Why wouldn’t they just want to pick this kid at one and give him the 10k?

Unless they think they can actually get Curtin as well?

I’m sure there is no way even they think that’s possible.

If Curtin was in the 7-15 range, yeah I perhaps get trying to capitalise on the number one pick. But if he is touted at 2. I don’t get it.

The media is doing a hell of a lot of talking for the Eagles over Reid.

I've got inside information from an unnamed source that Harley Reid himself has declared he wants to go the Melbourne Demons. Another painful year for us shinbonners incoming. The only positive we can take outta this situation is that we resigned Liam Sheills for another year. #wheresthejustice #itskayneturnersworldthatwerealllivingin
So this is your 12th go at trolling about Reid.
Hopefully by the 20th incarnation you might have a better grasp on how to do it without being so obvious

WHY NORTH MELBOURNE IS IN POSITION A

The Kangaroos were on the verge of entering this year’s trade period armed with Pick 1 – and potentially Pick 2, more on that later – until their stirring, spirited win over Gold Coast in Round 24.

Still, the Roos loom as one of this off-season’s big trade players.

Not only do the Roos now hold Pick 2, there’s every chance they hold Pick 3 too, with rival clubs expecting North to be handed a first-round selection as compensation for losing Ben McKay. While Pick 3 might seem ‘overs’ for McKay, who endured an indifferent 2023 campaign, the reality is he’s the best established key defender on the market – after Harry Himmelberg re-signed at the Giants and Tom Barrass committed to his current Eagles deal – and will likely command a bidding war, with clubs like Sydney, Essendon, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide all chasing a tall backman.

Reid is considered a generational talent – one experienced recruiter told foxfooty.com.au earlier this year Reid was the best prospect they’d ever seen come through the talent pathway – and would be hard to pass up if there was a genuine chance you could get him. And with Picks 2 and 3 – as well as the first-rounder tied to Port Adelaide’s finishing position – the Kangaroos would be well armed to make a play for Pick 1.

And of all the clubs that would be interested in the first draft pick, the Roos would clearly appeal most to West Coast, as the Eagles would only move one spot down the order and, therefore, be able to land Curtin. Speaking about the about the prospect of West Coast trading Pick 1, one club recruiter told foxfooty.com.au last month: “It’d be North or nothing.”

But there’s a few steps left first. McKay needs to decide what he’s doing then, if he wants to leave, nominate a club. Then North Melbourne must decide whether it matches that club’s offer for the restricted free agent – therefore forcing a trade – or let him walk and accept the (likely juicy) compensation pick handed to them. And then decide how aggressively they want to trade up the order.

tldr

As much as the Hawks and Demons would like to move up the order, North Melbourne looks like the only club the Eagles would truly entertain trading with, for the sense is West Coast don’t want to miss a prospect like Curtin, who could be the long-term replacement for Hurn.

Imagine Reid joining the likes of Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tarryn Thomas, Will Phillips and Jy Simpkin under the tutelage of Alastair Clarkson?

It would be interesting if we said we wanted Curtin too given our lack of defenders, if we refused to trade and said we are taking Curtin with our first pick would Eagles cut their losses and take the best deal they can get for pick 1 or just take Curtin with pick 1?

We got cockblocked with pick 3 back when we took Phillips because everyone was happy with the talent that would fall their way regardless who went where.

What's happening with Leek Aleer? There were quite a few on this board that liked him. He hasn't played much?

Tallish defender at 194cm. Worth a conversation as part of the Haynes salary dump?

Leeks goals. :stern look

Stating at the outset that I think the most likely play here is that the Eagles take Reid.

If there is actually an unlikely play to be had I hope that we f*** with them. There is a backhander owed from our club to theirs.

Rawlings is more likely to trade pick 2, 3 and 16 than for us to **** anyone. We couldn't even send a B Grade into the PSD.

I dunno, more likely we're excessively friendly. They really came to the party on the mega trade last year.

I don't mind being fair with Eagles, they have never screwed us and they really bent over last year to get that mediocre deal done.

Um, sure they have. In 2013 they made us pay pick 8 for Luke by bidding for him at pick 6 when we could have used pick 30 to get him.

they subsequently traded pick 6.

and yes that deal was mediocre.

wern't they the ones who bid on Luke Mcdonald, forcing us to use a first round pick, i'd consider that right up their with murder
Yes but that's on us for taking him, we should have called their bluff and let them have him we could have taken Cripps instead.

They genuinely wanted him at pick 8, he had a pretty good couple of years in the juniors, same with Crows bidding on Thomas. I don't think clubs bid to screw other clubs, they would genuinely want that player with that pick and clubs tend to be on the light side, tend to underbid, ie Daicos.

Agree with this. If you work through the scenarios there is no way we should give up anything of value for Reid. If WC just wants Reid, fine, no deal. Assuming WC has an interest in Curtin, trading 1 to someone else won't get Curtin to WC because we have pick 2. Even if WC believe we don't want Curtin, it's quite credible for us to say that we'll trade the pick for someone who does want Curtin (all the moreso as we'll likely get pick 3 anyway).

TBH I'm fairly sure the rule of the day was you nominated before the drafts that you'd select someone. So we had not much choice. The AFL changed rule not longer afterwards.
It was done before the draft, but I think clubs could still decline to match.

Was enjoyable reading about how Gary Ablett Jnr cost Geelong its third round pick.
