More to do with the quality/timeline of those guys. None are walk-up starts in our best 22 so there's reasons for either the club or the player (or both) to wait and see what develops and what options they have:
  • Harry Sharp - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Marcus Adams - 😭
  • Rhys Mathieson (R) - delistee?
  • Kai Lohmann - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Callum Ah Chee - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Daniel Rich - age
  • Nakia Cockatoo (R) - delistee?
  • James Madden - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Deven Robertson - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Dayne Zorko - age
  • Blake Coleman - delistee?
  • Carter Michael (R) - rookie
  • Darryl McDowell-White jnr (R) - rookie
  • Ryan Lester (R) - age
  • Tom Fullarton - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Conor McKenna (R) - senior player
  • Shadeau Brain (R) - rookie
  • Darragh Joyce (R) - rookie
McKenna is the obvious exception to the list, but everyone else is either a rookie list player (generally a year at a time prospect anyway), on the tailend of their career and will probably re-sign if offered without too many worries once all is said and done, or in that vague area where they're good in the reserves but not cemented in the seniors - those guys often have differing ideas of contract value and are also vulnerable to poaching for more opportunities.
Yep McKenna a clear exception, hoping the mail about him wanting to stay is true. Gun.
The other players we would definitely want and other clubs would chase:
Lohmann - hoping he gets some more games, is told he is a Zorko / Linc replacement and stays
Ah Chee - i was worried about him but hearing he has only been out because of injury, he would definitely stay you'd think.
Roberston - seems more likely to stay as getting some games, but would be some flight risk
*Prior - contracted until 2024 but suddenly seems to have slipped down the pecking order given Fletcher's quick rise and the fact Rich is out but Prior is still not getting a game. He might push to go if Roberston goes. Be a shame to lose him, i still have high hopes even though he was putrid v Hawks. Was good v pies and v dogs last year i thought at the time it was a breakout game but he picked up an injury and struggled to get back in to the side.

Marcus is coming out of retirement.

Or we've signed Lucy as an AFLW player (not sure of her age, etc).
Quick google but Lucy is only 13 this year.

I guess it's just a tease of Levi?

Probably, 13 is a bit early to bring in an AFLW debutant. :D
Levi was up here for a game on the weekend so he has hung around to train with the Club for this week I presume.

The big difference i see in the brothers.
Will Ashcroft can play a whole AFL game gathering 27 disposals 11 contested and his hair stays immaculate.
Levi can't get through a training run without his hair being messed up.
Needs to fix that up if he wants to play for the Lions.

Some considered decisions need to be made, taking into consideration future F/S options, Academy players coming through, what is available in the free agency sphere, our maneuvering for draft capital and the age profile of our senior list. Also where and how we finish this year will have a significant bearing on how we approach our future list management options.

With our list management we have made some errors recently such as signing Lyons and Gardner on long term (3years) deals. Which in hindsight may impact on our list management post 2023.

I agree with the strategy of taking stock at the end of the year. Other than McKenna all the rest have a question mark if they remain or go.

Signing Lyons is not an error in my view. With Dunkley's arrival and taking over Lyons spot, Lyons has taken over Matho's spot in 2s. I believe the quality of our depth has gone up for 2024. It means we'll lose Matho next year which is a shame but team is going through a bit of churn as expected.

I'd personally retain Joyce as a rookie or on another 1 year senior contract. He'll be far better as break the glass depth. We are likely to be in the window for a year or two where this type KP depth will be of great value.

Not even in his draft year yet and I reckon he could get 20+ touches against West Coast on the weekend.

Give Levi the number 8 and play them at opposite ends of the ground?

Nah, in-and-under. I've read the younger one has a lot more white line fever and mongrel, he'll be a handful through the middle already.

We would need to keep one of our hbf’ers in Esava’s back pocket for him to handball to after every intercept mark.
True poor distribution of the football I prefer Himmelberg or McKay

we need to get Marcus back to the club either at staff level or board level

Dev is in a difficult situation contract wise. He is not a high enough draft pick nor does he have the body of work for another club to offer him a total **** off level contract that the lions would not be able to roughly match. The eagles could probably offer him a modest pay bump and guaranteed play time. They would probably want a long term commitment in exchange, particularly given they are due for a few years of rebuilding. Dev probably wants a short 'prove it' style contract where he can build his afl experience/reputation so he can leverage that into a much better contract in the future. I think a small conteact at the lions to get gim to free agency is probably what is ideal for him. Best case scenario he is a starting mid in a premiership team and can demand what he wants i his contract. Worst case scenario he doesn't progress and becomes a journeyman returning to West Coast on a similar contract to what he gets right now.

Robertson seems likely to get inside time this week with Dunks out was actually quite good late last round against Tigers when given the opportunity

FWIW, 9 News in Adelaide reported overnight that Port have inquired about Fort, who is also apparently off contract this year (not sure I saw his name on the OOC list).

If he moves on then we will need to bring in another back up ruck you'd think, or for ressie watches are the two younger guys (Lane/Smith) ready to go?

Lane and Smith have been a tad underwhelming from my limited viewing of the reserves, still very young for ruckmen though(Smith 20 & Lane 21) Fort is not OOC until next season according to our roster watch thread... although footywire as him OOC this season.

IMO if Fort were to leave we would need another mature age ruck in case of injury to O.

posted in the VFL thread this week that their development seems slow, after thinking about it over the last two or three games. in my uneducated opinion both have shown glimpses but neither are ready for the AFL.

of course in posting this I am hoping the lads make me eat my words over the rest of the season.

Makes sense teams would enquire about Fort. If anyone is short of a ruck he is no world beater but is ready to go right now and hold his own for sure. You couldnt blame him for going.

Honestly would have loved for 1 of Lane/Smith to have at least got a look in (maybe for a game like this against West Coast) to see what they are made of. Next season they would really hope to start playing the odd game or they will likely never make it
