Good talent is always a priority though. Even if a player is more of a cherry on top rather than a piece of the actual cake, I think teams would rather have a good cherry than a mediocre piece of cake..
He had foot bone issues, then an ACL, then follow up knee surgery on the ACL knee. All in one year.

For a player that relies on agility I can totally understand why clubs are wary.

They did it once, with Ebert and Dangerfield. Dangerfield was amazing there, but indeed did leave later. Whether that plays a role, not sure
Adelaide also defy convention a bit and go for the player they rate, even if others don't rate them as highly (e.g. the Doedee pick). They do get it right more than they get it wrong

For reference, I originally had Sid Draper at Adelaide's selection at pick 5 for the whole year until very recently.

It probably just depends on what the final draft order will be and which club has selections however the Crows wanting to trade up to pick 2 just to grab Jagga Smith is a very weird strategy IMO unless they rate him very highly over Draper.
Honestly, I think the Crows are looking to get up to pick 2 to take Draper, so Carlton can't. I just can't see the Crows not taking him if he's there.

Would be my thinking too if that happened as Draper is just too good to be passed on by the Crows if they have pick 2.

If the order stays the same though, it would depend on what North Melbourne choose and it could one of two ways:

A) If North choose Taura or Smith, Carlton would pick up O'Sullivan and Adelaide would have Draper.

B) If North choose O'Sullivan though, Carlton would pick up Draper and Adelaide would have Smith.

Granted these options would only happen if Richmond select Lalor as well (looks most likely now IMO).

It's going to be one very exciting draft though and looking forward to it on Wednesday and Thursday.

So this was the OP I was replying to, and conversation I was involved in, so the relevance of your post is???

Are you saying the same about the Camporeale twins developing in SA and going to a Vic club?

Many of these kids join at the ages of 11 and 13.

The academy teams are no different to any of the CTL teams, drawing their kids from the local clubs, and congregating talent into supposed high performance teams.

Sydney and GC have ~380 odd boys each across their age groups. Brisbane has about ~250 boys across it's age groups. No idea about GWS's numbers.

I don't believe the strike rate is anywhere near as high as what you imagine. Otherwise each academy team would be producing similar numbers of draftees of the same quality as say the Eastern Rangers or GWV Rebels each year, and that's simply not happening.
It's not the numbers it's the high end talent that is developed basically in the Victorian pathways that no other teams have access to.

Now while that's significant, I'd like to note that Joel Embiid had multiple foot and knee issues in his first three seasons in the NBA, and still went on to become a dominant player.

And Brayden George did another ACL after entering the AFL system.

There's a fair bit of study that indicates something approaching a 65% higher incidence in ACL injuries among players that have already done one at AFL level.

Some clubs just won't take the risk. I'd expect teams with multiple picks (Richmond, GWS) may be more likely to pull the trigger.

All scenarios work well for the crows ... Crows will be getting either Draper Smith or Lalor... Can't really go wrong imho. All very good prospects.

The only scenario that doesn't work out so well it's if North don't pick their guy or trades their pick and then all 3 are gone.

Wonder if the Saints would entertain Eagles F1 for pick 8?

Lets assume the Eagles want Bo Allan and another first round pick this season.

Saints have already fortified their midfield depth and then go again at pick 7.

Saints then get a high pick next season (1-4) and get an elite tall.

Not even for a nanosecond

We're desperate to use our own F1 to get back into this year, which shows you how much we want to be in this draft. No way we'd ever consider trading pick 8 for a future pick alone - maybe a future pick with a slide, but never pick 8 for just a future selection.

Honestly given how desperate we are for top end talent we would probably reject any F1 offer we got for pick 8 with the exception of Richmond's F1 (which they would never offer anyway)

With Melbourne having two top 10 pick leave home to go back to WA I dont think they pick Bo Allen there.
Not a factor at all with our recent drafting. Rivers, Pickett, Tholstrup, McVee, van Rooyen and Jackson were all from WA. Only Jackson that went home (so far at least).

You pick BPA, regardless of where they're from.

Why when Draper most likely available at pick 4? Surely would be for one of the top 2?

Roos already rejected 2x future 3rds for us to slide up... so unlikely as we are already missing our future 2nd.

Imo Carlton more likely to take Smith over Draper, but honestly would be happy for Adelaide to take either at pick 4.

They might take FOS if they know LDU will go.
Would still be a mistake to choose another midfielder unless they can trade back into the first round again.

It's not ideal but surely North Melbourne should consider the possibility of trading their Pick 2 into multiple first rounders and try to select a KPP stock with that second selection at the very least to combat their lack of development in the D/F50s.

Can be possible that Richmond is interested with O'Sullivan or Smith with Pick 2 alongside Lalor and that could be traded for Pick 10 and 18 (or even 21) perhaps back to North Melbourne so they can trade in some decent players that fills more their needs such as Armstrong, Trainor, Shanahan, Travaglia, Berry, M/J Whitlock or Allen, just to name a few.

Will be interesting to see what happens now that O'Sullivan could be selected by the Kangaroos especially if they don't trade Pick 2 on draft night.

If Smith was selected by Carlton though at Pick 3/4, definitely see Draper being picked up by Adelaide then over Langford.

Yeah, think the most likely scenario is
1 Lalor - Tigers
2 FOS - Roos
Ashcroft - Lions match bid
3 Smith - Blues
4 Draper - Crows

Probably looks like it now but if I was a North supporter, I would be praying that the club can find a way to get back into the first round this year to improve their KPP stocks otherwise it's going to be another long 12 months.

Will need to change my phantom draft before Thursday night then as I had originally Taura (Pick 2) to North Melbourne, Draper (Pick 4) to Carlton, Smith (Pick 5) to Adelaide but looks like Jagga has had interest from Carlton now and will be a Neale 2.0 for them in their midfield mix.

Going to be interesting to see if Melbourne now select Taura now or Langford still with Pick 6 though with Richmond a serious chance for Taura if still available while they more likely select Smilie over Langford if the vice versa occurs IMO.

Would think the Dees would take Langford, but I haven't been following so much after our pick as our draft is effectively over with Welsh & Keane upgrade.

Agree, will be interesting to see if Roos trade back in to land Tauru.
