In case people haven’t seen, each of our three main draftees has at least 3-4 YouTube videos of 4-6 minutes each featuring vision from different Coats Talent League games. The beauty of this is that these clips show basically all possessions and involvements (eg marking attempts, tackles, hit outs) from those matches, even missed shots on goal, I.e. not just highlights. Having watched all of these available, I’m even more pleased with our picks but most impressed by Moraes.

Whitlock has a lot of shots on goal and I’m not surprised that his conversion is as low as the quoted 36%. He misses a lot of set shots from 45m out or further. Much better from closer in but in the vision I’ve seen many of his goals come from free-play, eg snaps. Whitlock gets a lot of possession upfield and is pretty proficient below his knees. From what I could tell he must have spent a fair bit of time in the ruck this year. He looks like a competitor to me, and someone who has different components to his game to have a high ceiling both as a forward and second ruck.

The videos I’m speaking about have been uploaded by “Footy Stuff” who has done an incredible job. The same user posted a very thoughtful and detailed pre-draft analysis of rankings of the first round and by position. Would strongly recommend as the discussion is another level of sophisticated insight. Their first round rankings are broken into tiers and go down to pick 18.
Draper was their number 1. Murphy Reid was rated highly, as was Hannaford. Trainor was the highest ranked tall with Lalor, Tauru, Travaglia and Langford all rated lower than on other lists.

None of our guys were ranked top 18. Although in the positional rankings for outside the top 18 players, Berry was #1 of remaining small forwards; Whitlock #3 of remaining tall forwards after Armstrong and Shanahan but before Faul; Moraes #1 of remaining mids ahead of Gross, Ough and Ben Camporeale. Matt Whitlock’s athleticism was described as being higher than Jack’s.

noobermensch does an incredible job with these videos and can't thank him enough

I'm not sure which thread to put this in, or whether someone has posted this already, but it looks like Port has invited Josh Lai to train with us for one of its Supplemental Selection Period spots:
The speedster is in the race.
Line-breaking suburban footballer Josh Lai is in the mix to land on an AFL list, set to train with Port Adelaide for one of its Supplemental Selection Period spots.

Lai, from Cheltenham in Melbourne’s Southern league, will train with the Power over the pre-season after having a medical at the club on Friday.

The 19-year-old will be one of the stories of the off-season if he is to be swept up by the Power, having never played any VFL or Coates Talent League matches.

Lai sat out most of 2023 with a foot injury and has played just 12 games of senior football.

It sounds like Port did very well getting Berry and Jack Whitlock. Port had berry rated before Reid and Whitlock. There was a lot of interest in Berry in the picks just before Port's selection. If Berry and Reid were off the board then port would have slid back and picked up whitlock and others.

Interesting that Port were only going to use three picks...pick 50 became 46...which ended up being tom gross (alex dodson went at 53) Strange to be so committed to Tom Cochrane!

the Power gave up a pick they weren't going to use to ensure nobody else could pounce.

- Joe Berry has a tough initiation at AFL level but I thought he has been solid in the last month or so without starring. Kinda difficult to play well with the current forward setup.

- Christian Moraes has shown his running capabilities. Needs to put on some size and fix his ball drop asap. Will be a good wingman if he fixes that.

- Jack Whitlock showed some good signs with his marking at the highest point being his point of difference. Also nice to see that he has an opposite leg considering how many kids these days don't bother learning to kick on their opposite kick and elect to do a banana or checkside. Put on some muscle during the off-season and he could very well become a mainstay in the 22.

- Tom Cochrane was arguably the surprise packet out of the bunch. Already showed his toughness and desire for the ball in a pre-season match and backed it up with kicking goals for fun in the SANFL. A shame his season ended with a foot injury. Potentially a rookie steal.

- Benny Barrett is a tough one to gauge because he has serious pace but it remains to be seen whether he is good enough to play at AFL level. Doesn't have the cleanliness and composure with his ball use.

When you add Lai and Ramm to this intake as under 20 yo first year recruits, it’s a very promising haul that goes some way to atoning for the meagre returns of the two previous, JHF-compromised drafts (McCallum, Marshall, Scully, Anastasopoulos, Charleson, Lorenz). MacKinkay and Liddy are further bonuses, while Moss remains an intriguing watch for the next year.

Personally, I’m relieved that Berry was able to come back into the side and at least hold his own in contests and tackling. Getting that right is the first step to building an AFL career.

Moraes strikes me as a strong team mate. His gut running ability - along with that of Liddy, Richards and MacKinkay - is something we’ve lacked for a while. Clearly he needs to address his kicking, and specifically ball drop. If he does, he’ll go from serviceable to a serious contributor.

Cochrane is the forgotten man. He looked so dangerous at SANFL level and capable at AFL level early on. Can’t wait to see if he can lock down a small forward role in 2026.

Whitlock and Ramm - enough’s been said already. Along with Lai, these are the guys who have given us most positivity and hope in the back half of an otherwise dreadful season.

Barrett - I guess he gets another year as a rookie B. I just didn’t see enough to suggest he’ll make it in a successful AFL team.
