Might have missed a couple but my thoughts on WA players U16 performance at the carnival in no particular order:

Possibly due to reduced training and playing opportunities over the past 2 years (apart from WA who weren’t as impacted) I thought it was a particularly underwhelming carnival and I wasn’t impressed with the overall standard of games.

SA by far the best performing team at this stage, so worthy winners.

Most consistent performers across 3 games:

Roberts
Xavier Walsh
Jones
Cathcart
Petersen

Some individual solid game performers:

Champion
Creighton
Harvey
Martinson
Van der Struyf
Hansen
Allen
Ravenhill

Players with plenty of upside but would be overall disappointed with their impact at the carnival:

Koopa Walsh
Ravenhill
Douglas

Ones I look forward to watching and believe have biggest scope for future development :

Koopa Walsh
Ravenhill
Roberts
Creighton
Champion
Hansen
Douglas
Cathcart
Petersen
Allen
Jones
Xavier Walsh (2005)

I believe there will be some better talent to come out of this WA age group that weren’t picked in this initial 16’s squad. Looking forward to seeing them get some development opportunities in the near future.

Well summed up mate...would include Tyler Lindberg...he has something in a laconic, mercurial way.

Poor old Martinson....not sure he hit a single target last week....bit of a shame because he gives effort....but poor decision making and bad kicking isn't going to cut it

Lindberg is good in spurts, but as an overager he needs to add a bit more, but he is a nice mover and contributes well on the outside.

I see Boston Everitt has a 2006 birthday, does that make him eligible for the 2024 draft?
If so, how do people rate him? As a saints fan, a quality F/S would be amazing.

Had a rare day off today, and watched the Lions U16 academy v the GWS academy.

Final score, Lions 127 defeated GWS 27.

It wasn’t a great game, played in perfect conditions at Manuka oval.

Standouts to me from the Lions academy were:

#26 Billy Richardson, an over ager, December birth, who played ruck and KPP at either end. Looked good behind the ball and is a decent kick.

#28 Patrick Snell, KPF who also rotated through the ruck.

#22 Ryan Gilder, KPD who’s hard at it, runs through opponents (took out GWS’s KPF in the 3rd).

#21 Wyatt Greenaway, KPD very similar to Gilder. Both are good intercept marks, good with ball in hand, and are decent kicks on the rebound.

#9 Maverick Garaicoa, half forward who was good defensively, laid plenty of tackles, took a couple of marks inside 50. Lacks depth on his kick, but puts it in the right spots.

#1 Raphael Geesu, small forward who reminds me of Jesse Motlop. Kicked an Eddie Betts type goal from the right pocket.

One for the future, forward ruck #23 Tom Gillet, 6’7” but light bodied. Just lacked the core strength at this level to hold his ground or stick his marks. Highly rated at QAFL colts level from what I hear.

What can people tell me about U16 All-Australians Caleb Nancarrow and Leonardo Lombard? I know Nancarrow is an indigenous tall forward from Cairns who is boarding at Scotch and Lombard is a short (175cm) ball winning mid of Cuban heritage whose father is a famous former UFC fighter (Hector Lombard) but I don't know much more. Anyone got more info?

Currently in the Suns academy and played for our U16s in the national championships this year. I believe the plan is for him to move to Melbourne at the end of this year but it's not clear whether he'll remain apart of our academy going forward. Could end up being a battle between the Suns and Saints for him.

#13 Leonardo Lombard (Suns Academy)
5/10/2006 | 169cm | Midfielder/Forward

One of just three 2006-born players to take the field, Lombard would have come into the clash with confidence having been crowned the Suns Academy’s Under 16 MVP. Starting up forward, the crafty small worked high up the ground for his possessions and looked to unleash by foot on the way back, before injecting some of his speed into the midfield battle. Though he could have lowered his eyes at times, Lombard looked like one of the more lively Queenslanders out there.

Apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

iu

What a fighter he was. That's some fine genetics to inherit.

South Adelaide speedster Benny Barrett has held on to win the inaugural SANFL U16 Best and Fairest Medal with 24 votes.
A member of the victorious Torrens University SA U16 team, Barrett edged out teammate Phoenix Hargrave and Glenelg’s Charlie McAuliffe on 23.
The creative 16-year-old attracted seven first preferences while landing votes in nine of the 14 matches he played with the Panthers in 2022.
Averaging 21 disposals, six clearances and four tackles this season, Barrett not surprisingly received three votes for his stunning performance in Round 8 where he collected 33 disposals, six marks, six tackles, six clearances, 10 inside 50s and two goals.
Originally from Darwin, Barrett played his junior football with Happy Valley before joining South’s Under-16 team last year.
Sturt’s strongly-built midfielder Ned Atkinson finished in fourth place with 22 votes ahead of North Adelaide pair Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier and Owen Kalic on 17.

Cooper Hodge, while ineligible for Brisbane through father/son, is available through their academy I believe.
I know that's not the point of the post, but still worth a mention.
