In terms of the playing list, Lyon was asked whether he’d spoken to reported St Kilda trade target Dylan Shiel.

While Lyon didn’t deny that the club was interested in the Don, he refused to admit any talks had happened and pondered where the noise of a potential move had come from.

“Well as a club, we don't sort of conduct our business in the media,” Lyon said.

“There's a lot of noise around it.

“I know he missed the last 10 rounds with quite a few injuries.

“It (the noise) certainly wasn't generated from us.

“So I'm not sure where that's all come from, to be honest.”

Shiel played 12 games in 2023 but was the activated substitute on two occasions. He missed much of the back end of the season with a foot injury.

Setting his fans up for a lesser result doesn't make sense though. If he promises to get pick 13 for him and then pays us to take him, they'll rip him to shreds.

They reported it on SEN too. Said the same deal and said we would have a win win with us getting a quality midfielder and them getting a small forward. They had it as the Bombers helping to get us a first round pick to give them for Shiel too. Not sure that it's all bullshit.

It sounds gross to me, personally I'd stiff them. Let them take Gresh for a band 1 then tell them our priorities have changed and we're going in a different direction.

Nothing to do with giving them Gresham. Gresham is a FA and can go where he wants. We get compensated and hand that pick straight back to them in a trade for Sheil.

Exactly People are misunderstanding. WE get 13 and Shiel , they get Gresham and part of his salary paid by us. In effect we are paying for his compo pick to be Band 1. Essendon DO NOT get a pick from us. Gresh is a FA remember

That's what makes the most sense. But the article is suggesting we trade that compensation back to ess for shiel

If it were me and we wanted to be fully ruthless I would say yes do it then refuse to trade for shiel

Why is it a poor example of trade/list management incompetence? That trade has 100% set us back years.

I am not giving Ralph much credence, but I've been absolutely shocked at our incompetence before, so surprise me.

Hannebery is relevant because it will go down as the worst/best salary dump of all time… shows that we have NFI how they're meant work. Fancy taking 3 million off Sydney's books whilst also giving them picks. We help them with Nick Blakey and end up with Bytel, Parker and an elite rehabbing cocaine addict who eeks out 18 average games in 4 years.

At absolute BEST assessment of Shiel and Gresh they’d be even (Shiel more exposed form but also way older and more injury prone).

In some ****ed up sideways World a straight swap would maybe pass muster, I wouldn’t like it but it’s not ridiculous.

But suggesting we’d give up Gresh AND the compo we’d get for Gresh, even if it’s not band 1 for Shiel. That’s actually ****ing idiotic.

In other words, Essendon are leaking a lot of stuff to the media and the media are reporting it verbatim.

Lyon’s words seem to suggest he is quietly irritated about it. His remark about Shiel’s injury history sounded ominous for any sort of deal being done, let alone one on Essendon’s terms (as reported).

The sooner Essendon change their List Manager the better.

We have played 3x more finals than we had in the decade prior to him. Not to mention he has been an example setter for players like Nas and windy coming through.

The hanneberry thing was a mistake...it's also no worse than deals that other clubs have done. Like shiel to essendon, touhy to cats for smedts, jet Anderson to north from hawks.....

Nick blakey was also an academy player and went with the 10th pick...completely unsure how our 2nd round pick is even relevant there...
