Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

My God has the Hogan trade been our worst ever? Even Trent Croad showed more than Hogan when he was at Freo

I don't remember Adelaide getting crucified when Stengle went on to kick 4 in the grand final?? And he was the exact same situation as Hogan except instead of trading him for a pick in the 50s they just delisted him.

We traded pick 5 for hogan then gave him away for nothing, now he kicked 40 goals.

It is an easy story to write.

The only question mark I’ve the hogan debacle is was he pushed out too soon? I don’t know really. It felt to me from the outside JL placed him in the “too hard” basket and his fate was sealed from there.
Did we push him out or did he come to us and request a trade?
Easy to forget it was Ross Lyon that brought hogan in, JL inherited him.

Whatever happened, the trade is easily our worst of all time (we got McPharlin out of the croad trade) and also probably in the top 10 worst AFL trades of all time.

Was there a trigger that he would’ve reached that would’ve meant he was going to get a massive pay rise/extension? I remember hearing something like that at the time. That to me sounds more realistic than pushing him out because he would be a bad influence amongst the group.

The article doesn't actually place any blame on us for either being moved on. He mentions Hogan being hounded by media and that the trade was a last chance, and he then just talks up how Acres found a way to become a matchwinner for Carlton.

That's way to balanced for here.

TBF the story is that both Acres AND Hogan played vital roles in their teams' victories and that both teams were mediocre mid-season. The emphasis is that both Hogan and Acres are journeymen, not that Freo missed a trick. The parallels are story-worthy in their own right, this is not a crack at Freo.

Unfortunately for Freo both Hogan and Acres were a stuff-up that we must wear. The Hogan debacle in particular cost us immensely. If we fall short of a decent premiership tilt it will be looked upon as a key contributing factor. Perhaps we were all unlucky, if he didn't have his persistent navicular injury perhaps he could have got on top of his mental demons while he was here. We will never know. Anyhow, we backed ourselves in to make the right environment for an injured/troubled player and we failed.

We pushed him out. (From One Giant leap: Enigma Hogan reveals whirlwind of leaving Freo)

“The fact that I finished [2020] with a good body, and mentally and physically I’m in a good position, it would’ve been nice to potentially give it a full year alongside Tabs and Lobby but it hasn’t transpired and I think this is the best move for all parties."

Freo clearly believed in 2020 that they needed to make a statement that professionalism, hard work and just having your shit together off field in general beats talent. The Hogan move was just 1 example: delisted McCarthy, Matera, Dixon and a few of the NGA guys that all had their issues. I feel like I remember us being interested in trading out Blakely around that time too. Kinda fits that first year where we apparently did stuff like getting motivational speakers and doing a bunch of "culture setting" stuff. Seems simplistic to say, but assessment of that strategy will hinge on whether we win (or at bare minimum come very close to) a flag in the next like 5 years.

Re whether it was our worst trade, I say no purely because it really only looks terrible in hindsight (looked iffy at the time, but nowhere near as bad). I don't think you'll find a team more determined to shoot themselves in the foot while creating premiership dynasties for other teams than Freo in their first 10 years, after which we gradually learned that top 10 picks are worth a damn.

Yes a very important point you make. All well and good to say it’s great to get rid of all the problematic types, but results have got to improve on the back of that.
I reckon if JL had taken over Fremantle in 2011, Michael Walters would have spent the last decade playing footy for a Melbourne based club.
His strategy to get rid of troublemakers is a perfectly valid path to take.
We shall see if the strategy works for him over the next year or two.

True, he doesn’t. But it won’t take long for Freo to be blamed. And so they should, I remember Bell was reluctant to get Hogan, but Acres is definitely his stuff up. It’s still horrific list mgt

I wouldn't mind Elijah Scoble from Perth FC. Key defender. Seems to have good closing speed. Around 195 quite solidly built. Kept Cocking quiet today in the colts final. Wonder where he is rated in the scheme of things. McArdle has him as one of the best from WA for this draft.
Neve heard of him but with a name like that he is now a “must have”.😜

Not enough "Hogan was a ****wit I ****ing hate him" for this board.

Yes. He was going to move up to a million a season

Hogan comes in for first round pick, leaves for a fourth rounder if that.
Acres leaves for a FUTURE third rounder.

That’s where Fremantle should get blamed.

Back in the wrong players, pay the consequences.

Henry is a clear example. God can’t wait for GF to be over and trade week comes, so he can go.
