I'm hearing that Northern Bullants and Coburg might be dropping out next season, so that will be a watch.
Both stalwarts of the VFA...sad that the AFL 2s have demoted them to the lower leagues. Preston Bullants have had some special Lions playing for them.....Harold Martin, Peter Weightman, Bobby knockem over Ireland, Dicky Telford,, Leigh Carlson and numerous magpie names such as Laurie Hill n Bob Heard.

I didn't watch the game but Fort had much better stats than Grundy.

How did it look?
Impressions only as I was more focused on Lions players. I did wonder how the Dees were using Grundy as he appeared to be playing forward ruck with only some centre square ball ups.

I had been wondering if the Lions would consider making an offer on Grundy if Dees and Pies were both still committed to paying some of his salary. He did some good things but overall his game put me off the idea. Better to stick with Big O and Fort.

so my impression was that Fort did enough when pitted directly against Grundy to whole his own, maybe slightly shaded. Fort strong around the ground against all opponents. Recall Smith against Grundy a few times, beaten but not disgraced. Fullerton had some good contests in the ruck but as far as I can recall against the other Dee ruck.

as I said impressions only, others may have different views.

Not all about being good enough, it’s more how healthy the senior list if you play or not. Plus doesn’t feel like a team when heap of individuals playing for themselves which is what happens when they trying to get back into senior AFL side which is probably fair enough.

But it is clearly second best competition in country now behind AFL.

It will significantly below SANFL standard, not sure what you have been watching?

I feel quite strongly that we need a national reserves comp so that the standalone Vic clubs can play in their own comp. Too many historic clubs dying. The VFL is hopelessly compromised by AFL clubs having a completely different set of priorities to clubs like the Borough, Williamstown, etc. The AFL killed the VFA so it's their responsibility to maintain the Victorian competition.

100% this.

Where were we before this? Reserves. Where will we end up? Reserves.

In the meantime the AFL has destroyed things, not to mention the flow-on effect to local footy (player payments skyrocketing) too, as a result. AFL has a lot to answer for.

Would have loved to have seen where the VFA ended up without AFL involvement. No doubt there would have been some consolidation, but surely not to the same extent.

All academic now I guess.

Bet they weren't encouraged to catch the train back to the city!
Hopefully they play a bit better this Saturday night compared to the Frankston night game.

Two questions re this weeks Qualifying Final:

1. Why is the Lions website not acknowledging the game ....... "Next Games" listed are Sundays AFLW game, the following weeks AFLW game, Saturday weeks AFL Qual. Final, and then the next AFLW match. (P*ss poor, if you ask me)

2. What might be the composition of our side ...... (potentially more than the usual no. of emergencies may be held out with a view to the following weeks AFL Final) ...... GC will not have that issue ...... more likely they will stronger than normal if there any players eligible to drop back from their recent AFL team.

The flipside is that with their senior team eliminated, there will be an eligibility requirement for Suns players to have played a minimum of... 3? 6? games in the VFL during the season to be able to play a VFL final, which might restrict their available players a bit. Should still be strong favourites though.

Because long-standing fifth-floor ideology is 'the seconds don't matter'.

Last year's eligibilty rules were: minimum 6 VFL games, but no more than 12 AFL games. Unaware if that's changed. (Of course, it's open slather if the seniors are playing the same weekend).

Suspect any players under consideration for the firsts (Prior etc) may have their minutes managed.

Yeah interesting one for any players on the fringe.

I think Lyons needs to be match fit but if he gets injured on the weekend then neale pings a hammy then what a disaster

maybe the best 26 stay out of it and just do a solid training session on the saturday?

Getting ahead of myself but i am trying to remember where i heard it - that if we win next weekend we will not be taking a slab of time off. full training sessions, hit out on the weekend off etc. A lesson from the Geelong prelim in 2020. This weekend will be different as AFLPA has a mandated break for all clubs so at least we are in the same boat as everyone else and no excuse for looking flat

Reckon you heard this, or words to that effect, in Fages' presser after the St Kilda game.

I think last year they used a 28 man squad for seniors so they pulled 5 players from VFL side leading into their final with Southport from memory.

Would not be surprised if they do similar thing, although it is a 7 day break before seniors game , but if they resting seniors then might rest entire 28 man squad.
