He is waying up his options as we speak. Waiting for Hardwick to come to Australia and meet him in person. Has had a few interviews with VIC clubs. We are keen and in with a shot as Sam thought the interview went well. 3 months ago he was gone but since then he has had opportunities to play in his correct position (which is all he wanted) and Dew is now gone. He’s waying up between staying at GC, North and another club. 50/50 as of last week. It’s a big and potentially life changing decision for him to make.

The other club is Hawthorn.

We’re in this as he was a mad North fan.

The GC approach is definitely key. I feel we’d be in front of Hawthorn if we really wanted to push.

Thanks for the update. If he's a die-hard roos fan then maybe a big emotional win today can catch some attention. He can come and claim number 10 or 7.

That sounds more promising than I was expecting. Thanks for the intel.

I wonder how it gets done in terms of picks. Guessing the bones of the deal would have to be Port’s first?

I think that's very reasonable scenario if 1) North make it absolutely clear they'll take Curtin with 2 and 2) Curtin doesn't come out and outright say he'd be trying to leave after the first season (highly unlikely). Imagine there's a decent level of respect between WCE and Nth or at least not an outward hostility.
Especially if McKay decides to leave, Curtin is just the choice we should have if available at our pick.

Why give up the Port 1st to get another mid when we can fill a need?

It’s about time we got a Roos fan that wanted to come to the club.

Some on here are going to be very disappointed given that they have already offloaded all our picks including some we don't even have yet to get 4-5 draftees in.... personally think we will only be getting 2-3 depending on McKay. We will still need picks to get in these fringe players. While most won't require high picks, picks are still needed. Flanders would be at least Ports now based off recent form. Clark still think will be a low 2nd or our 3rd, fisher under contract as is Ralphsmith

Usually when I think of f###king in AFL, it’s being F##ked over by the umpires… but sure

Nice. Except you have to cut 13 players off our primary list to do this. Seems like a lot.
Okay, this is a good point.

Removed from primary list:
Mahoney
Bonar
Ziebell
Cunnington
Lazzaro
Hall
Perez
Spicer
Young
Mckay

So 10 players. (Could place a couple of these on the rookie list, potentially.)

On reflection, it's a little OTT to get Graham, Haynes AND one of Melican and Baldwin, since we'd be drafting at least one elite KPD too.

And unless we can get Derksen on the rookie list, lets scratch him off for the sake of the exercise.

Maybe we could just ask Xerri nicely if he minds being on the rookie list?

Added to the primary list:

Sanders (prelist)
Watson, Curtin and one of McKercher and O'Sullivan (picks 2, 3 and GC5)
Graham (GC5)
A. Reid / Flanders (Port pick)
Haynes (salary dump)
Riccardi (ibid)
Stephens (third rounder)
Fisher (third rounder)
Ralphsmith / D'Ambrosio / Clark (GWS third rounder)

Brayden George will be joining the list, as well

Either we take Reid with pick 1 or we trade 1 for 2 and ~15 and take Curtin with 2 imo. There is no bad blood between the clubs so I cant imagine there will be much smoke and mirrors when the respect of a trade can be done. Reid can also take the honour of being pick 1 in a trade scenario.

Refreshing to see a realistic and pragmatic WCE fan when it comes to pick 1.

That bzparkes dude in the drafts and trading thread is absolutely delusional.

Okay but who are we actually keeping from this year's rookie list?

I could see Turner, Dawson, Edwards, Howe and potentially Free going.

Shiels probably too, though I hope not.

That only leaves Drury and Hansen.

If we keep the extended rookie list, that's up to 6 available spots.
Of the rookies I’m keeping turner (yes you read that correctly), Drury and RHJ

Shiels to retire - farewell game in final round when he’s back from injury

Thoights on another Brady megatrade special?

out
NM: Pick 2, pick 3, pick ~14, future 2nd
GC: Pick 5, Flanders
WC: Pick 1

in
NM: Pick 1 (Reid), pick 5 (Watson/O'Sullivan), Flanders
GC: Pick 2 (ahead of Walter bid) future 2nd
WC: Pick 3 (Curtin), pick ~14

Only works if GC don't want Curtin, but otherwise seems pretty balanced & gets everyone what they want.

Certainly worth considering.

Is he a father-son that we didn't want?
On the long list of father sons that didn’t qualify after they changed the rules.

By the time the draft comes around in November and reading all the different scenarios and combinations posted on here, what hair I had left on my head will well and truly been pulled out.

Is Flanders worth the equivalent of pick 5?

Hawthorn and Essendon and you guys were Flanders meetings - these were held over the bye rounds.

Between you and Hawthorn, with Hawthorn in the box seat.

It’s the most likely of all scenarios IMO. Rawlings and O’Brien will help each other as they did last year.
