The September Consensus Draft rankings from AFL, ESPN and RMC



The AFL (Cal Twomey) and RMC had the same 30 players while ESPN (Jasper Chellappah) had 27 of the same 30 players. I have added a nominal draft ranking of 35 for the 3 players that weren't in ESPN's top 30.

FYI The 3 extra players from the ESPN rankings were

Pretty well known that QBE sponsors Sydney’s academy to the tune of $1m per year, and has done so for a decade plus now.

Lions academy is sponsored by Ausenco & CTM. No idea of the dollar figure as I haven’t seen this made public.

Fair chance the Suns & Giants academies have sponsors these days as well.

effectively 14 teams will only have access to 50% of the population. The academy system should be limited to only players outside of the first round. The afl run and fund them anyway so they should be avaliable to everyone

Look, honestly I get it. AFL wasn’t my first spectator sport. I grew up following the NBA, and only started following AFL in my 40’s.

There was lots of stuff that seemed “wrong” about how the AFL is run.

Sure the Northern academies are “rorts” in a national competition.

The draft is seriously compromised.

But so is the actual competition, because 60% percent of the competition is in one state and 55% of the teams are in one city.

There should be no academies, father sons, or free agency compensation.

But at the same time there shouldn’t be 10 teams in Victoria. This leads to multiple inequalities that negatively impact the non Victorian teams and competition as a whole.

The draw being the biggest inequality, that favours the Victorian teams.

Honestly it should be a 14 team competition with 6 teams removed from Melbourne.

One sent to Tassie. One sent to Ballarat or Aubrey. And four ****ed off completely.

My take on the Northern Academies that nobody asked for:

They're clearly working as intended and have been a massive boon for the growth of the game in QLD in particular.

As I recall it, the AFL used to run the talent pathways in NSW and QLD, and did a particularly terrible job of it. They eventually recognized their failings and handed it over to the clubs. Those clubs have a strong incentive to invest time, attention and money into building/nuturing those pathways and have done so to the point where AFL is becoming one of the most played sporting codes at a junior level in those regions. This in turn will indoctrinate generations of kids (and their parents to a lesser extent) into the cult of AFL fandom. If things continue on the current trajectory, AFL could be the most supported code in QLD 20 years from now.

So while Victorians can complain (in some cases validly) about the compromised draft, from an AFL perspective they will be seeing the northern academies as an overwhelming success story. We're going to have to come up with solutions to this imbalance that don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

Just adding to this, there has been a lack of talent being generated for a number of years. (Partially linked to having too many teams, this is only going to get worse when Tassie arrives)
The AFL as stated was terrible at running the talent programs and the players needed to also have a visible pathway to a local team. There are a number of academy players that will overflow into other teams.

The only real issue is the cost associated with regards to draft capital. They need a discount for the effort and resources, just unsure about how much of a discount.

They don't all play in two stadiums. Off the top of my head I can think of at least six NRL stadiums in Sydney.

Keep father/son for the tradition and romance of it, but I would be for getting rid of all the club run/based academies... the AFL run and fund them and the players go into the open draft pool.

Not until we get Sam Marshall, Ryan Gilder, Ty Gallop, Daniel Annable and Raphael Geesu though.
