And so where does this leave “The Behemoth” (otherwise known as HFC) and their community development hub in Greater Dandenong West?

“At the start of the year we weren’t expected to make finals so I don’t think we exceeded expectations all year but we should have really capitalised on where we were.”

more of the same bullshit coming out of the club. hopefully ross comes in and changes this and starts setting an expectation and holding them to it. we've been setting them then completely reneging on it in 6-12 months time.

He, as in Jack Steele, who is a person and not an organisation (I can totally see how you were confused though as he IS built) was talking about outward perception and he was 100% right that everyone had already written us off as missing finals. Hope this helps.

rofl what

jack steele is the captain of the footy club and like it or not is the face of the playing group and a spokes person. is that where are at now? you could reduce literally every statement anyone at the club has made to "but he is just a person", but what's the point of that other than to try and deflect away from results.

outside perception of where we are at means very little. the president of the footy club writing off the results of 2021 and pushing the expectation to 2022 means something. something that jack should be aware of. outside perception shouldn't be used as a reason to minimise the results of 2022.

we have a huge issue with adjusting expectation as soon as it hasn't been met. something that was highlighted in the review (the need to hold those inside the club to account). the president's 180 degree shifts in how we were going every 6 months was a good example of this.

if there's one thing we need to address is to make sure we stay on a longer term path and stop waxing and waning in the assessment then readjusting the target.

You have completely misinterpreted what he said. Like utterly and completely. He was literally saying that we didnt exceed any outsider's expectations but from that position they were in should absolutely have made it.

Like, youre literally running with some line of thinking that's completely baseless and adjusting what others have said to support it. Many many people inside the club have stated the intention was to make finals. Ratten was sacked because we didnt ffs. Come back and live in the real world with the rest of us please.

Context.

I’m pretty sure the statement was reflecting the media’s opinion.

He is being interviewed by a journalist. Not club media.

It's obvious he's talking external expectations NOT internal expectations.

He was but I read it thinking we need a new sport psych and new leaders. The club is very low in ambition or expectation. At least we seem to have worked it out now. That’s exactly why we have Lyon back. Trying to regain that ruthlessness that we had under him.

Agreed with this assessment. Really showed in the second half of the year when we were so mentally weak and nothing from the coaching group turned it around.
Lay the blame squarely at the coaches feet and the reason Ratten was sacked in my opinion.
Low ambition and low expectation recognised by Basset and the review, recognised by Geoff Walsh ( irrelevant comment), recognised by Lyon (irrelevant and disrespected).
Steele is looking back to the season just gone and reflecting. He is correct, low expectations outside the club, @ 8-3, even with the tough draw we should have made finals. The fact we didn't and fell away so badly signals a psychological problem.

Well it has been recognised and attempts to fix this issue have been wholesale, let's see if it can work.

I remember watching Steele do an interview just after the bye on a Sunday footy show. He spoke about our hard draw and that we had to play Brisbane twice, and someone else twice. You could see he wasn't confident and didn't believe we could do it.

Sydney was the other side?
Just couldn't think of it
Trying to block the Sydney game from my memory as i went up there for that game
That interview just just stuck with me, he seemed more worried than excited about the opportunity

After the Brisbane game i gave up on the year. We'd had a bye. They hadn't, and were on a 6 day break coming back from WA. And they over ran us like it was the other way around.

So many guys that we could get a LOT more from (not including the very youngest), who would make us a much better team:

Marshall
Gresham
King
Jones
Hill
Clark
Higgins
Billings
Coffield
Butler

That’s 10 right there, including 7 who were drafted in the first round of their respective drafts. While the other 3 have all had top 2 finishes in B&F’s, but haven’t played consistently well for at least the last two years.

There’s no shortage of talent there.

We might not have enough of that absolutely elite talent that other teams have, but there’s more than enough of the rest. We just need to extract the best from them on a more consistent basis.

Makes no difference what round they were drafted.
Sinclair and Marshall were rookies and they are probably better than the rest of them.

Imagine a club captain who doesn't believe his team have what it takes. He's captain because he's one of the club's best performers, most professional players. He looks over the set up, his players, his coaches and the team form and says "yeah nah"

Tells you everything about the coaching set up he had, regardless of what he says in interviews. The coaching set up whose job it had been for 3 years to develop a game style, to tune the players, to get everyone working as a unit. Of course, it's undoubtedly true the players couldn't love Ratts any harder - but how many were really buying what he was selling?

I talked multiple times this year about those videos of pre-game mid-game and post-game coaches talks - my assessment of player body language was that they were largely tuned out. Somewhere along the line, Ratts got too focused on motivational speak, but it seems like the nuts and bolts of how each player or the team was to become better were missing.

That's a shoddy, half-arsed grift as a teacher, when you don't have the energy to do the real work, which is using your experience and supposed technical knowledge to guide the student. Difficult to do in groups and sometimes students just don’t get it - of course, but that's the job.

For what it's worth it's probably easier to do that when you're an assistant and you don't have the other issues the head coach deals with on your plate. Perhaps he would have been a perfect assistant, but this playing group are a soft group that need a harder leader.

Steele probably noticed early doors that that was the case. I wonder how his leadership style will change under Ross. I would personally choose a different captain or have co-captains, I remain skeptical about Steele's ability to truly lead a group but at least he's got a template to follow and to guide him next to him again in Lenny Hayes. It'll be a fascinating evolution.

I have remarked before about Steele and Clark being the modern day Hayes and Harvey (yes Harvs was a lot more professional regarding his body) so I'm really looking forward to see the influence the assistants can have on their protèges.

It strikes me as a bit odd that Steele did not even have an inkling that Ratts was in trouble until Ratten broke the news to him himself.

Surely the captain would’ve been interviewed at least a couple of times during the review and surely those interviews would have squarely sought his views on the coach and his suitability.
