Position 2023 Midfielders

Seemed a bit out of sorts, looked tired, played out on the wing for quarters. Seemed to spend more time on the bench than before but he’s usually pretty high time on ground.
Interesting, do you have faith in him bouncing back this season or are you not picking him?

Personally no but who knows with Bevo. There’s been no sign in preseason he’ll be on the wing. The only reason he might pushed out is that him, Bont and Libba aren’t the most explosive mids going around.
Was it not a bit of trying to give Dunkley more mid time too? To get him to stay? And Macrae was the one moved out to accommodate?

Well this is enough to scratch Clarry out of my team for good. So the Clarry at HB meme might be true

I'll still believe it when I see it. Goodwin's a bit nuts sometimes, but playing the best centre square mid in the comp (who's hardly a precise kick of the ball) at a seagull HB position for any extended period of time would be madness. Anyway, I'll accept the hesitancy now instead of openly shutting it down. Still think it lasts about five minutes.

Goodwin seems like a stubborn bastard tbh. Hopefully he sticks with it long enough to drop Olivers price a bit and changes it back the minute I trade him in.

Agreed from a SuperCoach perspective (if I end up not starting him).

From a Melbourne supporter perspective, I absolutely hate it. Who gives a shit whether James Harmes and Tom Sparrow get midfield minutes. Hell, take Jack Viney's if you need to take someone's.

Anyway, when Bont, Macrae and Libba win five clearances in a row against Harmes, Sparrow and Neal-Bullen, I'm sure that'll be the last of it we see.

It smells like following the Cats and building into the season - giving more exposure others and rest to key players

Agreed. Same rule applies in lots of sports - play your best players in their best positions.

Some coaches know better though I guess.

At least with some of those Cats mids, they can effectively play other positions (i.e. Danger forward). That's just not Oliver's shtick.

Also, he's 25 years old, which makes him at least 30 years younger than most of Geelong's midfield. He'll be right

A week out from round 1, what are everyone's pro's and cons of the top 5 priced mids?

Laird - ultra premo, overpriced so more than likely going to drop. Will be a top top scorer and has shown he can it even in crap teams.

Clarry - The new 'must have' who has been my No.1 up until the last 36 hours. Talk he may drop his CBA numbers but I doubt this. Should average seriously good numbers again.

Neale - This is a hard one, with the arrival of Dunkley, the acquisitions of Ashcroft and even Gunston will pad out the Lions numbers, Neale could return to his ultra primo best. Im not 100% convinced but can see the attraction

Miller - Took is the main man in a crap side who will be asked to do the bulk of the work again. Heard the pre season hasn't gone smoothly so may steer clear and be a possible upgrade target in first half of the season.

Mills - Surprised he is the 4th highest priced mid available. Im steering clear but if people can provide info on why he is being considered so highly, would be appreciated.

Bontempelli - I would have had Bont in the top 5 priced players but reaching him at number 6. He is currently my No.2 midfielder and expect him to be a Brownlow smokey with the departure of Dunkley asked to do more of the hard stuff inside.

For the next 7 - 20, I like the idea of Zac Merret as new Bombers skipper, think he could dispel those first half of the season number facts. Brayshaw (Freo) who shone last year and expect him to be a SC mainstay for years to come after truly breaking out last year. Jack Steele is very much in the Touk Miller class of needing to do the bulk of the work for his team and Sam Walsh has shown he will be a SC stud even at such a young age but the lack of pre season work is worrying me off at this stage.

Current Midfield is;

(M1) Oliver (M2) Bontempelli (M3) Andy Brayshaw (M4) T.Green (M5) Callaghan (M6) Ashcroft (M7) McKenzie (M8) W.Phillips (M9 - 12 rookie place holders)

M1 - Laird vs Oliver has been troubling me for a while.

In the end, I went with Laird as he has less queries than Oliver atm

But, I’m on the get Oliver in my team asap project

.........

It's splitting hairs but at that price it's small margins anyway. Essendon at AO in round 5 is frightening though. He could score 250.

What makes you think that? His scores have been pretty standard against Essendon. No history to suggest he'll go nuts against them

Am I crazy for fading Oliver and laird.
Macrae and Steele allows me to have 12 premos rather than 11.
What are everyone’s thoughts on the likelihood of those 2 getting back to 120+ averages

I'm torn Bont or macrae
Ownership % says Bont over Macrae .....I've gone Macrae due to historical scoring trends PLUS ....I believe if anyone will be tagged at the WB, it'll be Bont

Historically if Bont is the man, I don't think it'll be a decision that will derail your season

I think so, reckon you should have at least one of them as a safe C option.

Steele and Macrae to me still have some ? on them, although from my perspective it's a lot of group think and Macrae at the very least should be hitting 120+ with Steele at least very close.

Think I'll pull the trigger on Bont - thinking he mightn't play as forward as much this year

Big reason I'm going Bont over Macrae is with Dunkley gone, Bont needs to be 'that' guy. Thing he could be every bit as good as Clarry/Laird

Against Adelaide, yeah?
Yes, Adelaide and Port usually play there but this year Melbourne are playing Essendon there during Gather Round.

And Essendon look like being a bit shit this season, so Piggy is a good chance to feast.

Pretty obvious really, but happy to walk you through it :thumbsu:
