Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I get the same with people wanting to trade Darcy. We can't keep trading top 10 talent at the club that we spent years developing just because the opportunity comes up. I don't care who we can get in return.
I agree. If we want to be contending sooner rather than later we should be keeping Darcy at all costs. From what it has seemed too both Cox and Darcy have always seemed pretty rusted on to the Freo culture too so it's weird that there's talks of them moving on. Crows ITK types on here too have had a pretty poor record as well going back to perennially being a sure thing for Pav whenever he was out of contract.

But f***, if we lost Cox then honestly we'd be limping into a window so seriously under-talented in key areas. It might nearly be better to trade hard, further delay gratification and attempt to go again when Serong, Brayshaw and Amiss are at their peaks. But maybe that's just the beaten down pessimist I've both always been and yet have become.

Is anyone confident with this current team mgt?
I reckon there are easily 8 mgt structures better than us in the AFL now.
I don't rate Longmuir, Bell is hit and miss, The ex Prez is a good builder, don't know about the new bloke.
Garlick and Walls are the diamonds, and we could lose Garlick to the Toast!
I'm confident most of us have no idea whether it's an effective management structure, nor who most of them are except for the few public facing positions.

Either The West is fishing / full of crap, or others in the industry think Garlick isn't going so badly.

Earlier it was said, Don Pyke almost certain to be Eagles CEO. If Garlick go there, we may poach Don ? Or promote Bell and bring Don to Bell's position?

I very much hope to hear soon that Hamling has signed a new 2 year contract. I actually don't understand why we haven't re-signed him yet. He's very much a required player in my eyes.

Clubs are coming for him, or so the rumour mill says. I'm going to scream if we lose more quality experience by trying to penny pinch of offer 1 year deals when some of the dross who will never play consistently at AFL level have been given 2 year deals.

"Port Adelaide's Tom Clurey is open to a trade despite having two years to run on his contract, while Adelaide youngster James Borlase is yet to receive a deal from the Crows and has attracted rival interest. The Crows are looking at Gold Coast tall Chris Burgess in a trade, potentially to play key defence, while Fremantle free agent Joel Hamling is also of interest to clubs seeking key backs."

Joel Hamling has played six games in three years and is 30 years old. He’s worth a one year and no more than that.

Not overly convinced we need Hamling next year tbh. Of course he’s a pretty solid player still and we’d want to have him on the list but it isn’t a complete disaster if he plays elsewhere imo.

We’d probably want to see Davies at AFL a level for a few games next year ideally anyway - the problem would be if he’s forced to play every single week.

Would be pretty poor form by Garlick if he jumped ship now, especially after his speech at the Doig rallying us that we would become a super power.

Just a few thoughts on trade type tidbits bandied about on here:
  • In the Sharp haggling we were willing to give up our F2, but GCS held far too long on the demand for North's F2 that we held. You snooze you lose. Our good fortune I'd say. Sharp looks miles away from any forecast ceiling. His trade value has plummeted.
  • We had our eye on O'Meara for a very long time. We swooped when GWS made a play for him. Not uncommon for new players to take a while to fully settle. Far from failed trade status at the moment.
  • Bit of recency effect with Acres. His year has had extensive periods of ordinary form. Maybe he's been swept up in Carltoon's momentum. Shades of frontrunner tones.

Sharp still could be good.
Omeara has been very disappointing.
And Acres was clearly best 22, and they stuffed up letting him go
JOM is the most disappointing for mine. The fact they pushed Brodie out to fit him in is the most beguiling thing of the whole situation.
I would seriously consider shipping JOM off to GWS if they are still interested, Young and Johnson have already surpassed him and he has 3 years left to wallow at Peel or keep Brodie/Erasmus out of the first 22.

I'm telling you
The guy at St kilda to consider is Coffield, not Gresham
Moneyball type imo

I agree completely. So much so I've previously been to the StKilda trading thread and enquired about Coffield. He wouldn't cost much in trade as he's been injured a lot in the last two years so we would still get a draft pick for Henry and be able to get Coffield in the same trade. According to StKilda supporters he wants a two year deal and was offered a 1 year deal so he would be open to a trade. according to them. Coffield has star potential despite the injuries. I'd rather take a punt on him and have a draft pick to potentially add elite talent then keep Henry to be honest as I don't think Henry's short kicking game is what we need on a wing.

Losing Cox would be just ****ed.
People thinking this would be anyway positive are deluded.
Apparently freo are many years from competing (feeder club?) while the Hawks who are younger than us are aggressively in the market for prime 26 year old big money players like McKay and Ratugolea.
I swear some people on here have some perverse liking for that fact that we are perennially one of the youngest teams in the comp.
Hawthorn aren't getting either of those players

At the end of the day Bell/JL wanted him and his salary gone. Whilst Bell was in the current role when Hogan was traded the main responsible party seeing Hogan join Freo was Rosich.
Everything Bell did in regard to Acres was because he thought we had Angus Brayshaw coming to Freo and that's why we made a lowball offer to Acres. There have been quite a few reports on the Melbourne board saying that Angus recieved a much longer deal then they had expected because there was a very real chance he was coming to Freo so Melbounre upped their offer.

Sounds like Essendon (cough Brad Scott cough) could be cooking up some dodgy deal that will be allowed for the first time (incredibly between two Vic clubs) for Gresham to get over paid (better compo) and Shiels to move as a result. Could be good for us and Henry...

Angus signed on in July, there was plenty of chance to pivot

We didn't see Acres in our plan, can't blame anything else

adjective
charming or enchanting, often in a deceptive way.
"a beguiling mixture of English, French, and Italian"

So if you replace the word beguiling with charming in the sentences:

"JOM is the most disappointing for mine. The fact they pushed Brodie out to fit him in is the most charming thing of the whole situation."

The two sentences seem to be saying two contradictory things (the first negative, the second positive if tainted with some faint deception) about how you feel about the situation, or at the very least they are two unlikely bedfellows for adjectives being applied to the one situation being described.

It is like the following prose:

"The fire in her chest burnt anew. It froze her heart diamond hard, dulling the slightest murmuring as he strode into her room."

It is fun but it is also non-sensical.

Shiels?

I really wonder if it's as simple as the higher-ups being enamoured with him when he was a junior, similar to Bennell and Hogan.
