I'm not on board with trading out Max (although if the offer was Harley Reid you'd have to consider it very closely), but I am not convinced Ben is a need anymore. Before Hayes, Caminiti and Owens, the cupboard was utterly bare in the key forward department, but things have changed since then, and our salary cap is better spent elsewhere.

I’m not all that down with blasting our draft hand for the next two years on one dude.

We still have midfielders to add.
That's fair enough to have that opinion

I just thought by your statement that you must have heard wasn't going anywhere

I'd have no issue with giving up two firsts for him. Two years ago, no, but I'm rapt with the mids we've brought in.

I also think that if there was any inkling of him wanting to come home the club would be straight onto it

Ross isn’t getting any younger.
Billings isn’t a midfielder.
Steele is becoming injury-prone.
Jones can’t get on the park.
Bytel can’t stay on it.
Gresham may leave in FA.
Byrnes was written off until very recently.
Stocker has played four games with us, that’s it.

That’s eight already.

You don’t stop improving in the middle… that’s how you end up with the Richo years…
I never said stop, I'm just saying that of we spent a draft pick picking up Ben king, it wouldn't blow up the system.

Over the last two years we've taken NWM, Owens, Windhager, Phillipou and Hotten

Its not as though we haven't invested in this area.

And I agree that bringing in King doesn't mean we can't bring in other players. He's not going to cost every draft pick we hold.

It's not going to be this year anyway as he's contracted, so if we want another mid on top of the ones we have then take one this year.

You forgot the potentially best of all of them.

We will always struggle to bring in big name players to our club so it's not just as easy as saying we will just bring in an elite mid by offering money.

We've done that time and time again over the last 10 years and none have said yes.

The draft is the best way to find one and we've been able to bolster our midfield over the last two drafts with Phillipou, Owens and Windhager.

I was against chasing him last time because we had too many other holes on the list that needing filling but I'm confident in what we have now

Having the two Kings in our forward 50 would be a nightmare for opposition clubs.

Absolutely, midfield is where the game is won/lost, a dominant midfield will make any forwards/defence look good. As good as Crouch, Steele and Ross are, they are all 28-30 next year, we need to find the next group of young mids quickly, investing 2 first round + 800k plus for Ben King when we have Keeler and Heath in the wings is not wise..

Do we though? I'm not sure what we need now but our extractors are good and we are moving the ball well on the outside. To me some ruck depth and perhaps an electric small forward to replace Butler. McKay doesn't look a pressing needs to me. Howard, Battle and Wilkie all look solid.

Perhaps a midfield depth option like Matt Crouch who would be free and on minimum chips.

Probably just elite talent at the moment but plenty are stepping up a rung. Almost need to play out the season to work out our holes.

Owens, Windhager, Phillipou. Found them.

Keeler and Heath are far from shoe ins to ever make it

We will know a lot more about them by the time his contract is up though. If they look like becoming stars then we can forget about Ben, it is a big if though

Agree with getting Matt Crouch for peanuts, then load up on draft picks and trade in young players from GWS/Carlton/GCS who are looking opportunities (SOS special)

We need more than just Windhager, Owens and Phillipou, we need 2-3 more high potential mids.. Remember the days when we thought Billings, Dunstan and Acres were going to be our A grade young midfield group? We cannot leave it to hope/chance this time, keep drafting best mids and fill other holes in the list, turnover the list yearly so we keep the high standard.. for example, Allison, Highmore, Mckenzie and Connelly should be nervous..

Throw in Hunter Clark, Ryan Byrnes, Jack Bytel and Ollie Hotton into that mix

Jade Gresham is only 25

We also have a full set of draft picks this year to use how ever we choose before Ben King comes out of contract

I always loved the romanticism of getting Bing but the question of the relief ruck role was something I could never satisfactorily answer. Until now, that is.

I genuinely think we can afford to have x2 Kings + a third tall such as Membrey or Caminiti (I’d prefer the latter if his apparent trajectory is anything to go by, but I’m not Membrey’s biggest fan). This is because Owens is showing excellent promise as a relief ruck, spending the rest of his time in the forwardline/midfield. I believe he’s a much closer match to RoMa’s play style of less tap finesse but elite follow up work with contested possessions, tackles, and clearances.

It might be significantly easier to just rotate between these two, than to force some poor sod in there just because of their height. The excellent bonus is allowing us to play 2 genuine key forwards plus a third tall (a role I think Caminiti can play well, given his pace and attack on the ball).
