Here is my 2023 version of my 2022 thread.

I'm putting this up as a resource to track changes ahead of the 2023 season.

As retirements, delistings, trades and drafts happen I will update this

I am sure I have made some mistakes. Please let me know if you spot some.

Here is a breakdown of the squad, categorised by both position and age group. This obviously required some judgement calls, ie Winder as 'General Forward' not 'Midfielder', Petrevski-Seton the same, and Waterman KPP Forward, not General Forward.

I have left out Joyce and Trew as I left them out above, and they are pretty obvious delistings.

Underneath is a breakdown of the games we have given all players this season, with the colour signifying their age group. I have added whether they were a used or an used sub as well.

That 21 to 26 age bracket is pretty manky innit.

Duffield mentioned on the game that WCE's strategy is to retain the older greats whilst cutting the dead mid aged list cloggers (the foley's, langdon's and PETRUCCELLES' on the list).

Will see how this unfolds but i predict bottom 2 finishes for years to come with this strategy.

The way I see it is we have way too many players on the list that are easy best 30 in many afl squads, but not best 10 in any.

In that 21 to 26 bracket, how many players would have other supporters saying 'man, I wish we had him on our list!'?

Allen and... Ryan?

Rotham and Nelson.

Tis ok.

Just trying to pump up their trade value.

Actually some surprising ages in there.
  • Winder so young, feels premature if we cut him. Especially with the numbers he's started producing in the WAFL.
  • Allen 24 by the time he plays his next game. Really needs to start hitting his potential, which we've seen glimpses of but largely still getting by on potential moreso than actual performances.
  • Age distribution actually not as dire as you expect once the 30+ get taken out of the equation.

I 100% agree it is the strategy we'll be pursuing, but I daresay cutting all the oldies and running with the deadwood in the 21-26 age group instead would be even worse.

OP has been updated. I still haven't bothered to put Trew back on, but who knows, with Redden's surprise retirement, maybe he survives.
Also, it seems to be very likely Hunt is added to our squad, but I will wait on the official announcement.

Can you make Rookie listed players a different colour.

From a practical pov, there’s no real distinction between main listed and rookie listed players anymore. The restrictions on rookies being selected to play that used to be in place are long gone

The only real difference now is that up to a maximum value of about $70k per rookie, their wages aren’t included in the salary cap

When you're looking to see how many picks we need to take in the draft it would certainly give a clear distinction, but hey it's your baby.

OP is updated with the recruitment of Hunt.

The second post has also been updated to show the position and age spread. Still got a lot of gen defenders in the 24-26 age range, besides Duggan and maybe Cole, none of them are 'established'.

The other big distinction is that a newly recruited rookie can just be given a 1 year contract rather than 2 (apart from the MSD). Which makes a big difference in regards to recruitment.

OP Updated with Langdon's delisting and pick swaps.

If Trew is delisted, or moved to the rookie list, and there are no other changes, that leaves four spots free for the four picks in the draft.

OP updated with Winder and Trew's delisting. They may be rookie listed.

If Hurn re-signs for another year, we will have 5 main list spots and 4 rookie spots free.

I assume you’re taking cat B rookies into account with 4 rookie spots?

There’s only 2 regular rookie spots available if you aren’t
