Ok so everybody who’s losing their mind at the thought of gaining Shiel.
Let’s just break this down very simply.
We are losing Gresham.
We want to get first round compo for Gresham.
If we don’t do the Shiel deal we don’t get the compo for Gresham.
This deal has absolutely nothing to do with an ageing Shiel and everything to do with getting a first round pick.
I’m all for it.

We are taking on Shiel and losing players to fit him. Not for a pick but a slight upgrade on Gresham compo. Not sure we are getting anything much out of it but another waste of a spot. If no-one is offering enough for Gresham we should keep him IMO.
In all reality I didn't think we would get close to a first round pick for Gresham - so really the outcome is very good.

Or we could back our kids to eventually improve.

Constantly bringing in these stop gaps might help win an extra game or two but it won't help us win a flag.

If SOS and Gubby are genuinely keen on bringing this bloke in for any other reason than to get a good compo fro Gresham then we are well and truly fooked
I think this is being very ignorant to our predicament.

Ross is ageing. He's had a bunch of soft tissue injuries but we looked better with him in the side.

And the reason why we looked better is because the kids are still a while off or aren't capable.

Pou is not going to be able to spend a full season in the middle as a full time inside mid.

Clarke is absolutely ****in useless in there and clearly isn't up to having full time minutes in there.

Owens and Windhager are developing sure they'll get more minutes but they can't run a whole season in there.

The cupboards ****ing bare. We need a stop gap solution for 12-24 months. Which gives us time to develop and draft.

Now… if you have 12 and 13 and then add Steele to that, Harley Reid comes on board.

Please discuss 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Prefer this Harley personally

That’s all we can hope for mate.

Trust the people in power. I get why you’re so apprehensive, we’ve wasted the last 10 years but at this stage what else can we do.

Not take gambles. Trying to rush has stuffed us up as much as poor drafting.

Good draft?

That top 10 had 3 guns and 2 went before our first pick in LDU Brayshaw and Naughton we went against taking.

The rest of the top 10 ranges from average to s**t

I was rated apparently before hand. In hindsight it looks pretty shit but that's the roll of the dice.

We don't need another 30 year old with injury issues of his own though. Having a midfield of 4 guys 28 plus (3 of them 30) is just going stunt the growth of younger mids.

I'm all for taking Shiel if it means we get a first round pick, but outside of that it would be madness.

No one is expecting Pou to become a full time mid next year, that was never suggested. But we should be trying to get more minutes into all of the younger mids and we already have Dow coming in.

Maattteeee you rate Rhys Matheson like he's the Robert Harvey of the VFL yet call Shiel ordinary???

Go ask a few Essendon fans about how much they rate Shiel. Matho would be a depth player that would come free and on minimum wage. Not on $900k and cost a pick. Still young and good enough to push for best 22 most weeks.

We need midfield depth and we need to be focussed. This looks like going in all kinds of directions with **** all focus.

Blokes on here whinging about coughing up $700k for a year of broken Shiel acting as though we haven’t paid a lot more for a lot worse in the last decade.

This is pure insanity sorry. Because we've done dumb shit in the past we have to be cool with doing more dumb shit? "I ****ed your sister and spent our mortgage repayments on the horses but compared to that time I tried to burn down the house for insurance and forgot to pay the insurance first....you need to get over it"

So just to understand your thought process lately…

We can’t go backwards. Need to improve on this season in 2024

But we also need to redeem the previous decades list failings

You don’t want to trade out players we have - but you don’t think we drafted very well when we drafted them.

You’re not a fan of any of the players linked. You think they are other clubs junk

Your not a fan of targeting and focusing on this draft as you think it’s a poor crop of kids and that you hate the idea it could mean we go backwards before they are ready.

Which in effect is correcting your issue with the list build in the last decade……

here it is re paddy dow dated sep 19

carlton paragraph
and the likes of Zac Fisher and Paddy Dow are expected to move clubs over a lack of senior opportunities this season.

st.kilda paragraph
They’ve also been linked to Carlton on-baller Paddy Dow — there’s some chance he remains at the Blues

i did read on some site with a paragraph on each club that is is possible he stays at carlton,it was like an afterthought, but certainly raised my eyebrow
He'd be an idiot to stay. He's not even named as an emergency this week. Clearly not in their plans other than a break glass in case of emergency option.

Well, we'll see how it turns out I guess. I'm pretty sure you understand what my position is. I looks like more gambling over planning again. And in 5 years we'll see where we've gone. I'll back Lyon to maximise what ever he has in front of him but we aren't building for a flag anytime soon IMO. Not really sure we have a clear idea on where we are going again. I guess I'll take what ever shit we dish up and we'll be back there again next year.

I think he goes. Can't see him hanging around, unless they make a GF, he gets into the side and stars and he looks set for best 22 next year.

If he's cheap you match IMO. Worst case they up their offer and you don't have to take their dump to do it.
and we end up with a forward pocket who can't kick a set shot from 40m, time to move on and get something for him now because next year he could be worth nothing.
and going by this years form he could well be worth nothing.

Surely with 2 round one picks we can secure something , lets see how it turns out.
The last couple years have been good.

so far sounds good
Henry
Dow
2 x 1st round picks

Building for our next shot at contention via the first round of the draft.

The method you have wanted for a decade

Could also come good and we end up with Coffield and Clark in the draft again.
