mundy replacement. Mundy and Brodie whilst both not being particularly quick played together ok in 2022. I’d expect much better involvement and positioning from JOM in 2024. I’d like to see JOM play a bit more high hf - he takes a good mark and his i50 kicks were good.

Agree with that but also add that Frederick should be added into the mix and yes Johnson should be our congested side wing from round 1 next year.
If we do get Sharp, we have him plus those mentioned above contesting for the other two roles.

I think people are overhyping Sharp tbh. People are blaming Dew but he literally couldn't break into a shit GC side. His vfl stats are consistent but nothing spectacular either.

Again, maintain that JOM was a panic/back up buy and hope he would plug into Mundy’s role and not lose that structure.

Brodie should get his spot back after a strong pre season, and Eramus builds his tank. There’s no way JOM is B22 2024 and beyond. Yet he has another 3 years on his contract.

Agree again, but he has 4 years in the system and offers some immediate relief/competition/depth, Stanley is the one who I think has the highest ceiling of the lot, but probably needs a couple of preseasons to build tank and belief.
Johnson and Sharp is a adequate starting pair for next year.

Is Sharp playing well at VFL similar to blokes like HBrayshaw and Schloithe winning Sandovers? What makes people confident Sharp can be a useful AFL player instead of a failed one?
He's a free hit essentially, he either comes on or gets delisted. Happy to give him a go but I keeping my expectations moderate. At least it creates more competition for spots.

The fact that, at least on the numbers, Sharp was decent at AFL level as a pure winger in his 2nd season (2021). Idk if he's gotten better since then, but I doubt he's gotten worse.

Also for what it's worth, Gold Coast fans on bigfooty talk about him more as a decent player with potential who's checked out of the club than a bum.

GC list manager directly said that we stopped talking to them once the JOM trade came up

I have faith we would have got a deal done if we had stayed in contact

Meh, if they were asking for a future 2nd in any way then they were being ridiculous and I have no problem that trade not getting done

I agree but Reidy plays one good one followed by a rotter. He needs a good preseason. He is also just learning to follow up at ground level

They fact they haven't played him all year tells me they would have bent on the trade
Maybe, GC could have gotten the trade done easily just taking a future 3rd at any point I'd imagine. It's not like that should have been hard. The fact they couldnt agree to that over a simple call suggests they were prepared to be obstinate on this one.

We can delist Reidy and the either Re-rookie him after the draft or not, if edwards falls to 41.
Reidy is still OOC as far as I know, haven’t heard anything yet about him being here next year?

On top of this im not sure what our plan was if JOM didn't become an option late in trade week.

We seemed to go from retiring mundy, lowballing acres, to create options for Johnson, Erasmus, etc. Then JOM came up, Erasmus and Johnson were deemed not ready by R1.

If Edward falls to 41 than would he be any good?

I've seen one article suggesting he was quietly given a second year but it hasn't been confirmed anywhere of note and I can no longer find the article

It was something listing our OOC players and he and Stanley weren't on it (before stanley was announced)
