Might separate the Attendance and Ratings threads this year.

The AFL is set to capitalise on the NRL’s foray into the US with sellout crowds expected at multiple games in Sydney and Queensland for the AFL’s opening round.

Some 115,000 fans are anticipated to pour through the turnstiles in the AFL’s non-traditional markets for the start of the premiership season, in an vindication of the competition’s controversial call to launch 2024 exclusively in the northern states.

A crowd of 40,000 is anticipated by the SCG for the season-opener between the Swans and fellow premiership contender Melbourne on the night of March 7, a Thursday.

The only time the Swans have hosted a crowd exceeding 40,000 against the Demons came in the final round last year when 41,753 flocked to the SCG to farewell the great Lance Franklin, well clear of the next best of 33,127 on the eve of ANZAC Day in 2004 at the then Telstra Stadium.

The Brisbane Lions are hopeful of packing out the Gabba for their blockbuster Friday night clash against Carlton, the team they defeated to make last year’s grand final. The Lions recently passed 37,000 members for the fourth season in a row, and released 2000 tickets in early December which were sold within 48 hours. Another limited supply of tickets go on sale on Wednesday.

Also if we can keep the usual tigers/pies early season crap out of here that would be great

The crowd at Moorabbin today reminds me of the Moorabbin VFA club that played at the Linton Street ground up to 1963 the year of their last premiership.St Kilda started playing there in 1965.

The current remolded/downsized ground is similar in size to those days and Moorabbin would get similar crowds to the one there today 5000 and for bigger matches against the likes of Sandringham, Oakleigh, Williamstown and Port Melbourne would have crowds of up to 10,000 attend.

This again highlights the vexed question of what 'sellout' appears to to denote when it comes to AFL games.
They may have exhausted their ticketing allocation but 40k at the scg by no means is every seat at the ground filled.

I took the article to mean the GWS, GC and bris games will sell out and they are expecting the swans game to get 40k but not sellout

So far as I can see online for Opening Round:

  • Syd/Melb is basically sold out with only single seats left
  • GWS/Coll has maybe a hundred seats available
  • Bris/Carl has a couple of rows in a couple of bays available (prob new release tickets) and single seats
  • GC/Rich has a decent number of seats unsold - there's 6 bays in the top deck behind the goals with nearly half unsold, and the last 6-8 rows of the top deck towards the wing are also available.

The GC game would need a late surge to sell out but the other three will all essentially get there.

Ticketek isn't showing detailed maps for MCG games at the moment but as far as I can tell:

Carl/Rich - pretty much only the top deck of the Ponsford left for the public. AFL members only has available the back third of the top deck for half the bays. Likely to be high 80s.

Coll/Syd - no bays highlighted as available but seats are offered in the back of top deck only. AFL members is similar to Carl/Rich but with about 3 more bays with back seats available. Looks like at least low to mid 80s.

ANZAC Day is sold out for the public, as is Good Friday.

Bombers Vs Hawks will draw around 65-70K. Hard to know at this stage progress sales as detailed maps missing as you say.

what are the prices for those remaining seats at Gold Coast?

The unknown here is the AFL members - there's hardly anything sold outside of Level 2 & 2A but presumably there will be a significant number of walk ups on the day. Otherwise this game looks pretty good as well.

It should be a terrific start to the season.

True, the MCC will be crowded. Weather permitting, it could nudge 70K.

Round 1 got close to the round 1 attendance record last year. I think it will be given a fair crack again. 4 games at the g. Only killer is GWS and Gold Coast hosting home games

Checkout the new ticketek ‘detailed maps’ tool, now set up. It’s different, similar to ticket masters one in a way.

Yes, much more helpful now. They must only activate the detailed maps after the initial burst of selling tickets.

Both Carl/Rich and Coll/Syd have a few more seats available than how it appeared before but both will still be on track for huge crowds.

The website for giants stadium is is bit weird in how certain areas are released at a time, at one point there were only pockets of seats on the upper stands now their is availability scattered all over

More seats released for both GWS (a few hundred) & GC (3k+).

There are a few hundred mainly single seats @ Gabba. Priced at $100 - $170. Weird.

Re GWS, probably offering unsold / unsigned member reserved seating etc. Essendon do it about 6 days out from its home games, they release all the prior year lapsed reserved member seats to public sale. I’d say most clubs matches are sold with this additional layer. That’s why for ANZAC Day, they have that final seating release the Friday. It would also cover unsold corporate packages etc.
