He still goes missing a lot. That won't be fixed. Therefore he won't improve. He will always be inconsistent. When he is consistent I'll then eat my words.
In the 2022 final series he kicked 9 goals. Without him & Berry in the 2022 in the semi against Melbourne we would have lost the game in my opinion. Not sure what evidence you need nor why you believe he goes missing with the below stats from 2023. lol.

Season 2023: 15th in the League for Goal Kicking. 41 goals.
Season 2023: 8th in the League for Goal Assists.

I think most clubs would be interested in him but just my opinion.

Also think (& have said this a few times. ;)) our forward line is our jewel in the crown when comparing us to other teams in the competition. They regularly dominate games as a 6 even when the ball feed into them is average. I wouldn't swap any of them right now and think they give us the best chance to win a flag while they are all there.

One moment that comes to mind is that little tap that gave charlie a goal in hippy's first game back from a knee last year.
That was one of my favourite moments of 2022 to be honest. I was at that game, behind those goals, and I may have dropped the f bomb in delight when I saw it. To the consternation of a few of the chardonnay sippers in my area 🤢

Similarly in 2023, I think Eric's best moment was against Collingwood on Easter Thursday when he totally smashed Frampton kamikaze style in a marking contest, brought the ball to ground and we got a goal out of it.

Hopefully he realises that his slight frame need not be an impediment to being able to play that physical key forward type of role when the moment demands it.

Goals are great but his role can bring so much more than that to the team.

On Hippy
Green (2023) being arguably his best season. Blue (2018/9) being arguably his equal 2nd best seasons.
Hippy has been fairly consistent in his average goals per game. Career is 1.5, last year 1.6, best season 1.7.
His total shots on goal: 41, 46, 64, 64, 43, 46, 42, 70.
The 70 this year was mainly because he played more games being 26. The two 64's he played 22 and 23 games.

One area he improved in last year was goal assists: 5, 11, 13, 9, 8, 5, 11, 23.
Another is marks I50 with career high average of 2.6. Totals being 16, 23, 43, 47, 31, 33, 30, 69.

One finals match out of all he has played in is not a good strike rate.

Let’s say for argument’s sake, Hipwood isn’t that great (although stats suggest otherwise), who are you going to get to replace him at his wage anyway?

KPFs are expensive and great ones are extremely rare, it isn’t like you can just go screw it, let’s drop him and pick someone else up who os significantly better on a similar wage.

Well when he signed for three years it was around 2 million. So $650,000 a year most likely. So it won't be less than that and could be upwards of $700,000-750,000. You can't tell me he is worth that. I wouldn't pay $500,000 a year for him. No team would. He doesn't step up in big games and is unreliable in front of goal. Locking him in on what coin he may be on now for 6 years is ludicrous.

The other way to look at Hipwood investment

Average AFL salary is tracking at $400k

Key forwards who are at Hipwood's age and goalkicking profile wouldn't be available at the lower end of this salary table bracket below. He'll easily sit between 600k and 800k.

With forecasted cap increase in the upcoming years, I think we have done a shrewd investment locking Hipwood away for next 7. We could've done 600/3 years then be looking at 900/3 years if he peaks during the absolute prime like Daniher. Instead if we have done 700k/7 years it's a well thought out move by the club.

With Hippy this last year, it would be interesting to see stats comparisons between when Gunston was in the team and when he was not because it really felt to me that he played much better when he was the second banana without Gunners in the team.

When you look at his career, he is just about the most consistent player you could get.
I don't really know what you are on about really.

Makes me wonder what we'll try next season. Zorks was on SEN last week and mentioned how impressed he was with Brandon Ryan.

I have been arguing for some months now that Hipwood is massively underrated across the competition. People just keep comparing him to the number one guy in other teams. Apart from Geelong I think every club would kill to have their second forward perform as well as Hipwood did this year.

And another factor is he is arguably our number 3 target with Charlie also ahead of him

Well SpecialBruce , you have been shouted down:). i am also one that has always rated him. Has that bit of white line fever needed. As others have said, for what we get, he is a bargain. And an academy product.

Hope you noted he was down in Vic with the Berry boys for their marathon, and involved in the junior clinic held s part of it.

I've actually enjoyed the discussion from both sides. :thumbsu: Much more civilised points of view than others for sure.

The cynic in me says it suggests we might have salary cap issues in coming... hope I'm wrong obviously. A tight salary cap is to be expected I suppose when you've been at the top of the mountain for as long as we have been.
We shouldn't have gone for Doedee if that's the case. But I don't think we'll have put ourselves in a hole. With a few veterans retiring or close to retiring, that opens up a bit of space. Rich just now, Zorko likely after next season. And then when 2026 has finished, Neale and Oscar will both be out of contract, at ages 33 and 32 respectively. By that time the Ashcrofts, Smith and Lane should be ready to take over.

With the recent rise in Salary cap, I would be surprised if any club has immediate salary cap concerns.
A couple of year might be a different story though.

Hipwood had a career best season. He started using his weapon more being his athleticism and speed and seemed to play as a genuine hit up centre half forward. I thought his lead up work was really good and it was clear he improved his tank.

He had a poor granny along with fair few but all in all if he continues to run his opponent up and down the ground I think it’s a great option for us and helps free up a couple of others. The big area he needs to work on is his contested marking. He drops a lot he should take.
