2023 Teams of the Year

Bored, finished work and everything, so going to do my "teams of the year" now because there are only two tests and two ODI's left in the year and I can't see that changing the teams at all.

Test:

Usman Khawaja (12 tests, 1168 runs, average 55.61, 3x 100, 6x 50)
Dimuth Karunaratne (6 tests, 608 runs, average 60.8, 2x 100, 3x 50, c)
Kane Williamson (7 tests, 695 runs, average 57.91, 4x 100, 0x 50)
Joe Root (8 tests, 787 runs, average 65.58, 2x 100, 3x 50)
Kusal Mendis (6 matches, 586 runs, average 58.6, 2x 100, 2x 50)
Virat Kohli (7 matches, 557 runs, average 55.7, 2x 100, 1x 50)
Lorcan Tucker (4 matches, 351 runs, average 43.87, 1x 100, 1x 50, +)
Ravichandran Ashwin (6 matches, 40 wickets, average 16.42, SR 38.47, 4x 5-for)
Mitchell Starc (8 matches, 34 wickets, average 29.47, SR 39.5, 1x 5-for)
Stuart Broad (8 matches, 38 wickets, average 26.28, SR 45.15, 1x 5-for)
Nathan Lyon (10 matches, 43 wickets, average 23.62, SR 50.55, 2x 5-for)

ODI:

Shubman Gill (29 matches, 1584 runs, average 63.36, 5x 100, 9x 50)
Rohit Sharma (27 matches, 1255 runs, average 52.29, 2x 100, 9x 50, c)
Virat Kohli (27 matches, 1377 runs, average 72.47, 6x 100, 8x 50)
KL Rahul (26 matches, 1039 runs, average 69.26, 2x 100, 7x 50)
Mohammad Rizwan (25 matches, 1023 runs, average 63.93, 1x 100, 7x 50, +)
Darryl Mitchell (26 matches, 1204 runs, average 52.34, 5x 100, 3x 50; 9 wickets, average 22.66, SR 21.6, ER 6.27)
Mitchell Marsh (20 matches, 858 runs, average 47.66, 2x 100, 5x 50; 2 wickets, average 48, SR 39, ER 7.38)
Kuldeep Yadav (30 matches, 49 wickets, average 20.48, SR 26.65, ER 4.61)
Mohammed Shami (19 matches, 43 wickets, average 16.46, SR 18.53, ER 5.32)
Mohammed Siraj (25 matches, 44 wickets, average 20.68, SR 23.47, ER 5.28)
Sandeep Lamicchane (21 matches, 43 wickets, average 22.04, SR 27.25, ER 4.85)

Only debates for me were Lorcan Tucker vs Tom Blundell (Blundell more runs but inferior average) in the test arena and Rizwan vs Azam in the ODI.

Way too many Indians in the ODI. It’s a World Cup year they all folded like a deck of cards

Give me who you think should be ahead of them.

Yeah, they failed in one (yes, the most important but one) game this year, but the TOTY reflects the entire year. Gill, Sharma and Kohli had the most runs this year. They had better averages than their rivals for those spots. KL Rahul was clearly the best keeper/bat in ODI's this year, Kuldeep clearly the best spinner, and the two quicks clearly ahead of the rest except maybe Shaheen Afridi.

Head in for mine. He may not have the sheer number of stats due to his injury...but he's stepped up with multiple centuries in the world cup and BOG honours in both the semifinal and final.

He has nowhere near the record this year that the other two openers had.

Agreed and already conceded in my previous post.

He's THE story of 2023 though. Has to fit in somewhere IMO.
I see it as similar to the AA team. He missed half the year, so he's not part of it. I'm not punishing a guy who played more games because he didn't get injured because he didn't perform in one game
How many 1 day games has Australia played this year compared with other countries.
21 matches.

Does not seem that many.Pretty hard selecting a best 1 day side from all countries over a year. How many games would Head M.Marsh and Maxwell have played. If trying to select the best team surely you go by the teams that played in the World Cup.

Fair enough that we see it differently.

For mine, the world cup only comes around every 4 years. It's like the olympics of ODI cricket. A lot of the best swimmers and runners time their runs to peak in the olympics...and are duly recognised for it. The world cup is what teams play for, it's when you play your best team and aren't experimenting or resting anyone. I'd weight the world cup games and particularly the finals double or even triple normal bilateral matches.

21 "isn't that many". Marsh played 20 as shown by the fact that he was picked. And yeah, basically all of the players above had a great WC. Head missed too many games to be considered ahead of Sharma or Gill.

Seriously.

I struggle to think of the other 11 games played by Australia in 1 day games this season, as for other countries playing each other no idea.Is there any stats any where.

Google 2023 ODI runs/wickets

And that all counts for nothing easy to make runs in meaningless bilateral series. They are a bunch of chokers

Jadeja ahead of Lyon in the Test team.
Nope. Lyon had the better year. Only change I'd make is Cummins in for Starc
Warner not in test team.of the year ??
There have been 5 superior openers than him this year at a minimum in Khawaja, Karunaratne, Duckett, Crawley and Sharma. Then you could argue Latham, Conway, Brathwaite, Shafique and Elgar have had better years. So he'd struggle to make the third best team of the year, let alone first.
