I thought Buzza was a better option than Arnold at the start of the season, though concerned about his pace. He certainly continues to improve slowly in terms of mobility. However I now slightly prefer Arnold.

i thought we really needed a player who could at least match in strength the big power forwards. However Payne form makes this less of a priority. Also I am picking up Arnold more on the TV. Buzza always stands out, maybe better quality broadcast quality this year.

i like Buzza playing FB/CHB, now that HSmith is back as a key forward. I think it gives him the best chance to display his ability.

we could lose both in th mid season draft.
I was thinking in terms of defense with our lack of depth in that area.
My versatility comment was him able to play forward.
I am still not convinced on Joyce even though he has been serviceable.
Next year there may be a few other defense players available around the other leagues.

I guess it happens. Joyce looks decent cover to me and i get why we took him. Would be a shame though as Gardiner suddenly looking pretty shaky and Lester no spring chook

I think a well-managed list these days should include a free spot on the list for mid season draft. More and more there are some very handy pick-ups and we usually have no option unless have an injury
Don’t really agree with this.

Unless you’ve got a top 3 pick in the MSD, you’re not usually picking up a top tier late developing 19 year old who missed being drafted the year before in their draft year.

By position, the best performing recent picks have been half back flankers, or rucks. And most of those rucks were 19 year olds who missed being picked in the 2020 draft, and are only just coming in to their own in the VFL at his year.

A team in our position would have a later MSD draft pick, so we’re not picking from the top of a very shallow pool of 19 year olds, and we don’t get first choice of the better mature age prospects either.

It really comes down to a choice of keeping a Mathieson or Cockatoo or Lester on the list, or not keeping them for another year, and hoping a similar quality player is available in MSD and that other teams don’t pick the player suitable for us.

Sydney will have a pick well before us.

So .. option three: he doesn't nominate or tells Sydney he will only sign for six months then go back to Brisbane?

DONT LEAVE US HARRY

In either case we would need to make a firm agreement with him - re option 3.1 does he have an exclusive pathway option to the Lions still or would he need to nominate in any case?

If Harry genuinely has an opportunity at another club he would be silly not to take it.

If say Sydney offer him one year and we offer him 2 starting next year, he may consider holding off.

Sydney will be desperate. They'll offer anything we're willing to do.

We had our opportunity earlier this year for Adams replacement. Harry returned from injury or surgery or something so he wasn't ready and we went with Joyce then - just sliding doors. I also agree if there is a firm opportunity get on a list, he should take it.

Harry might actually play in Sydney this year if he goes there. Even if he waits for 2023 and comes to us, he'll be something like 5th fiddle behind Andrews, Payne, Gardiner, Joyce. I think he will benefit greatly from Sydney exposure, they might play him straight after drafting him.

The club would certainly need to give some sort of guarantee.

At 23yrs and a former suns academy player has been overlooked by all AFL teams for more than a few years. If Sydney offer a contract and knowing they are currently short of both KP defenders and forwards I'd jump at it and let form be the guide of any future offers.
Surely if the AFL door opens any opportunistic individual would jump at the chance.

MSD prospects (who haven’t been on an AFL list before) can nominate either a 6 month contract or 18 month contract, when they lodge their application for the MSD.

The club would certainly need to give some sort of guarantee.
Arnold does an ACL in the second half of the season, do you believe a club would/should honour a guarantee?

No club should be offering players guarantees. Whether that player is currently listed or is a potential draftee.

When a player signs a contract, that is his guarantee from the club.

I don’t know if Sydney is the club interested in Arnold. I’m sure they’ll have at least 2 picks at the MSD, and they need KPP’s at both ends of the ground,

We made our choice a few months back.
I remember last year discussions here on this board about elevating Arnold and Railey. Our list managers did not elevate or select in the various drafts either player.
Six months later an opportunity was opened and we chose to go with Joyce.
Too late she cried now. Good luck to Arnold if he goes to Sydney. I believe he will be a good AFL player, certainly a better one than Joyce.
It will be disappointing to watch him develop in another team.

Disappointing for some maybe, I was disappointed to to see Sam Skinner delisted by us but also happy he was selected by Port.
Will be a few watching his progress I'm sure.

Like we did allegedly with Dev.

We never guaranteed Dev a spot in the best 22. Absolute fake news. Dev wanted to stay as he is around our best 22 and has a chance to play deep in September.

Sydney very keen on Oscar McDonald from Williamstown as well. He has played AFL so may be the safer option for them.

Brisbane had a chance to take either Arnold or Buzza in preseason but chose to go outside their own VFL top ups to chase a delisted player from another club.

They probably deserve to lose both due to not giving their own a chance when they were under their nose.

Yeah I guess it is easy to say in hindsight, but I'm amazed they thought Arnold was not worth picking up over Joyce. The thing that seems to make sense in that regard is Joyce is physically stronger and matches up on bigger forwards better in a time where we've just lost Adams and Gardiner is far away from playing. Payne hadn't shown consistency yet either.

Now we've seen how good Payne has become, Gardiner will eventually be back and Joyce was overtaken by Lester, it's clear as day Arnold was the better choice. I don't envy recruiters lol.

Harry was coming back from ACL too right, and we had Adams go down long term. Not a very re-assuring option to take in terms of replacing one injured player with a recovering one.

Is there a way that the Lions could say to him that we are taking him at end of year and he wont be in the mid season draft or does he autmatically go in and has to go to a club that drfats him?
Harry Arnold just doesn't nominate for the mid season draft, I can't see it being compulsory.

No idea what happens at the end of the season as to whether we have first dibs on him or not.
