I have also predicted Hamling in.

Highlighted green players are under pressure imo. Let us see how they perform in 2024. Bringing in Snell leads me to think we are not satisfied with our existing KPD. I like the look of Edwards. Snell with some pace looks a handy addition. Francis is a steady we know what he can do, reliable player.

Pretty disappointing analysis. Lacks any depth of understanding of our list beyond seniors. And even then ignores McLean as a factor. Mitchell as a defender, doesn't know we have Edwards as a tall KPD. Konstanty "didn't set the world on fire". Meh!
I thought it was pretty good for someone who is trying to cover teams across the league.

Love the chart - so packed with information.

I don't agree that Vickery is under more pressure than Edwards or Francis. True, Vickery is approaching the end of his first contract, probably the most common time to get cut. And he hasn't come close to playing seniors. Nevertheless I am bullish about him. (Like others were about Rankin - and we saw how that panned out!) I still don't think he is under as much pressure because:

(a) he has had less chance to prove himself (been injured during his first season); and

(b) we have less depth in his position of small defender. Magor I personally don't see as a lockdown defender. Probably Kirk is now Vickery's biggest rival for the lockdown role. Whereas we currently have a glut of fair-to-middling KPDs (after having been short of them) and we are every chance to bring in more after deciding which of those we currently have we want to persevere with.

Also, outside of our latest draftees, Cooper is our youngest player - still only 18.

Conversely, while I'm more bullish than most about Vickery (admittedly based on not much), I'm less bullish than most about Edwards. I can see Edwards potential but am yet to be convinced he will convert it. He hasn't produced that much so far. If he can realise his potential though he can be a weapon with his speed and power. He could be used to lockdown on the monster Tom Hawkins types - I see that as his most likely role. I haven't seen great evidence of him reading and using the ball that exceptionally. Possibly he could even be converted into a marking KPF - but he's a long way behind Dossa and a fair way behind even Buller if we considered him in that vein. Might be trialled in the reserves though given we have so many tall defenders. I'd be interested in a forward line including the talls Buller, Ladhams and Edwards. Let Arnold, Snell, Francis and Melican/Hamling play back, as well as Fox/Cunningham.

ASIDE: I feel so excited thinking about our reserves this year! [Prayers to footy gods for a fair run with injuries. 🙏🙏🙏]

Thanks Rusty, great stuff as usual.
I've posted before that with 4 KPDs OOC at the end of the season there will be pressure on all of them. Melican, Arnold, Francis and Edwards. I doubt we keep more than two given we still have McCartin, Hamling and Snell. Performance will decide who stays and who goes (I hope!).

I see your point about Edwards, and he has played there with the Academy, BUT, as I've posted before, we are going to be very tall in the VFL side so shuffling the deckchairs would be very difficult. My possible VFL side:
Vickery Melican Arnold
Edwards Francis Fox
Warner Roberts Campbell
Magor Ladhams Reid
Konstanty Buller Kirk
McAndrew Jordon Mitchell
Snell Cleary Green VFL VFL
Every reason to be excited.

That is a ridiculously tall team - I had underestimated just how tall we are going to be. We are going to struggle when the ball hits the deck. Can't believe you dropped Campbell to the ressies! I guess that's how you squeezed Sheldrick into the seniors. I like how you've stuck with Wicks and Cunningham in seniors but I just can't see Campbell being dropped to the ressies and i wouldn't like to see it (I don't think it would be good for his development or confidence unless he's right out of form) - better to drop Cunningham or make Sheldrick to wait a little longer.

It's going to be awfully difficult for the Match Committee.
I selected a seniors side first that I thought was balanced then shuffled this VFL team. I noted then that we would need to delist a couple of the KPDs and draft some sharp smalls/mediums to rebalance the list. As long as our VFL listed players contain enough of that type we should be OK in the VFL team. We may need to play "managed" minutes for some of the talls which could actually be a good thing.
The competition between Gulden, McInerney, Jordon and Campbell for essentially two spots will be fierce. IMO only Gulden is guaranteed a spot. McInerney or Campbell could go forward or back but to replace who? Jordon could go forward but same problem.
Playing Melbourne I would want Cunningham on Kozi. Florent or Campbell would get eaten alive. Fox the only other who might be able to hold him. No value in being too tall.
I really hope Sheldrick puts in a huge preseason and makes it impossible not to pick him. Not as a pocket but rotating through the mids so we don't wear out the older guys first round.
Who will volunteer for the Match Committee?

Another comment on my VFL team. Mitchell was drafted as a utility who could play wing or inside, like Jordon, so I picked him inside. I hope we give him some time there. He's a good size and physical. Horse does like multi-purpose players.
The biggest problem I see is giving Stretch, Pete and Will ruck minutes, hence my hope that they play managed minutes where they get a good run, albeit short. As main seniors backup Pete's match fitness is crucial so he should play full games but IMO play CHF, run around a lot, and ruck cut out. Stretch can play main say almost 3q and Will a bit over a quarter with some time in the pocket perhaps. Something like that.
The KPDs can swap roles between quarters.
Injuries will happen and that's where maybe Edwards could play forward.
The first time I saw him was forward in the seniors preseason vs Brisbane and he took a cracking mark but looked pretty lost.

With all the competition for spots next year and Stephens / Clarke no longer here, is it fair to say there will be no whipping boys next year ?

Mostly I think this Board is reasonable.

Personally I am in the camp of Stephens defenders and still believe he will have a good career. Admittedly the notion of “good career” and “at Norf” is a little far fetched.

That a bloke who had athletic ability and was determined but was utterly void of footy IQ and can’t kick or handball could play 97 games of footy at the highest level is testimony to the will of the human condition.

Oi there ya scamp. I don’t apologise for arguing at the time was JPK was cooked and should not have played on another year. I was right.

But yes it is true I have zero respect for Sam Reid since his epic GF performance.
Such a compliment !! Thank you! Mr GUH -appears to be a living legend of this board.

Hardly! My take on JPK was 100% spot on, though it was as popular as being caught doing a paint job on a Church at Easter

I think we've recruited well for season 2024...mids, ruck, backs.

Mind you, for us medico/physio holds the key for 2024.

Watching closely the develepment of young Patrick Snell from the Brisbane Academy, he has the size.

Pissed at the Lions for snaffling up ZZ, thems the breaks, but then we got Will Green and Caiden Cleary.

In terms of the thread question: expect we'll finish 5th in 2024

F**k, we have great depth now!! There are 9-10 players that can slot in any round and do a good job 👍😍

Zero Hanger have had their go at a best 22 for us, but unlike the rest it's assuming a fully fit squad rather than just for round 1. Cunningham's in the best 22 for mine but I'd agree with them that if Mills is in and playing defence, between he & Rampe it mitigates the need for Cunningham. I think in Mills' absence he plays.

The one flaw I see with their named team is the four wingmen. Looking at that line-up there is only one ground level player across the whole field who could be considered elite in pressure, and he's not a forward. One of those wingmen would have to make way for a forward who can bring elite pressure IMO.

Pretty bloody good looking team for mine.
