I am not convinced going after Darcy is going to get us to the next level, if TDK elects to leave, l would much rather take the extra draft picks and get a few picks in the top 10-15 in this draft and take the longer term view.

Fremantle now have Jackson & Darcy and are in worst shape than last season.
I agree … I watched him last night … he would have to be the slowest player I have seen in a very very long time …

Pretty keen to see if Brad Close would like to move on from the Cats to the Blues. Think he would add a lot to our forward line.

Also I like Ash Johnson even though he is currently at the filth. End of his 3rd year as a rookie so you just never know.
Good call on both fronts. I like that Brad Close.

Really hope we target some dynamic small - mid sized forwards with x factor. Watching Brisbane with the likes of Cameron, McCarthy and Rayner are the kind of dangerous players we need.

Agreed that Durdin and Motlop look promising but no where near that kind of quality yet.

Brad Close would be a very good get, incredibly smart player and imo just as important as Stengle in Geelongs fwd mix.
Johnson, not as keen on but wouldn't say no if he came.

Let me introduce you to...

current player contracts from footywire..not sure how accurate (i think tdk is contracted til end of 24 - after he signed a 2 year deal?)

Looking at end of 2023, i think we should be looking to delist/trade or retire (Edcurnow) the following in bold....

(edit: am a bit unsure on Guv...mind says trade but heart says keep)

On whether we keep Gov, whilst there is no doubt he has talent if we renew him at the end of the year it has to be on our terms as he has had his payday and delivered very little - one year incentive based contract - if he thinks he can get better then we should be prepared to let him walk and go hard for a free agent/out of contract third defender like Doedee or get someone like Phillips or McMahon from the VFL.

Also if we keep him then that has to be the end of Marchbank. You cannot have 2 injury prone players in the same spot. It’s why Plowman continues to get picked because he is last man standing. We have the same problem at high half forward where Fisher is basically undroppable whilst all of Martin, Cuningham and Philp are out injured. Again we should target someone out of contract like Schultz or get a small forward from the VFL.

Of the other players on the list coming out of contract I pretty much agree with those you’ve said will likely be delisted and I’d add Fogarty and Plowman to those who should be delisted. Both are just not good enough to play league. We’ve seen enough of Fog and Plowman so I’d rather give those spots to a couple blokes from the lower leagues who can play the roles Fog and Plowman occupy.

Tend to agree, although is only recently that the athletic ruck has become a thing, prob hasn’t been a good one since Adam Goodes. However when our midfield is firing we are clearance strong, to do that we need first possession and a ruck that can feed our mids is critical.. prob the annoying thing is this has been an obvious flaw in our list for min 3 years yet we have done sfa about it.

if TDK leaves it frees up about $500k we would have spent on him, lose Dow and Jack Martin, Fogarty, Plowman & March and then offering $800k to Darcy seems viable.
I'm not sure that's entirely true. The athlete ruckman isn't all that new. Remember Hampson? Stanley was before injuries turned him into whay he is now, Zac Smith for the sun's. Even Kreuzer before his knee and other injuries was seen as an athletic extra midfielder type ruck who turned into the tractor.

The search for the unicorn ruckman has been ongoing for a while.

Tbh I'm not sold on Young as a long term KPD yet. He doesn't like physicality and forwards who do give him trouble. He's a finesse defender at this point, his intercepting and reading of the play is good but his contested play needs a fair bit of work imo.

I'd take McKay over Young for sure, there was a period last yr where McKay was one of the better key defenders in the league. I don't think Young has ever got close

Think we realise that, finally. O’Keeffe a good solid, no frills investment. Very young, so three years away at least.

l don't believe that is accurate at all.
Young has been very solid in the past 12 months, there is no player that does not have some off games, some here tend to highlight those and omit all the positive games.

Mckay is injury ridden, we already have a list with 4-6 of those, why get another one.

That opinion on Young isnt based off a handful of games this year, I've thought it for a while now. He clearly isn't overly physical and can be beaten that way consistently.

McKay has been injury prone, but in the 22 games he played the season before and the first 8 he played last season he was one of the better KPDs in the league imo.

I am hesitant to take on another injury prone player though, part of me think we can fix it based on how we fixed Harry, though, maybe I'm being distracted by the fact they're brothers in that case. In my mind the familiarity makes him more likely to be fixed by us but maybe that's a fallacy.

Spiteful? Come on....How many games has he actually played throughout the exuberant contact he has with us?
A he's not on his own either.
Alastair Clarkson, Damian Hardwick both went overseas in previous off seasons to ‘better themselves’ AND at their own expense…

I don’t necessarily agree that Jack should be paying for something like this but he needs to take ownership in his problems and work harder than anyone to find a solution. After all he’s being paid a sh*tload…

Weits makes him much better than he would otherwise be. He's an oversized intercept defender playing a more accountable role being extremely well directed and supported by the general.

Ol frying pan hands Hampson, best thing he brought to the club was Megan Gale

Hence we get a v highly touted key position no 6 draft pick for only a handful of pick swaps and salary dumps 2 yrs into his career because of injury concerns from GWS. (That right there is a significant red flag)

I agree with your post but I think you are underselling the amount we gave up in that trade. I’m not sure how other view it, but I see pick 16 for Marchy and then the rest is for Pickett, when you look at this trade at the Tuohy trade, theyre both terrible, add trading a 2nd round pick for a 3rd and two 4s and it gets worse.

We gave up Geelongs F1 (15) pick 45 and pick 58

Received Marchbank, Pickett and GWS F2 (35)

In regards to Gov, even if you were to get a 3rd round pick, we don’t have anyone to replace him, Marchbank will be delisted, Durdin is far down the pecking order and then there’s Kemp whos in his 4th year and doesn’t get picked.

I would hope that Govs lack of durability will mean he won’t have many suitors and his contract value will be quite low, if Kemp can go past him and cement his spot, great, then having Gov and Durdin in reserve puts us in a good spot.
