Butler being subbed out of the game last week is a nice little reminder that our speedy small forward stocks are extremely low. Nobody likes to acknowledge it but they’re pretty important if you want a premiership even if they don’t average a goal a game. We need to find 3 or 4 over the next couple of years.

We did only have the 2 tackles inside 50 which was really disappointing

I’m not sure how we’d find room for more than one more small forward though with Gresham and Higgins down there

Ideally I’d like to see them both improve their defensive game. Some of Greshams efforts were noticeably poor and it’s never been a strength of Higgins

I agree with you on the lack of defensive effort, however I think Butler and Gresham are playing as small key forwards at the moment. Their role is to play one out as they've got the craft and strength to put up a fight against a key back. I don't think Butler has that capability and as a result should be playing a bit higher up the ground as a link man where he can use his pace a bit more. The pressure game won't come back into play until we have King and Membrey back.

I’m assuming their defensive stuff will be sorted over time with Ross. Higgins looked like he was chasing but being pretty slow for his size I just don’t think he can catch anyone that’s running away from him. Butler turns 27 this year as well so he’s not exactly someone we can count on for the next 5+ years either.

Without someone who can get f50 tackles and kick goals then we run an extra mid through there. I'd think Steele and Chito and Windy rotating through would provide plenty of value.

He had one good season and stoped looking interested. He was aggressive, now he looks bored.

Freo used the ball well in the backline, they just couldn't move it with any freedom once they got outside defensive 50. Their backline is very very good and we were playing 3 kids. Until we get a set frontline set up playing together we will probably look pretty scrappy in attack. We just have to cobble something together for another 5 weeks or so and we should be right.

Our smalls were having to run up the field with the play which means that they aren't set up up forward when the ball comes in. Gresham looked like he was struggling to know who to cover more than lazy.

That said we should definitely chase Kai Lohman. He's one of those guys you see play VFL and thing he's way too good to be at that level. He's X factor heavy and likes a goal.

I agree most KPFs wouldn't show much for a few years, he'd probably be developing in the reserves if they had a ready made second KPF.

Which is why I suggested a guy like amon wouldn't be crazy to target.

If all goes to plan and we are playing finals this year and pushing for a flag in the next 3 years (before the likes of steele, marshall, sinclair, crouch, membrey etc all turn 30+)... then replacing nwm with a ready to go replacement for minimal trade cost is what we need.... not an 18 year old.

Peter Wright couldn’t get a game at GC a couple of years back

Plenty of examples where a young player looking for opportunities has landed at a club cheaply and had a very good career

If all goes to plan and we are playing finals this year and pushing for a flag in the next 3 years (before the likes of steele, marshall, sinclair, crouch, membrey etc all turn 30+)... then replacing nwm with a ready to go replacement for minimal trade cost is what we need.... not an 18 year old.

I think finals this year and pushing for a flag within the next three years is a bit optimistic IMO. Talent wise I still think the list is a fair way off.

Membrey couldn't break into a forwardline where he had Tippett and Franklin ahead of him, I don't think many kids selected in the 3rd round would break into that forwardline.
Treacy can't break into a forwardline where there is no genuine number 1 key forward, Taberner is also B grade at best. Any half decent key forward would be able to hold down a spot in that forwardline.

Plenty of 20 year key forwards aren't good enough to hold their spot continuously but end up having good careers.

That's basically double or nothing on the current group, and if it fails then we're in a hole with the list and have to dig back out. Personally I'm not inclined to go double or nothing on the current seniors, not good enough, so I'd be looking for a top pick or a sub-23 year old to join the King-Windhager group.

Most key forwards are still finding their feet at 20 years of age

Josh Kennedy kicked 7 goals in 7 games at the same age

Tom Lynch kicked 8 goals in 8 games

The very best young key forwards like Kings, Franklin, Cameron etc have been able to do it for an early age but we'd be up for $1m a year and 2 x first round picks for them and even then, good luck finding one.

We've been trying to get King since he was drafted.

Gaurantee there will be plenty of interest around him this year, not just from us

Looked absolute poo to me. Dropped easy marks, and crapped himself when he had to go full-chested at Battle to keep them in it late.

Lohmann was way over-drafted IMO. Looks flashy, but not a big possession winner, and 2.10 in front of goal in the Unders ain’t great.

Looked good in his first year. Had his injury issues last year but was apparently very good in the WAFL when he returned
