Be interesting the discussion with Cunnington and Jack. I personally would move them both on if possible as I think both don't fit what I see as the best structure for the defence or midfield, but not sure I see us making the hard call.

If I was to guess, Cunners will retire and Jack sign for 1 year.
l would only move Jack on if we could get Whitfield...

Not sure what you're implying by that? They were pissed we did the deal and missed the chance?

They got excited doing the deal after Melbourne approached them with an accompanying comment that "nobody ever usually wants to trade with us".

Ran through some names and that one (Flanders) seemed to get a bit of a reaction. My assumption was they hadn't projected him to be available but didn't delve further, so that remains an assumption.

Sam Flanders still putting up huge numbers in the VFL.

He might be one to watch at the end of the year, as he's OOC and probably coming home.

He was a diehard BFNAAK, I also know that he was our likely selection in 2019 had we not traded with Melbourne (Kosi Pickett @ #12) which we traded into their F1 (Tom Powell) selection.

He was high on our board in his draft year.

Not an absolutely pressing need, but he could be one to watch for a F2 as an example imo.

Josh Fahey at GWS also looks a similar type in the VFL, just snuck in for a sub spot and while contracted to 2024 there is echoes of St Kilda all up in Jack Steele. Academy product though which is a downside.

The best sides have 5-6 dynamic goal kickers. (Collingwood: Elliott, Johnson, Hill, Ginnivan, McCreery + Mids) (Brisbane: Cameron, Bailey, McCarthy, Rayner + Mids)

Sheezel and Zurhaar I think are definately two. Stephenson will be more than handy in a top side.

We probably need another 2-3 quality types. Hoping that Brayden George is one of those.

So Watson and 1 more imo.

We having glaring list holes in the following:

Key Backs
Key Forwards
Wingman
Small Forwards
General Defender
Sheezel Comben Curtis
(Mobile KPF) Larkey Watson

Resting ruck:CCJ

Rotating through mid/HF:Zurhaar

Comben and CCJ to work as a high CHFs into the middle to clunk marks, help bring manic pressure (Comben) and work back into the forward line. Larkey to be the leading focus.

Developing/stop-gaps: Harvey, Tucker, George, Thomas, Spicer

Needs over next 24 months: 2xKPF developing, another pressure crumber to add to Watson.

More than enough firepower, campaigner, toughness and skill once we land Watson and a few others over the next two drafts.

I’d try to get Jeremy Sharp off their hands too. Hard running winger who can’t get an extended crack at AFL level.

I know we rated him top 5. We didn’t expect him to be at our pick which is why we traded it out. We really wanted either Ash or Flanders.

Funny though, we didn’t rate Serong inside the top 15 and he is looking like being top 3 in that draft with ease.

We're not that good at this drafting business.

What years was Luff in charge of our drafting? OTC raving about big aggressive Ollie Lord from Port, taken pick 49 in 2020. We took Lazaro and Spicer before Lord, Samson Ryan or even Highmore from Saints.
In that same draft we’d already taken WiPhi and Tom Powell, both on the smallish side for mids.
WTf did we need another 180cm mid for? Absolutely clueless list management. Any wonder we are where we are.

If Watson fixes the small forward issue and Comben, Xerri and CCJ stay fit what is the glaring need on the list? I think it’s an another winger?
Assuming a small forward post is filled (still need another small forward for depth).

  • Kpd
  • kpf
  • project ruck
  • hb speedster/class
  • tall clearance mid

Probably still need a fast developing winger as well.

Sharp/Flanders/ H Clark can solve some of those gaps.

I reckon we should go for a experienced forward to help out Larkey etc

I like Wade Derksen from GWS, at the moment he is behind Hogan and Cadman. He was only taken in the MSD last year so there is plenty of upside there. Jake Riccardi could be an option too but he isn’t much of a contested marking threat which is what we desperately need.

Don’t think there will be much else out there on on the open market. Maybe Josh Treacy from Freo. He’d come cheap but isn’t the best athlete out there.

Maybe we can get him cheap, GWS seem to have bleached him:
