2014 defined where we are today. Thankfully we are finally emerging and the future now looks bright. I'm excited for the next period, hope we can snare a couple of gun midfielders and/or develop our list into greatness.
Yep - great work by James Gallagher. I hope SOS doesn't stuff it up.

He has GWS playing a bit like Richmond though, so maybe learnt his best tricks when assisting there.

Fair list to work with though, reckon I could coach a few wins with those players on hand.
Riewoldt did say when he retired that Kingsley was the most impressive assistant he had worked with in his career. Kingsley himself said he learnt the most from working with Choco at Port, Lyon at the Saints (in 2011) and Hardwick at the Tigers. Suggests that the Watters/Richo years were not exactly fruitful for his development.

Tigers would be filthy though - if they'd known DH was going to leave mid-season, I reckon they would have done a succession process last year with Kingsley to keep him around.

He's got the Giants playing to their potential again (they have a top 4 list) which they haven't for 3-4 years. Good on him.

Any chance we can open a new thread to moan about things that happened in 2014 and this one sticks to the 2023 trade period.

2012-2020 was a shit show as far as our early picks were used.

Right up there with the great epic fails of history such as the Nazis and French trying to invade Russia during winter.

I think we highlight this period on a regular basis because we don't want it to ever happen again.

You are right though, it needs it's own thread.

Lethlean designed rebuilt this list and got promoted. The whole board who have approved every stupid decision all the way through have barely changed as well. Not sure that Sos is the greatest appointment and Gubby has been there for ages and must take responsibility for a lot of the trades that we've cocked up.

Depends on if you're a 'half full' person or a 'half empty' person?

Half Full - The two clubs that SOS managed previously have both made the prelim this season.

Half Empty - They did it after he was gone!

Those who are SOS knockers - as noted above, he was list manager for the Giants and then list manager for the Blues. Responsible for putting together the nucleus of two current preliminary finalists. Can argue the toss of some drafting but he had recruiters working for him who had drafting as their specialty (as he does now at the Saints).

SOS knockers, there's a gag in there somewhere.

Did he have a hand in recruiting any of our superstars in the past?

He always seemed a bit cabbagey to me.

Wait till we get back into the details of the Silvio Foschini transfer…
Worse still was 1970, Ian Stewart swapped for Bill Barrot…. only St Kilda 🥴

Finnis seemed to be very forgiving of poor performance. It was a job for life at the Saints with zero KPIs to meet. I think he was happy as long as you didn't ask for anything that would cost money. That football department was as bad as any ever assembled, even in the non professional era.
Poor bloke was in a catch 22. In debt to the AFL so not allowed to spend money. Had to run the back office and the football department, and as you say, knew nothing about football.
Hard to win games and make money when you can't spend money on good staff.
But still managed to source other peoples money to build brilliant facilities.
He had perform a role at the club that it wasn't possible for him to perform adequately.
The AFL have sorted this out for Melbourne, Sydney, GWS and GCS. They just wrote them cheques. Which is nice.

There's a lot of pissing and moaning on here about trades and draft selections and selling players out cheap and then watching them hit their straps at their new club, all while seemingly missing the glaringly obvious - DEVELOPMENT!!
its like booing a kid that switched from one club to another that is not ST.KILDA,a lot of people think small,we were 5-1 when when we played port and these small minded idiots are booing him, geez, that is the epitomy of small thinking people that dont deserve a premiership, bitching about the past gets you nowhere, learning from it might

that small minded, franlkly emarassing mentality that has our fans boo jhf hopefully isnt copied by those paid to compile our list

yep i wish i could filter through pages of whos out whos coming in,rather than our past blunders & posting other clubs blunders to make us feel better, focus 2024 & beyond

speaking of present day concerns i hope the hell the club has told SOS you can recruit one and only one carlton player, lets stop it at Dow this year before plowman marchbank zisher and bootsma all pull on the saints jumper

problem is there's not much different between the haves and have nots. theres a soft cap. so we know how much clubs spend.

for example we sacked pelchen to find someone who had a more pointed view on running a football dept. only to go hire jamie cox from cricket who admitted he was going to lean heavily on the senior coach alan richardson, the very guy he's meant to oversee. we all know how that turned out.

i'd argue we had more direction under pelchen than we did under cox. for example the stk academy stuff with Simon McPhee, which then went to water until we started ramp back up development under lethers.

so its not a case of us firing people or not having enough money.

we just didnt get the appointments or structure right. thats purely on the CEO.

Prefer not to trade for Dow & Jordan, they've had enough season's to prove themselves, just like a few of our lads that haven't.
Liam Henry is the correct one. Was pick 7 & is very talented. He probably had too much expectation & exposure on him over in the West. At 22 y.o, he's ready to perform.

There's another option.

Given he had 20+ 1st round picks during his time at GWS and another 10+ during his time at Carlton perhaps most of the posters on here could have got a similar result.

To me the whole problem with Pelchen was his blind plan for draft picks.
He might put out a target of 3 first round picks.
But they weren't looking at the actual players in the draft, just the picks. KPI right? One early first rounder might have been worth more than the 3 late ones.

On Bont, he was a half back flank.
If we drafted a HBF this year and SOS told us he was going to turn into a midfielder.....MELT MELT MELT .
