I think we panicked a little and went for someone with a bit of size.We also didn’t know Paine would improve every week when the season started.Joyce could still come in handy if something goes awry

Best of luck to Harry but this definitely feels like a case of one that got away considering we had the chance to put him straight onto the list a few months ago. Still think our recruiters made the logical decision at the time so can't begrudge them. We had lost a prime key defender, Gardiner was injured (again), Lester was also coming off an injury interrupted pre-season and Payne had not yet emerged as the defender he has become. Made sense to go for the player with more size and AFL experience.

Tbh I suspect the clubs recent article was a means of supporting Harry getting picked up. It's great for Queensland footy.
I also think we're happy with Joyce as depth so we'll extend him. It means Harry wouldn't have got a chance to play for us even if we picked him. He'll be like 5 down behind both Gardiner and Joyce. Considering our list profile it makes sense for us to draft KPP and give them time to develop like we did with Payne.

Andrews, Joyce - 26
Gardiner - 27
Payne - 23
I'd rather add 18 yo KPP to that group instead of Harry Arnold who is 23 as well.

So to summarise, it wasn't panicking, it was playing the percentages. Picking up a guy who had played senior footy to cover off on injury instead of a rookie who despite looking promising at VFL level is still unproven.

Darragh Joyce could by some be classed as unproven at AFL level after 13 games in 5 seasons at the Saints.

Like you though I'm happy to back the recruitment staff in, Joyce could come in handy if heaven forbid Payne or Andrews get injured.

The point is, he had been seen at the level and the list managers knew what he'd put on the park and what they'd have to work with. I won't pretend to remember his play in any games I saw, but then again I don't usually rush to watch St Kilda games. Arnold may look promising but there's been plenty of players who looked good at the level below. From a risk management position, it was most likely the right call.

I'll be spewing if we lose Harry after deciding to go with Joyce who isnt half the player Harry is - one of the rare times our list team could have made the wrong decision but selfishly fingers crossed Harry doesnt get selected.
FWIW even if he's selected we won't have "lost" him. We never had him, having players on your VFL team doesn't give you any kind of priority over anyone else.

Sure, maybe he was a better pick over Joyce but that's an incredible example of 20/20 hindsight - when you've only got two KPDs left on your list would you rather take a serviceable KPD with a little bit of AFL experience or someone coming off an ACL with no AFL experience and indeed been considered not good enough to draft on to an AFL list several times already? Given the circumstances you'd absolutely take the safer option.

The most interesting issue for our club selection wise is that if both Rich and Gardiner are fit after the bye where do we fit them in the team ?

The current defence line up seem to have cemented their spots. Even Answerth who was a favourite son had to be tried as a midfielder to get a game.

Gardiner no, Rich yep.

Wilmot back to wing, Rich in defense and Sharp will go back to reserves. Same as the earlier games this season.

I wouldn't have either in the team after the bye, our backline has a lot better mix/balance now without Richy.... Gardiner if fully fit and in form could put some pressure on Lester for his spot but Lester is in career best form and would have to drop off considerably to be omitted IMO.

The backline hasn't been out under a lot of pressure recently. Not sure we can expect this to continue when we start playing top 8 teams again
I was thinking along the same lines . If Gardiner is fit and well they'll put him in somewhere for his defensive pressure.

Rich is a strong body and penetrating kick if nothing else.

It's going to be interesting to see how they rejig things when we come up against contending teams.

So did we put Adams in the LTI to get Joyce? I feel like I must have missed this happening when we picked up Joyce because no one has mentioned it haha.
No
Adams was put on the inactive list which enabled us to get Joyce.
LTI is different. That is usually used to elevate a Cat B rookie, so they are then eligible to play AFL seniors.

Looking at the roster watch thread Joyce is OOC this year so must only be on a 6-month contract.
I suspect the Club will look at his form at season's end and decide if better options are worth the risk.
I don't foresee any demand for Joyce from other clubs so resigning him not a priority.

Motty is a better backman than wing. Would you prefer him or Rich, after last week's effort.

Yeah I know what you're saying but Fagan isn't dropping Rich and if Rich plays then Wilmot has to play wing.

I recall chatting to someone at our footy club in January / Feb and we were very much debating who we should list Riley Greene of Harry Arnold. Admittedly, whilst different players I;l admit i was hopeing for Greene while he was all in on Arnold - either way we both loved both when watching the reserves last year and were hoping for either - so when Joyce was announced, we discussed our conversation and were both bloody disappointing.

I get people saying Joyce has AFL experience, but 6 games across what 4 or 5 years by an Irishman who has hasnt played the game for very long isnt someone I'm classifying as 'experienced', anyway its all moot, but i dont think experienced reserves watchers would say it s hindsight at all.

Im just fingers crossed that Harry still somehow miraculously falls thru the MSD and we take him end of year - irrespective or anything, I dont think Joyce has shown no where near enough to be retained beyond this year irrespective of whether Arnold is available or not at end of yeat.

I’m not sure what people were expecting from any other KPD picked up so close to the start of the season to show. I get that Arnold looks promising but expecting him to perform better than what Joyce did to start the season is either underrating Joyce or putting a lot of pressure and expectation on a young guy trying to lock down AFL quality players for the first time in a premiership contending team.

Think there is still doubts on Arnold and his one on one defending. Got torn apart by Darcy earlier in year and really Lions haven’t played anyone with decent forwards in recent weeks.

Think he is still a bit of AFL Level after watching him a fair bit in QAFL before he played regular VFL.

No doubt he has elements of his game that have improved but wouldn’t compare him to Hore or McDonald from Williamstown in VFL as they miles ahead of him as a key defenders if an AFL Club is looking.

But Lions May gamble on him at next year’s list adjustments maybe.

Lions VFL players to nominate for the mid season draft.

Tahj Abberley
Harry Arnold
Wylie Buzza
Kyle Dunkley

321 nominated for a draft where maybe 15 players get selected this year.

Seems logical that we picked Joyce knowing our biggest issue was finding a fit and (relatively) experienced defender for the first few rounds given Gardiner’s issues. This is totally logical given Gardiner was not a long term injury, Lester was in the wings and Fullarton around too.

By the by, where do people think Arnold will go? Swans seem set on Baker. Does anyone else need a defender? Is a a standout enough to just get a spot regardless? Wonder if the tigers get him. Love our academy and Tarrant looking just about done.
